Yeah, I don't know about Lamar winning Best Character. He was great and really liked him but best character? Most of the staff weren't even on the same page about the decision.

I am a person very worried about spoilers and I have played exactly 0 of the games featured in the best story category. For anyone out there like me, skip to 45 minutes into the podcast.

@dynamitekyle: @chilibean_3: Bf4 has been patched many, maaaany times. And it still has problems. I should know, I've spent 200 hours playing it. As of the recent patch it's mostly stable but it has been a very long period of problem after problem.

This is seriously some of the best game-related discussion I've heard on a Bombcast, especially the story stuff. I don't think Jeff and Vinny really disagree that much, they're just coming at it from different angles (Jeff what stories are right now, generally, and Vinny on what the potential of the medium). I agree with Jeff in that video game stories right now, in general, are pretty mediocre. That even goes for some of the highly praised stories. That's not to say that the potential isn't there; interactive story telling is so exciting! Anyways, great podcast!

I actually agree with Vinny. It seems like they only think of the best film stories and the mediocre game stories. For every great story in film I've seen, I've seen 100 that are mediocre or bad. Some films like action movies don't focus on story and that's fine. But that goes for a lot of games too. The games that go after story totally are up there with the best movies for me.

Might be my taste in movies though. I don't like the artsy stuff. Maybe I generally just like movies with shit stories by default.

Same question as yesterday: Any heavy "The Last of us" spoilers in here?

@tr0n said:

@san_salvador: Yup, they pretty much spoil the end.

Thanks for the warning. Now if it isn't too much, can you tell me which part of the podcast I have to avoid? It has not to be accurate on the second, but I just started playing it yesterday and still want to hear the rest of the podcast.

The Best story part looped over 2 times seemlessly for me and I was super confused since I thought they were talking and repeating themselves about it for an hour and a half.

Who expected a suicide? I don't get that whatsoever, Bradley and like. Plus, if we're gonna say video game stories can happen in nothing else other than video games, then why not Stanley's Parable? Even if it's just an experiment on plot, the point is that game does some incredible, inventive stuff with how it conveys its message. It can only be in a video game, and it's such an evolution of the medium. No knock on at least Infinite, there's a great reason why it should be nominated and everything, but crossing out Stanley's Parable so easily over it is so dang criminal to me. Unsettling is how I find it all, especially with so much reasoning for Bioshock being nominated for its creativity in the music category, but I guess it's just how these awards shows do.

I have never disagreed harder with the circlejerk that is: Bioshock infinite, the landscapes were beautiful and I really liked the soundtrack, but other than that, the gunplay was shallow, I didn't enjoy the deus ex machina, spoilers, the quantum theory suddenly making it's way into it, as a way to suddenly explain everything. I believe it is a solid game with an enjoyable narrative, but, I believe, the Lutece twins were the weakest character(s) in the game compared to Elizabeth, Booker and Comstock, who aren't even nominees in this podcast

So because there are a bunch of people that enjoyed that game (including me and including the gunplay) it's a circlejerk? ... Maybe you value your own opinion a little too much :)

as I said ... you value your opinion too much. I think the game deserves every bit of praise it gets. To me it was a fun to play game with great characters, a great story and a good ending (even though it was a little hard to understand for me).

I don't mean to be agressive in any way btw. It's just that I think a lot of people speak in absolutes about games too often. If you didn't like the game thats fine, no game is for everyone ... but at least say "To me the game gets more praise than it deserves", don't paint with broad strokes ... because obviously the game was a good one to many people.

As I said, I don't mean to offend.

You will notice that I said "I think the game ..." ... while you said "What I'm saying is that this game is receiving much more praise than it deserves because there are many flaws in it." ... maybe it's because english is not my native language, but your comment reads to me like it's a fact, not an opinion. "The game is not as good as people say, hence everyone that liked it is wrong." ... Usually a game that gets as much praise as BS:I has a chance of being a good experience to most people.

There is always a chance someone (you being proof) doesn't like it, but that doesn't make it a bad game or everyone that liked it is wrong. The praise you are talking about can only be reviews, which are subjective by nature and the opinions of gamers which are also subjective.

I don't want to lessen your opinion, I'm just trying to say (with my limited options, as I said: english is not my native language) that it really bugs me how many people dismiss the opinions of others purely because they don't like a thing :) ... In the end we proabably have to agree to disagree :)

@boomhauer: There's a huge backlash against Infinite on gaming forums, and it doesn't seem to be THAT prominent on the top 10 of gaming sites (some exceptions, of course). I generally think people are being too nitpicky about the game now, not praising it more than it deserves. The GB guys really like the game of course, but I think they're being fair when discussing its flaws etc. on the podcast (the game isn't even in my top 10 of the year, but that's mainly because I hated the gameplay - I really liked the music, how it looked, some of the characters).

Best Music is Assassins Creed IV, sorry any game that has the players learning or discovering music they would normally ignore is doing it RIGHT. Nobody a year ago was listening to sea shanties, now most players are whisper "Drunken Sailor", "Roll and Go" and "'Way Me Susiana".

I think I disagree with almost everything in this GOTY awards so far. Not surprising. I don't care much for indie games, I hate Bioshock, I can't stand GTA, and I thought that The Last of Us had great presentation but HORRIBLY paced gameplay, just like Uncharted before it. Honestly, stuff that I would probably root for with end of year stuff is Beyond, Saints Row IV, DmC, Metal Gear Rising, and various other random things.

Can't believe in the discussion of BioShock Infinite's music no one mentioned Goodnight Irene and only briefly mentioned Will The Circle Be Unbroken. I'd call Circle the motif song of the game.

Jeff's righteous indignation over SimCity was glorious.

Risk of Rain definitely should have been in the top 3 for music. And I don't understand what they meant by "chiptune". There's no chiptune in that soundtrack. There's keyboard, but not chiptune. They're not remembering the music correctly if they're classifying it with that word.

Came here to say this. There's nothing chiptune about Risk of Rain's soundtrack. Also it's fantastic.

I'm sorta bummed KI didn't get at least a serious mention on the music category. Not top 3 I could understand, but seems like it should have at least made the long list (only mention I heard was in brief passing talking about dynamic music, but even the raw music was awesome).

Gotta say, my only disappointment with these talks so far is how little love Bioshock is getting. Makes me wonder if their issues with story lies with bad implementation of science, or a lack of knowledge by the crew on the subject. Personally my only problem with the story was Fitzroy's sudden shift in personality(as mentioned by the crew).

@erhard: I've been there many times. I love Patrick...but sometimes, not particularly this time, how he argues with people and responds sometimes would make my blood boil lol. Brad can do that at times when he's tired near the end of the podcast.

I would say that Amnesia: A Machine For Pigs was one of my big disappointments of 2013. Not only was it subpar in every way to the original but Outlast did everything better.

Battlefield is not really that broken, at least in terms of being on a disappointment list. Dead Space 3, at certain points, can BREAK because of the save system and how it handles checkpoints. I am not sure why some people...especially two in general...are so anti-Battlefield. After comments on the last podcast and now this one I feel as if there is some odd anti-Battlefield sentiments on the podcast. I am 50 hours into Battlefield 4...the problems are smaller and don't effect most people.

Patrick makes an argument, then when someone calls him out.... he totally reverses his opinion and forgets his original outburst.

He also half finishes sentences... like when he tries to say something too complicated for his little brain to comprehend... so he just goes onto saying a completely different point.,

Uh, they mention that they're going to spoil everything from the very first second they start recording, just like they do every year. If Brad had fought for DR3, I would've been super pissed that he didn't reveal it. I'm kinda pissed I'd have to go Google it. Same thing happened a few years ago when the Crew pulled aside to spoil that Silent Hill game. They should've just said it.

@boomhauer: The most circlejerky thing going on about Bioshock Infinite is the "THIS GAME ISN'T THAT GREAT WAKE UP SHEEPLE!!!" zeitgeist. Most people who likes the game (except few people who hyped it up so much like IGN, Adam Sessler) never consider it ~~the most thought provoking video game~~, they like the game because it's fun. The visual is astounding, they give you great moments. It's a great blockbuster movie like Jeff said. Sure, the story is dumb when you think about it, but who cares? That's just most video games.
