Old Games: Encyclopedia Bombastica: Yoshi's Island

While I give the game credit for trying something new, I'm totally with Jeff on this one. Screaming Baby Mario is the worst character ever created by Nintendo, and this game being labelled as a sequel to Super Mario World is a traveshamockery.

Everything about this game is delightful. The music, the sound effects, the level design, Yoshi's constipated grunt as he does his best to push himself further in the air. God I love this game.

Edit: Perhaps the constipated grunt was something that was only in the Smash Bros. games. Still doesn't change how I feel about this game.

I love Yoshi's Island, but if it wasn't for stupid Baby Mario's crying it would have been fantastic.

What if you don't like Yoshi or Baby Mario?

To hear people try to hate this game is insane. It's absolutely amazing, always has been. I've never heard anybody try to say it was a bad game until Jeff started on the Bombcast. As far as I know, Yoshi's Island is universally loved.

This game is fucking great, and anyone knocking its art style is being the 16 bit version of those who derided Wind Waker's.

No really, there was exactly the same reaction back in the day and while this doesn't wow like DKC did it holds up way the fuck better. (Similarly how the GCN Zelda demo excited people but doesn't hold up nearly as well as Wind Waker)

Its gameplay is fantastic, its ideas brilliant and while I don't think it's better than Mario World or DKC2, it's again - still pretty fucking great.

I'm not sure what alternate reality I've been living in then, if ragging on Nintendo is apparently an uncommon bravery.

I think the worst part about Jeff's opinion is that there is absolutely no middle ground. He has adamant that the game is complete shit, which is just dumb. Super Pitfall, Cheetahmen, Metal Morph, Bebe's Kids, those are shitty games. Yoshi's Island while definitely not for everyone, is well above average and not even close to being an actively bad game.

Oh god. This might be an even better idea than competing bombasticas.

You know, it's been a long time since I played this, and I loved this back in the day. I thought, maybe..maybe I'm wrong? Watching the first few minutes with Patrick; nope, still awesome. Forget Jeff on this one, Scoops all the way; yes this game is awesome and still makes me want to play it.

Definitely don't get why people didn't like this game. I only ever played it on the GBA but thought it was an incredible little gem.

Also: Majora's Mask is tied best Zelda game ever.

Patrick your right, but this game is not very good.

Loved this game.

A) You can use your tongue to grab baby Mario when he's out of reach, and if he's WAY out of reach, hit him with eggs to bring him closer. This is crucial.

B) Use eggs to collect items out of reach.

C) Uh, people criticize the boss battles? Have they played any other Mario games?

Eh. I fall right in between Patrick and Jeff. I think Patrick uses a lot of hyperbole to describe this game. It's a good game, but it's not amazing. It's a pretty good game and has an awesome art style, but Baby Mario and Yoshi is a really annoying combination and it should not have been called Super Mario World 2. This is a terrible sequel to that game. I like that it's super different and risky or whatever, but still, it pales in comparison to Super Mario World. Playing as Mario in SMB is way more satisfying mechanically than playing as Yoshi here.

And this is why I think making A Link To The Past 2 is really, really dumb. There's no way it can compare favorably.

Even playing this when I was small I didn't have a great time with it. Boss fights were terrible, nearly all of the music sounded awful, and in comparison with the past platformers it sure didn't play as well. The artstyle I didn't mind so much, I think it looks nice...but that's the only positive I can think of.

Oh and fuck the whole super mario world 2 bullshit, UGH!

@patrickklepek About the bosses, there are some interesting boss fights that you'll get to meet later on past world 2. Also one good tip for grabbing Baby Mario when in the air, you can also touch the bubble with Yoshi's tongue and aim directly upwards to catch him if he's above you (Basically hold up and press Y).

I love most of the Mario games, but my two favourite ones are the odd ones, Super Mario Bros. 2 (yes, it's a fucking Mario game, fuck off!) and Super Mario Land 2. Those games are just so different to the others and full of mental ideas. I like that in my Mario games :)

@obsideondarman: I'm pretty sure both Jeff and Patrick are using emulators to record these. It is a real pain to capture old systems without lots of special equipment.
