Really appreciate how honest Paul is. He has real self awareness, and is always willing to admit his failings. The world could really use more people like that.

It's a another "Dan criticizes his Dad's views" episode again. Dan talking to him like he doesn't have thousands of weird quirks that people would find insane.

I feel like Dan and his dad are on two perfect sides of this weird "know just enough to get themselves in trouble" coin to make these and absolute delight every time.

OK LEMME BREAK THIS DOWN. 'Ancient Egypt' spans a massive time period. So they built the Pyramids in 2500 BC, thereabout. Cleopatra was alive (and Egypt was ruled by the Ptolemys) and chillin with Caesar over two thousand years later, in about 50 BC. That's when Origins takes place

Of all the topics you guys have tried to punch up over the years, the evolution of language is by far the most complex, lol.

I don't know what this says about me but Paul's life sounds pretty nice.

Also yeah as someone said, ancient Egyptian history is a massive topic that spans thousands of years and multiple different kingdoms.

Same thing with Rome, except it's a bit more recent. Generally accepted to be between 700 BC and 500 AD, though as with everything the lines of where something of the significance of Rome starts and ends are super blurred, especially towards the end of the Roman Empire where lots of different peoples claimed to be the successor to it over the years.

Is Dan really not aware of how many Dragon Ball Z games exist? Definitely a video game thing.

Oh man, okay, I'm going to be This Person (sorry). But if you want a really great read about the formation and foundation of the English language, written by an enormously charming and funny Englishman, read "The Mother Tongue" by Bill Bryson. It's not too scholarly, a very fun and interesting book, and if that's not enough, there's an entire chapter about where English swear words come from.

@steampug: Yep, read that for linguistics in college. Good stuff. My favorite is some of his work on the history of prescriptivism vs descriptivism and what a losing battle it has always been.

Anytime I think for a second that I would want to have an audience for any of my bullshit, I come to this site, which has an overall very good community, and I read a comment that declares someone related to a member of the site, both of which they don't know, is depressed and I realize "Oh right, yeah, it's nice to be pretty much anonymous."

Having said that, I like this just like every other one. Paul is such a good dude.

That's not at all what he said, but ok.

The concept of being alone and being (or feeling) lonely have always beduffled me and personally, I tend to mix the two. When it comes to relationships, just like Paul, I have family and friends that I love to talk to and spend time with but I prefer to do things alone and I feel just fine about that. I do occasionally text my friends whenever I go places and whatnot, but when it comes to dating, I feel the same: I want a lot of space to myself and there are times when I don't want to do everything together with someone. I just like doing things alone and want to have a more independent life.

Thing is that I'm young and had only one semi-relationship. I see a bit of Papa Ryckert in me and I love Dan for sharing this part of his life.
