This is where my money is going this year.

Building separate systems that are allowed to interact with the player and each other is how games approach Emergence today. Emergent behavior is the gold nugget of games like the Elder Scrolls. Remove that and you have the most boring game in the world, but add too much and you lose the ability to craft a coherent narrative.

So why do we want emergent behavior? Because the result is "more than the sum of its parts", it allows the game to surprise us. Pride sure, but also surprise.

Physics got its Grand Unified Theory problem. For game design I'd say the "GUT" is the merger of Emergence with Plot.

Can't really recommend that book though, Holland isn't the best writer.

One to keep my eye on for sure. I think this is one of the first interviews I've seen so far that mentions the PC availability before consoles.

Been pretty much sold on this game since the original trailer. The fact that ex-Deus Ex guys are working on it only sweetens the deal.

This game's looking pretty damn cool. And genuinely impressive interview, Patrick. Informative without the typical bulletpoint stuff. "Off message" without getting that awkward sense that PR is shitting its pants off camera.

It's really interesting in particular to see how developers work around the issue of narrative in games like this, and I think the biggest successes have been seen in games like Deus Ex, which use that very sense of emergent gameplay to feed you the narrative through things like emails you got when you hacked something, or just events/atmosphere you experience between you go a particular way along your path.

Great interview Patrick. Really impressed by what I've seen of the game and even more so now hearing what the developer had to say about it.

Patrick is really good at making the interviewee feel comfortable; from referencing funny things that only people close to the dev team should know, to being the first to extend a handshake, he comes off really respectful and interested.

I was kind of wishy-washy about this game because I wasn't sure about its direction, but I think I'm pretty sold after seeing this.

I want to give those level designers a heart attack.

Man, I love gb's interviews, good questions, interesting dicussions and the chemistry between the guys and the people they're interviewing always seems more relaxed and friendlier then other places on the net.

Quite looking forward to this game, also October is looking bad for my wallet.

Really looking forward to Dishonored. Never got round to playing Deus Ex, though I watched a friend play some fo it at the time when it came out. By now I think I've worked out this is exactly the kind of game I love so this should be great.

Like others have said, great interview! I also was interested, but not too sure about this game, now I want it badly.

That was a honorable interview. Can't wait to see more of Dishonored.
