Come on, let Dragon Ball have its play on word names.
Feel like a negative episode so far halfway in, lot of unnecessary shitting on character design, and like 60% wrestling :I

Goku is 5'9 and Vegeta is 5'5. The power up is after severe physical exertion/damage to the point of near death, and I'm pretty sure canon-wise only really jumps them forward up to the super saiyan state, after that it isn't nearly as potent. And its potency varies depending on what Toriyama wanted to do in the manga. Also this series is terribly written, didn't have any planning, was literally made up week-to-week as it was serialized in a weekly compilation, and abilities/characters would disappear because Toriyama forgot about them, and was aimed at 10-13 year old Japanese boys in the mid 80s.

I still love it. It is so stupid.

Edit: You guys really should've started with OG Dragon Ball, even if there's a lot of problematic shit in there. You've basically jumped into the middle of a series. But that's nothing you haven't been told.

Edit 2: The pun names are the best part of this series. And again, mid 80s aimed at 10 year old Japanese boys.

I love how disappointed they are that they won’t get a tournament, it feels like a bait and switch because original DB had at least 4 tournaments in it.

The funny part about Dan and Jeff asking how Shin doesn't know shit about the universe is that is all explained in Super and one of the best parts of that series. Basically, the supreme deities of that universe (Shin and Beerus) are just really bad at their jobs to the point that they are the worst or second worst universe. It really makes a lot of stuff that happens in the latter half Dragon Ball Z make sense. None of the other universes have to deal with most of the BS that theirs does because their gods do their job and actually know what is going on.

These episodes can certainly be slow in parts, especially Dabra charging up, even if just for a couple of episodes, but I personally like where the saga goes, I think it has a lot more interesting and fun stuff going on at any given moment than the Android / Cell saga despite the massive payoff that got.

I was honestly surprised to find them so disappointed with some of the new villain designs, even though, as Jeff theorised, Pui-Pui and Yakon especially are just fodder before the main villain, and treated as joke opponents for the Saiyans to pulverise, kind of like some of Frieza's goons I guess.

Anyway have some choice sub lines:

(that won't format properly for whatever reason... use open in new tab)

Debura has an amazing voice. It's bassy in a way that most voices aren't. I wonder if that's what the guy sounds like without any vocal effects.

I agree that these henchmen are lame but I feel like they're only a little less lame than Frieza's henchmen. Don't understand the hate for Debura but he doesn't stick around for very long anyway.

This is definitely the biggest difference on how I felt on the episodes vs them. I loved the sayians fucking up these scrubs and blowing Shins mind as well as the tournament side. The demon stuff makes more sense if you know OG as they played a big part in specifically Master Roshis past.

And maybe it's just me because I give no fucks about wrestling, but every tanget in that direction they go in sucks.

@riepu:

As much as I love this series as well as the random discussions across the site about batshit crazy wrestling stuff, I have to admit that this series in particular can get a little bogged down with the references and tangents and my eyes start to glaze over a little when it happens.

Buu saga is my favorite saga easily but after the great start (Great Saiyaman, World Tournament) the series really drops and drags from Babidi's ship until Mr. Satan meets Fat Buu and Buu eventually becomes super Buu where it picks up again. The upcoming Majin Vegeta stuff is great though.

QuiQui and Yakon are definitely weak, and I too was just counting down the time until Babidi dies when rewatching this series recently. No surprise from them not liking these throwaway characters following the disappointment of the tournament dissolution. I think Bibidi Babidi Buu is a great name convention though, and I also like Dabura just fine.

There is a good moment of Goku and Vegeta talking before leaving the tournament in episode 114 that seems to be like Goku talking to the fans via Vegeta as proxy, where Vegeta (the fans) are mad the tournament is ending and all those matchups will be gone, but Goku (almost as if he is Toriyama himself) assuring him there will be plenty of great matchups to come.

Regarding wrestling tangents: they're having fun so I'm usually ok with it even if I don't get all the references, but I'm kind of with others here that I feel they go on a big too long and overall tie it wrestling just a bit too much. I find myself sometimes rolling my eyes and wondering how long it will be before they're back to talking about the show.

How dare you besmirch the name (and character design) of the demon king! No, he really does suck. I think they’ll be pleased with these next couple batches at least still. There’s some cool stuff coming up.

Haven't listened to the episode yet but it seems like from some people on here that they are disappointed that the tournament isn't continuing and like someone said, Dragon Ball has several of them in the series so hopefully they get their fix there if they ever decide to go through that series, which I hope they do since I love the original Dragon Ball more than Z.

Personally I love the wrestling references during the episodes but I like wrestling although I can understand people getting a bit annoyed with it constantly much like I am with other topics they talk about on Bombcasts or the like.

It's not surprising they're not a fan of the throwaway characters, since that's what they are: throwaway characters. I think the point of this section of the arc is that it's essentially a big joke/subversion on typical manga tropes. Instead of the new villains all being more powerful than the last, they've severely underestimated how strong the main characters are despite being built up as monsters themselves. That and it plants a seed of doubt that maybe Buu isn't as big a deal as they're making him out to be.

Dabura also seems like he's intentionally supposed to look stereotypically evil and powerful. That's also probably meant to be a subversion, since he gets completely punked by a fat pink man who you wouldn't expect to be even stronger than him.

The name puns for Babidi and co are a little weird. Not including Spopovich and Yamu (who don't really matter for that long), they're all named after magic words or incantations. Bibbidy-Bobbidy-Boo is obvious, while Dabura is from "Abra KaDABRA". Pui Pui is the most obscure for westerners, since it's based on a Japanese good luck charm "chichin puipui". No idea what Yakon is though.

Accept it, nothing; the podcast where they exposed the ruse would probably skyrocket to my all-time favorite Giant Bomb moment.

The explanation for Supreme Kai not knowing anything about what's happened with the Z Warriors is apparently "Earth is tucked away so far in a back corner of the galaxy nobody in the heavens remembers to check on it except for King Kai, and he doesn't even really do that."

Something you come to understand about Dragonball is that every god has a boss above them and they're all stupider than the last.

I don't know how intentional it is but boy does it make sense.

Dabura has always been hella lame. He doesn´t do crap and then gets his ass very quickly handed to him by Boo.

I recall some people wanted him to be in FighterZ, but I don´t think he qualifies any higher than the rest of Babidi´s goons.

All right, guys! I know you've probably heard this so many times now, but almost everything that you're saying you'd "like to see happen" is literally Dragon Ball, the original series

  • Dan wants more dumb shit, it don't get dumber than man-child idiot Goku actually being a child
  • Tournaments are almost everything the original series focuses on!
  • There's literally a tower at one point that they climb up
  • flying nimbus/Kinto'un is everywhere
  • Swimming across the whole fucking ocean
  • you find out why Piccolo is called ma junior
  • Child Goku actually has challenges to face, and his power level isn't always way the fuck over the enemy's
  • The whole series is a classic martial arts "training" arc (main character learns new techniques from different masters on the way to be the best fighter ever)
  • You might actually cry at one point. I know I did.
  • You find out the true amount of pervert that Master Roshi is
  • you learn why Oolong (pig-man) always gets beaten up at every fucking fighting tournament (spoilers it's because he's a douche)
  • Also you learn where everyone learned to fly
  • Ass-eater Yagerobi is still his exact self
  • and last but most certainly not least, Yamcha is actually a cool guy to be around and isn't a pathetic dumbass... until maybe the last season.

Other than that, I completely agree with you. I really hope they watch it once they finish Kai. I think they would have a lot of fun with it and it would be great to hear their reactions to it. And I also need an excuse to re-watch it all again.
