Excited for this when I watch it later today! It's a good replacement for I Love Mondays. Although I still miss I Love Mondays.

So just throwing this out there for Alex. The huge difference between the launches of Final Fantasy XIV then and now is the previous game was an empty, rushed out, awful think that was pushed out the door a couple years before it was ready. It got the entire team fired, and a new crew was brought on board to fix it.

Now it's launching as a genuinely good game (well, good MMO, YMMV when it comes to that genre) but they appear to have underestimated the interest in it, because they're having massive congestion issues with the servers, something that's also pretty normal for the genre in general.

The generalized comment bugged me a bit, since they actually bothered to launch a good game this time, and it wasn't just another pile of rushed garbage.

Oh, and Shadow of the Eternals didn't even make 330k, much less 400, Alex :P

When you guys first said you were going to be doing this, I thought it was going to be lame as fuck. I only say that because I don't normally like podcasts that are Skyped (or Google...+'d?) The only other one I'll listen to is the Playerone podcast, which you had an epic guest spot on Patrick, loved those stories they told about you :P

But anyway, I wanted to say that I love Bombin' the A.M. As much as a joke as the name is (I like the name), it really does feel like a morning radio show. Alex, please do more morning zoo sound effects.

You guys rock!

@patrickklepek.Patrick, dude, can you just come back to SF. Whilst I don't mind this new video push, you need the rest of the gang to bounce off. I'm not saying you're not entertaining on your own, but you were superb working with, and acting as a contrast to Jeff, Vinny, Brad who sometimes concentrate more on comedy than news/factual exchange. You also worked really well with Drew (Iceland etc).

ps. don't take this as criticism, because it sure isn't.

Much love.

That's what I used to do, but I've never really spared a thought for the middle ground between awful sites and my favorite sites, namely sites that I'll visit occasionally if they show up on Reddit or something. Your conversation made me realize that they, too, deserve a bit of ad money when I use their content, however infrequently.

So now I'm allowing ads by default and only blocking them on sites that are obviously shady. Probably not the smartest move, security-wise, but such is the price of the Internet.

Rather than Patrick coming back to SF, a more realistic solution would be for the SF crew to make a "home" online live show that includes both Alex and Patrick. It should be in a format that is able to not only effectively convey the exchanges between the crew but to also let the audience know the staff in a more "personal" level - since they are at home and can do whatever they want.

Basically, I don't see why Jeff/Patrick are the only people who do Jar times.

I didn't even know ad blocking was a problem. I never use blockers because I don't go to sites where ads are an actual problem. Maybe i'm just old enough to remember how bad it can actually be- and by comparison most modern websites are a light touch with ads. I'm also happy to pay a small membership to get an ad free version of a site.

I don't think the GTA issue has to do with PSN, rather it has to do with the PS3 getting hacked a while ago. Because while Sony did an astounding job putting the cat back in the bag, securing a console people said was now permanently blown open, there are still people out there who kept the old firmware and has been modifying it to work with PSN and newer games. It's these people who have access to the actual program files, and there's really nothing Sony can do about it without breaking compatibility with existing PS3s.

I disagree with the idea that I must sit down, allow ads and be fine with that. We, the ad blocking consumer are applying market pressure by disabling these ads and the industry must respond with consumer satisfying services. Maybe we move to a model of the internet where subscripts, In-service-purchase and trial modes (like the app world) are used to solve the problem.

I get that you guys need money to survive - and largely this site has OK ads (I have a sub so I haven't seen them in ages). But "shut up and like our site with these ads" isn't going to fly in a free-market.

Really enjoying this show, guys.

As for the adblock topic, I don't feel guilty for having it on by default, sorry Alex. I do white-list sites I visit regularly, however, and I think that's the way to go. Without it, the internet as a whole is a fucking chore to browse.

That campaign is something else though... I would never support that.

I have Adblock on by default. If that makes me scum then so be it. I like Giant Bomb and am a gold member - I also actually have AdBlock set to off for GiantBomb, not that it makes any difference. Mostly I hate ads on video content like YouTube pre-rolls which is why I leave it on.

Like both Patrick and Alex said, the ad system is completely broken. The sooner companies find a better way or come up with a completely new system the better. Maybe millions of people using free AdBlock software will start budging companies into a new ad revenue direction. I'm not using this as justification, it's just my opinion on the matter. People say if you don't support Xbox Live then don't pay for it, well if you don't support ads because the system is broken then don't watch them.

@patrickklepek Really glad to hear someone talking about Sony's infrastructure and network stuff. That is such a giant question mark still that Sony has said zero about and has been years behind MS. Live is still the best unified, cross-game infrastructure out there and it took years to get it there. Sony isn't just going to imagine one out of thin air and they only have a little time to address that before launch (pretty sure they won't though). I'm sure it isn't as bad as the WiiU's, but I also didn't think the WiiU's network would be that bad either...

Why should I allow ads to be blasted to my psyche when virtually every single content I read and watch about are products to be bought and sold in the first place? Must I fully give in to the apparatus that where I love and hate things simply because its what I have been told others love and hate? Must I condition myself to be purchasing a wide variety of goods and services when those exact goods and services sustain social control over me; making my life a life of toil and fear?

Nope, not happening. As long as adblock is there I'm never turning it off. If the two of you ever lose this current job hopefully you will be able to find a new profession that will allow you to hold a more nobler and dignified position on ads other than adblock = piracy.

I mostly agree with your position about adblock... I usually have no issue with watching an ad a few times...
BUT it often happens that some websites bombard me with US based ads which don't even apply to me. Even then, whenever I find the ads respectable, I whitelist the website because I find it logical to do so, but in some places, particularly GameTrailers, where not only do they show a ~40 second ad for ANY video, but sometimes it will randomly reload the web just as the video starts, so you are forced to watch the ad twice!

I honestly never had an issue about it until lately too though, it seems that in the last few months the ADs are reaching some crazy invasive levels.

Anyhow, always good to hear you guys out. Have fun at PAX.

My feelings on ad-block; the more we block ads, the more our content and our advertising will cease to be separate entities, and the little guy will simply disappear. This is not a good thing.

The annoyances of pre-roll video ads and banner ads aren't worth destroying large sections of the internet to block.

Great show though, it's nice to have something to look forward to for early Monday morning.

I don't block ads because I am against content creators or I don't like paying for things. I block them because they're aggressive and distracting when trying to read articles. How is online journalism going to be taken as seriously as print if even decent long-form articles are accompanied by large, garish ads? If I like a site enough to go there every day, I most likely pay for it (Giant Bomb, Washington Post, etc.). If I can depend on sites having less obtrusive ads and more subscription models, I'll get rid of it.

P.S. On the flip-side, Adblock should have a little class. The crowd-funding thing is super gross.

The AdBlock crowdfunding is coming on a bit strong, and I agree it is foolhardy to dream of a world without ads. But if ads are how most websites make their money then maybe they should shift their revenue format.

I refuse to allow ads because they promote the hits-based revenue system which has in some part twisted the way we perceive content on the internet and the movement of information upwards. Companies don't have to cater to me, that's their right. But I also have the right to not participate in their vulgarity. I pay for the extra content on Giant Bomb because I believe in the web site. But IGN does not need my patronage to be successful - and if they do then that is a problem with their system, not my viewing habits.

Patrick I like you a lot, but honestly fuck you in this one case for trying to posit a 'correct' way to use AdBlock. A company has got to convince you to patronize it. Profit off viewership should not be a foregone conclusion. In the real world, that is through goods and services. But The Internet is not traditional goods and services and treating it as such is an exercise in futility. The idea that The System Is Broken but You Have to Participate is such an intellectual farce that it doesn't even bear addressing. If the system is broken, you make new systems or choose to participate in different ones -- just like Giant Bomb did. Sites without the ad model are popping up all the time with increasing rapidity and eventually, although definitely not soon, it will become far more difficult to sit on your high, precarious horse.

Obviously there's no winning here, though, because clearly everyone is too right to even consider other sides, myself included. So fuck you too, Alex.

Calling it piracy is a tad disingenuous. Piracy implies unauthorized use of exclusive rights which isn't relevant to parsing ad html. I don't agree to nor see EULAs requiring me to look at ads.

Also, I don't get how that stuff with rock star is sonys fault. The game was available to preload, it doesn't matter how tightly locked that data was, it was physically capable of being loaded onto a hard drive; some ass hole with the know how will find a way to decode it. Maybe rock star shouldn't have allowed for preloading so early
