whenever Jeff is talking fighting game specifics I zone out (for decades now) ... but still appreciate his voice as background noise of whatever else I am doing.

@MrMazz: Fuckup. Bullshit. Whatever you want to call it. I understand the reasoning behind it being the way it is but that doesn't mean I have to like it. The shit is on the disc and clearly most of it is done, but it's locked and not only do we have to wait most of the year to officially use it, we'll most likely have to pay for it. Personally, I think it's a gross business practice when you step back and look at the entire thing but that's just me. I'm not expecting Capcom to bend down and suck my dick, but I think there's a better way to do business than the way they're doing it. But hey, I'm just some dude on a video game forum so clearly my opinion means jack shit and I don't know what I'm talking about.

Compare gem 002(free) and gem 003(dlc).

002 Immense power LVL2 - condition: connect with 10 normal moves

+20% damage output, -10% Movement speed

003 Immense power LVL2 - condition: connect with 10 normal moves

+20% damage output, no penalty.

Same thing with 043 and 044, 118 and 119.

I don't want to be that guy, but how are they so bad at fighting games. Haven't they been playing them for years? They get a timeover because the biggest combo they do is a sweep, you can easily kill a character with 2/3 easy combos in this game... Guess it doesn't matter if they're having fun :P

BTW the DLC thing is bad but at the same time fine, its better they do a 'super' edition later on via DLC than release a new disk. And to answer your inevitable question, of course they HAVE to release a super edition, I think we've just gotta accept that :( At least the roster is pretty big, when the new 12 characters are released you'll be glad it all works and is easy.

Yeah, I just can't bring myself to buy half a janky Street Fighter game... I loathe Tekken and those characters would go completely untouched.

But on the plus side: FARTALITY!

That's why Jeff has won serious Mortal Kombat tournaments before? These guys don't necessarily have the time to refine their skills at specific fighting games nowadays though, and they (especially Jeff) often lament the fact. But whatever, they're way better than I am, and they are just goofing around for a video.

@PerfidiousSinn: Because Namco has software patents on a number of the concepts that would constitute a good fighting tutorial. Yes, software patents are horribly handled right now.

I think Jeff mentioned a patent that Namco has on certain tutorial stuff, but I think he mistook them for SEGA who had the best training mode in a fighting game in Virtua Fighter 4 then proceeded to mess it up in part 5.

If they:

  1. Make expansion content for a game
  2. Include it on the pressed retail disc
  3. Charge you for it separately later on down the line

Then I am getting short changed.

I don't care if 30 is a lot of characters, I should be getting everything that is on the disc that I paid for. If they had enough foresight to get this ready before the game was pressed and shipped to stores, then that is content that is being held for ransom. End of story. The only defense for something like that is, "Well, I have a lot of money or will be getting it for free, so them charging for that doesn't effect me".

But it DOES effect me because I don't have that kind of money and being left out on this kind of shitty decision REALLY sucks, and if you can't understand that, I'm sorry. To me, it's like seeing something that already feels too expensive - and upon reading the fine print, you discover that there's all these extra fees on top of that to get "everything". Sure, the initial purchase is $60, but by the time they're done, they actually want you to have paid upwards of $80-$120.

And at that point, just waiting and buying a $20 pre-owned "Game of the Year Edition" with all the DLC included for free sounds like a mighty good deal.

Playing at a tournament at a press event doesn't count as "serious tournament". Jeff is one of my favorite people on the site, but he is god awful at every fighter Ive seen him play, but it's understandable. He doesn't have the free time to devote into learning the ends and outs of one game.

I can see a reasonable argument in favor of on-disc DLC for competitive multiplayer games. It totally sucks when DLC continually narrows the pool of people you can play with.

However, this is totally retarded. The amount and types of DLC that are on the disc, but not released, for this game is absurd.

@Vash108: It's the most fun I've had with a fighting game in awhile, it's too bad it's surrounded in so much BS. You should still check it out if you're interested, just have gems set for the few guys you'd use in ranked matches. Looks like they won't even be using the gems in tournaments.

Please look at my other post. There is a penalty, the gem doesn't last as long (5 seconds less). And combos do last a long time so you'll probably fit one or two combos. Especially if those combos have a super added to them.

EDIT: Actually some of the defense gems and speed gems don't have the penalty. That's fucked up, but I don't use them anyway.

@BlazeHedgehog: So if they held back already completed material and released it two months later, you'd be okay with that? If so, then it is actually your awareness of the characters that upsets you and that's just unfortunate on many levels. As we all know, a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing.

There's nothing Tekken about game. I have like a thousand customizable clothing items on all my Tekken 6 characters and there was NO DLC! Also, there is no need to balance this game's characters if they are selling power for money.

I was really hoping to get this game but now I won't. I'll buy it used if anything but I'll probably feel sad when I play it. No. I won't buy this game.

Really really really tempted to buy this but the DLC character thing has put me off it. Granted the only characters I want are Dudley and Lei and if I knew that Capcom would charge a fair price (no chance that they will be free) for the characters I'd happily get the game. The DLC gems and costumes don't bother me and I would assume that they will be able to patch the online problem so really it's just the DLC character issue that is putting me off. I know I want this game, I've wanted it since it was announced but I don't agree with what they have done about the DLC being on the disk. This shouldn't affect me as much as it is...

This game is amazing, I grew up playing SF and Tekken in arcades, but it takes a while to get used to, even if you're only familiar with Street Fighter and only play the characters from that side. I won a lot of matches online simply because so many people didn't know how the hell to play the game, and I barely knew, because I did the tutorial.

I have the PS3 version, and they just released Mega-Man and Pac-Man for free, add those to Cole, and Kuro and Toro, Tekken players in 2D environments, gem systems, cross rushes, cross...something...pandora mode, excessive juggling, etc. and this amounts to probably the most insane fighting game I've ever played, moreso than even UMvC3.

I haven't had any problems online other than the audio glitch they were talking about, which does suck because the sound effects are crucial, but it's most fun when you're playing with someone in the same room as you anyway. And yeah, I understand the complaint about how the gem system works, but honestly I haven't noticed gems to make a ton of difference anyway.

This game is sort of a mess, and I think it would be impossible to pull it off any other way...but it's great. Jeff is very specific about fighting games and what he does/doesn't like, he's kind of a connoseuir, and has admitted to not totally loving crossover fighters. I, on the other hand, am a sucker for fighting games and pretty much own them all. I know the flaws and idiosyncracies of each, yet accept them.

And I'm way more suited to Street Fighter than Tekken, but I think the Tekken fighters fit well. Some of them kinda play more like Street Fighter characters (like Hwoarang), while others are a little more complicated. You have to keep in mind this is basically Capcom's versions of these characters, and of course they had to do a lot of tweaking to get them to fit in with their usual cast of 2-D fighting characters. I think they did a great job. I went from hating this idea to being enthralled by the game itself, it's truly a milestone in fighting game history.

I think this is probably the best Quick Look ever just from a production standpoint. I like seeing the guys expressions and how they talk about this stuff.
