Jesus... man, you're really not happy with something are you?
I'm just calling it how it is.  Do you remember when the Wii came out?  Other than (at the time) 1up's Seanbaby, few gave it a fair treatment.  There is not enough hate...

True. At least the reaction to Kinect has been slightly better.

That input lag strikes me as extremely restrictive in terms of what can and can't be done with this thing.

To be honest though, even if they get it working perfectly, I think I'd mainly be interested in it as a headtracking device.  If it works as well (or close enough) as TrackIR does, but without needing to wear any hardware, then that alone has enough potential to justify the asking price.

I wanna hear more about how well that stuff works, preferably from somebody that has used something like TrackIR before so they can compare.

This is spot on.  It's the Kinect (and hopefully Move) feature I want in all my shooters, and I'll even buy a second one if I can hook it up to my PC to use it for headtracking as well.

I'm also with Sessler in that the voice recognition may wind up being the best feature of Kinect.  The MS Voice software they've already deveolped is absurdly powerful (most major telcos use it as their software for example).  If Mass Effect 3 doesn't let me talk to it to choose to renegade interrupt, I'll be disappointed.

I didn't think it would be possible to be less interested in it (as a gameplay solution, the technology is neat otherwise) going into E3 but I was wrong.  However the more I see videos of people looking like jackasses while playing it the more I want to see people looking like jackasses while playing it.  I can't imagine this thing turning out particularly well for Microsoft but it's going to be fantastic for Youtube.

For us, no. Not until the hybrid, hardcore games come out for Kinect.

The casuals are gonna eat it up. Kinect's gonna be huge for the casuals and hardcore wise, Halo: Reach is gonna wipe the floor this holiday. That's why Microsoft ain't scared.

I'm not convinced there are any "hardcore" or "hybrid" titles to be made with Kinect.  Have you even seen or heard of one being suggested?  I was really hoping that Microsoft would show something like that off at E3, just to prove that they aren't all idiots, but they didn't even come close.

I do think Microsoft can probably buy their way into a large casual install base with huge ad buys and retailer promotions, but without quality software of some sort I don't see those people staying with it and if the E3 showing is anything to go by they have a long, long way to go on that front.

But stranger things have happened, like people loving Halo.  So who knows?

I pretty much whatched some of this interview because of how it was conducted. It's a crack up, but on solid ground these guys have a grasp of their true art. Pretty good for Game reviewers,  these may be the best. I know that is thick, but I wouldn't listen to the subjects  otherwise.

So I learned a few things, also.    :)

Self-professed Halo fanboy here... Ignoring that *whistles*

Don Mattrick and Phil Spencer have said that there are hybrids and these Hardcore games in the works. Apparently, Geoff Keighley has played that Star Wars game.

The reason why we have yet to see any is that this E3 was not for us. This E3 was meant for the mainstream press to see, and report. It was for the mainstream at Time Square, he all saw this stuff LIVE and might have spread the work.

Those 5 games in the front were just to satisfy us before they move on to their new target: The casuals. They know they won't lose their current install base which enables them to try and expand. There was no risk involved. They also felt that at this point, the hardcore need not be sold on Kinect yet since they will still hold on to their 360s regardless. Even Peter Molyneux has said that Fable 3 has Kinect support, Ryan confirmed this at E3. That's an example of a hybrid.

Mirosoft isn't stupid too. They are not going to leave the hardcore hanging. But right, now. They have got most of us settled, they feel. You got MGS: Rising, You got Fable. You get Gears. You got a freakin Halo title. To them, the hardcore is settled for now. They needed to get to the casuals. I think they succeeded in that.

Now, in the next few months? That's when they should announce these new hardcore games they keep claiming Kinect has.

The question is not whether they'll try to fit Kinect into "core" games but whether or not they will be able to do this or if there are even gameplay problems for which an EyeToy Plus can be a solution.  They've entirely failed to deliver anything to suggest that it can provide actual gameplay solutions and I've never even heard someone suggest something that would fit that bill.  Though I have heard several idiots talk excitedly about taking their hand off the controller to make a throwing motion to chuck grenades in Halo, and that's not even the worst idea I've heard kicked around.

Ask yourself this, how is a high fidelity EyeToy going to improve or add anything to a game like Fable?  I could give you a dozen useless gimmicks, which is probably the path Molyneux will take since he sure loves him some gimmicks, but not a single real gameplay application.  It seems to me that the folks at Microsoft spent a lot of money developing this technology, which is very neat in a vacuum, and thought that it'd look whiz-bang futuristic or something but they never once stopped to think how it would actually work in gameplay.  It's going to have limited applications in a limited range of software, the same limited range of software that was the domain of Sony's EyeToy line.  Some of it will definitely work better on Kinect but that doesn't mean it will be any good.

I don't think Microsoft have a clue what they're doing and that they've greatly exaggerated how much anyone, even the less discerning casual players, are going to care about this thing.  Jumping around in front of a camera like a jackass can be fun for a few minutes but unless they're prepared to prove that it's fun for many, many hours this thing is going to bomb and bomb hard.

Obviously I could be wrong but right now that doesn't look like something I'm going to have to worry much about.

You see, what you're saying its entirely valid, its entire true but the same could be said about the Wii. The games that are unique to the Wii, like Wii Sports etc, is the extent of games that really cannot be experienced that way without the Wii.

Kinect just upped that with Wii like games that now cannot be experienced any other way. Sort of.

Okay, I am not sure what I was going with that but this is what I have to say: Motion Controls is just a gimmick. You're right, beyond a certain sector of games, you don't want these motion controls or rather, the controls will be gimmicky.

The casual gamers? They are gonna swallow it for one big reason: Its new. That's the novelty that Nintendo used with the Wii. Nintendo's Casual hook was Motion gaming. Microsoft's is controller less gaming.

But yes, until we see something like Child of Eden... more hardcore stuff like that, I would ONLY expect gimmicky stuff for Hardcore Kinect games. I expect Rare to try something in this space with like a Perfect Dark game or something. I could see a real cool fighting game with Kinect. Maybe even a Heavy Rain like game with Kinect. That could be cool. But, right now, beyond casual games and hardcore gimmicks, don't expect much till Kinect sells.

If Kinect sells though, I can bet that developers will start unleashing more crazy ideas on Kinect. The technology is there. Just how it is used.

I think you've taken me entirely wrong.  I don't think motion controls, as a concept, are a gimmick at all.  The Wii has proven, though in far, far too few games, that the appropriate use of motion gestures coupled with a pointer have very legitimate gameplay applications.  I don't think they're nearly as widely applicable as a traditional gamepad but there are still many games in which a setup like that can provide both interesting and unique gameplay experiences, as well as flat out superior ones.

It's funny that you bring up Child of Eden because that game looks awful when he was controlling it by waving his hands around in front of the camera.  With something like Move, the WIi remote (though I think lack of HD would hurt a game like that), or even a standard gamepad it would be pretty awesome but waving my hands around to control such a game is never going to be an interest of mine, even if they work out the issues of precision, which they clearly have not.

As for gimmicks, I don't even think that they're a bad thing necessarily.  There are plenty of "gimmicks" that provide compelling gameplay experiences.  I just don't see anyone from Microsoft even suggesting that they know how or what those applications are going to be beyond the obvious and narrow categories of dance games and exercise "games," which people will likely buy (assuming they can move Kinect in the first place) but aren't likely to use much.  Quality is my concern here, not sales, though I don't think Kinect is going to do all that well post-launch but I'm also not too keen on betting against the power of the Microsoft money machine so I'm not calling it just yet.

I'm really curious what you think these "crazy ideas" are that could be "unleashed" on Kinect.  The technology is there for what?  And that's my point.  There are extremely limited applications for this sort of technology regardless of whether it is using a cheapo $20 webcam like the EyeToy (probably $5 at this point) or some crazy multi-camera setup with a built in motor to rotate itself like Kinect.  Maybe there are ideas out there but we've had camera-based games for a long time and no one has managed to produce anything more than lame "casual" games or half-baked tech demos and at E3 Microsoft barely managed to even do that.

And lastly, there's something that really should be getting more press (I haven't even seen it mentioned during or after E3, but I also haven't looked all that hard) is that Kinect only operates at 30fps.  Unless they've got some serious ass voodoo up their sleeves that's going to cause a noticeable amount lag, especially on games where your input is supposed to be reflected in real-time on the screen.  Combine that with the inherent inaccuracy of hand gestures as an input device for video games (user inaccuracy, to say nothing of Microsoft's tech, which they haven't yet proven either) and the idea of this working well in any sort of meaningful way in a "core" game is downright absurd.
