I'd like to see a darker tone. I liked P4's less serious story but I want P5 to go for a more serious tone but still have the Persona Series Trademark humor. I meant in not I.
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
Game » consists of 5 releases. Released Jul 10, 2008
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 is a role-playing game developed and published by Atlus for the PlayStation 2. It is chronologically the fifth installment in the Shin Megami Tensei: Persona series. Like its predecessor, its gameplay combines a traditional role-playing game with elements of a social simulation. Its critical and commercial success spawned a sizable media empire, including several spinoff titles.
What type of tone do you want I Persona 5?
I'm with Gakon; I believe many are misconstruing Persona 3's tone. It was not "dark". Sure there were elements of suicide, death, growing up without parents (a lot of that), divorce and a whole bunch of stuff, but there was also stuff like Operation Babe Hunt or hanging out in the MMORPG. There was not one scene in P3 that was as emotional as the stuff that happened in P4 on December 3rd (except I got real angry when a certain party member dies)."While P3 was certainly darker in tone, not many of the events were as profound as those in P4. The December 3rd event is about as sad and ridiculous as it gets; Persona 3 didn't have anything matching that. All of its character deaths were minor people you don't care about. Really, Persona 3's more macabre elements mostly stem from its setting: the Dark Hour, Tartarus, Evokers. The death overtones don't kick into high gear until later in the game, in the last few months.
I dunno, I guess the tone obviously isn't all there is to it. Frankly, I don't care, because the tone of P3 didn't bother me. I feel like some of the character development is misinterpreted as angsty or emo; while I certainly didn't care for it, I didn't find it exaggerated to that point. I mean, shoot; if someone you know dies, that's a big deal. Persona 4 was able to mix some very profound events into its funtime vibe, though. So maybe I'd prefer that. "
I think the thing with P3's characters is that I couldn't seem to relate or appreciate any of them as much as in Persona 4. Akihiko was this dude that girls chase and he doesn't care because he only wants to get stronger because he's living in the past; Mitsuru is this super serious, high class girl... the only party member who the main character could potentially be buddies with was Junpei and he oftentimes rejected the leader because he was extremely jealous and being an ass. Every party member in Persona 4 are friends and they don't mind hanging out with you. In Persona 3, they were more like teammates fighting for the same cause and living in the same place, but they were not all friends.
I want a game with a similar tone to Persona 3.
That game knew how to balance the serious and lighter moments.
"I want a game with a similar tone to Persona 3. That game knew how to balance the serious and lighter moments. "And Persona 4 didn't?
SPOILERS
I would say that when the party members were hanging out in the Junes to find a kotatsu and then after some laughs the main character suddenly gets a call saying that Nanako's in critical condition is a perfect example of how well those moments balance.
"Id be interested in seeing them cover adults in the next story. It would allow them to craft a more mature storyline involving a lot of aspects of life teenagers dont experience. "
Adult protagonists? In a JRPG? MADNESS!
But I do agree with that actually, it would certainly spruce up the tired formula like the Persona franchise is well known for. And if anyone could pull it off it would be them.

Persona2: EP did it well so I don't see why P5 couldn't.
" @Intercryllic said:I kind of disagree with that. The whole thing about Persona is High School kids that gain special powers but are burdened with a huge responsibility. If there would be any significant change to the formula, I think that the game should take place somewhere else than Japan."Id be interested in seeing them cover adults in the next story. i would like it if persona 5 had a similer tone as P4 because i went back and played some of P3 agian and it just felt like it was trying to hard to be dark with the blood on the floor of dungons and people turning into coffins also i like the ruarl setting a lot more than the tokyo big city setting because i dont think we see that very often ( at least i havent ) but i do think it would intresting if you was a collage student instead of a high school student

The only ones I can think of that take place in a city are: Mother/Earthbound, The World Ends With You and Persona 3. I would like to see more of that.
If there would be any significant change to the formula, I think that the game should take place somewhere else than Japan. "I've thought about this too, and I think it would be a great way to switch things up. France? Brazil? South Africa? The US? The mind boggles. Though I fully expect them to stick with what they know.
I would very much like to see them return to a similar tone as in P3. P4 was great and all, but at times it was just too happy to bear. (Pun intended) The battle theme made me want to rip my speakers apart and strap pillows to my ears at times. The rest of the music is awesome, though. Anyway, I'm getting off topic... So yeah, darker, please. P3's mood was awesome. Observe:
As long as it's on the PS3, I don't really care: both P3 and P4 were awesome in their own way, so I'm sure Atlus is capable with any kind of tone, light or dark or anything in between.
NOT HIGH SCHOOL!
I'm done living through high school years again and again.
Reminds me of my uniform wearing middle school and high school years, with annoying HR teachers that order you around.
Once or twice, fine... Reminding me a third time? No effin thanks.

That would be exactly as out of place as a Persona game not taking place with high schoolers.
Exactly. There are still High School elements even though you're controlling an adult." @FluxWaveZ: Persona 2: EP is not about high schoolers. I mean, some are still in there and you still visit a high school, but it has its reasons for doing so. "
Edit: And I have not played P2: EP, but I know that the main character was that sick girl from Persona 1 so there's still a link. I just wouldn't want it being just a random group of adults who are the heroes of the story, there are tons of other games that have that.
