Giant Bombcast 03/18/2014

We get a Chicago double as Patrick Klepek comes home to the Giant Bombcast for GDC week! Also, he brought Iron Galaxy's Dave Lang with him, and we discuss Luftrausers, Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes, Dark Souls 2, and real steps you can take to make Windjammers HD a real reality (not really).

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

Played through Peacewalker solo, had no problems with the bosses.

Also there very much is an audio version of the recap to Peacewalker in Ground Zeroes! In fact there is TWO of them! The game gives you 3 way to recap Peacewalker! LOL.

Anyone who did not play it, really missed out on Peacewalker. It was fantastic!

I played thru the all the main missions and most of the side-missions solo. It's totally doable, in fact it's not hard for most of the missions. The later side-ops where you need to fight large bosses are hard for solo.

I'd say that Peacewalker is by far my most favourite MGS game (I have not touched Ground Zeroes yet).

Long-time listener, first-time caller.

Excellent Bombcast as usual fellas. This one helped me uwnind from from a particularly hellish day involving taking my kid to the ER...twice (he is OK). Keep up the good work, and keep stoking the fires of the inevitable Australian civil war.

Also: Can Dave Lang get his own show?

Them saying Cole Phelps ran through L.A. Noire... I walked EVERYWHERE. Since the default speed was walk, it was kind of like Batman in that I felt I should be walking. Plus the game was so grounded in realism I thought walking felt appropriate, and for some reason I didn't get bored at all.

Also, the HD remake for console is hella easy. Being able to use a controller for a game designed for the PSP reduces the difficulty 10 fold. The pokeman/build-your-own-army stuff is fantastic in Peacewalker, tho the plot is a little bonkers and Paz and Chico are both unbearable. I liked it a lot.

The most difficult parts solo are the fuckin Monster Hunter tie-in missions...

I'd buy a Wii U Lite. I'd love to play HD Mario Kart, Mario World and Bayonetta 2, if the price was right and the design of the joypad looked and felt less like Toddler's First Tablet. The actual computing power of the console is not relevant.

All we need is someone from the Northern Territory, South Aus and Tasmania to complete the Aussie picture, even if they don't really count.

This was one of the best Bombcasts in some time, thanks in no small part to Dave Lang.

Also, are we at the point where the emails are now just trolls trolling trolls? They make for some great conversations but I fully expect to hear Jeff read off an email that ends with 'I got in one little fight and my mom got scared.'

Brad is craaaazy if he thinks a faux-Symphony of the Night Kickstarter would be even more successful than a faux-Mega Man Kickstarter. Craaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazy. SotN is very much a cult classic that there aren't a ton of English copies of, and is far more obscure than Mega Man.

Also, glad Jeff called Brad out for thinking that "Heroes of the Storm skins make the characters unrecognizable" when Dota and League have the exact same problem.

I'll never understand saying that summoning is cheapening the experience of the game when it comes to the Souls games. I usually play through them by myself the first time, but playing these games with people is a ton of fun and I pretty much play NG+ and any new characters I make exclusively summoning people, its just a ton of fun.

I hate to seem like I'm piling on here, but I agree with a lot of what's been said here. I stopped listening to the Bombcast for several months (before all of the summer business) because I was increasingly sick of Patrick's dismissiveness and hyperbole, especially when it was paired with straight-up factual errors. I have no problem with disagreement, but something about Patrick's tendency to speak with an authoritative/dismissive tone about matters of opinion (and/or stuff he doesn't know a whole lot about) really gets under my skin. A little humility goes a long way for me.

Let's not pretend that Patrick is the only person at Giant Bomb to speak with an authoritative/dismissive tone about their opinion even when they know little to nothing at all about the subject at hand, of course.

On this whole "why would they go with flipflops or go barefoot when every animal is out there to kill you" thing, the pictures I've seen of Australia's rich wildlife are spiders hiding inside things, like toilet rolls, cups and all kinds of stuff. I'd probably feel safer going barefoot or at least using footwear which I can clearly see there's nothing venomous inside than putting my foot inside a shoe at that point.

Patrick shooting on Peacewalker made me groan. He has no clue what he is talking about.

It's a part of the MGS HD Collection. He has no excuse not to familiarize himself with this gem of a game.

Everyone should. HIs impression that it was "monster hunter like" just goes to show how little he knows about the game at the same time he is dusting it off as being irrelevant.

It's simply not indie or weird enough, man. If it was a browser game it might get a fair shot on "Worth" Playing.

I have to admit that part made me groan as well. As much as Patrick likes to champion keeping an open mind about gaming, he's incredibly dismissive about anything relating to Metal Gear in such a heavy handed and ignorant way it makes me wonder if he has an evil twin or something. It's jarring to see a guy that promotes experimentation and novel game design be so incredibly down on a beloved franchise simply because he doesn't care for it. I guess I shouldn't care that someone doesn't like a thing that I like, but man it does kinda sting - especially since Peacewalker was one of a few really worthwhile titles to own on the PSP.

I've never said this before, normally I like what Patrick Klepek does, but he sounds kinda bit self-centered and self-indulgent in this podcast, dismissing many things as if he's always right. But again, maybe because he hasn't been in the podcast for quite sometime, or maybe it's just the Lang zone that's distorting everything.

I wanna keep an open mind. However, if this goes on, it might be the beginning where I stop listening to bombcast, or start skipping them. And I really hate to say this, I hope that maybe I'm just not in good mood (but I'm in good mood right now), or maybe Patrick just want to vent out something.

Always be introspective and be a better person, okay!

I hate to seem like I'm piling on here, but I agree with a lot of what's been said here. Agreed, I've felt this way many times. And it's one of the reasons why I've never quite taken to his contribution to the podcast and other features on the site.

joining the crowd it seems, yea, stuff like exactly what all you all are talking about is why the only patrick content i take in, is worth reading, and worth playing, His hyperbole and dismissiveness when hes ready irritates me to no end, hence why i havent watched bombin the am in months.

Yep. The shit everybody is complaining about Patrick doing is done by every other GB member except Vinny and Drew. Patrick is not even close to the worst when it comes to speaking out his ass about things he doesn't understand.

Honestly not sure why everybody is crying a fucking river because he said the game wasn't played in the US because it was geared to a Japanese audience. It totally WAS geared to a Japanese audience. It's a co-op game. The story is barely there and what's there isn't very good.

Sounds like Vinny listens to a lot of improv4humans. His "guy in the background" character reminds me of Matt Besser's. Like a whisper-yelling dumb Kermit the Frog.
