I've said it before but the bombcast is at its best when it's not about video games. The first 48 minutes is proof of that. I would love to see a completely 'off topic' podcast!

Brad's loyal affection for old JRPG standard bearers, shunning interest in any outside of them, and Jeff's apparent feeling that the genre hasn't changed since 1994, are why so many people justifiably poke holes in their declarative statements about the state of the genre in 2012.

The off topic discussions can be real hit or miss, but this episode hit, thankfully. Was pretty good. (Though I dislike calling them 'episodes' because it implies a level of insincerity as if they're putting on a show and not being genuine people, which is a bad hole to fall into.)

@AssInAss: Ryan already had reservations about the game mp3 in the quicklook and in the review (than many fans of the first two games agree with and consider valid). It doesn't seem like he changed his mind, but that the others allowed him to elaborate on this issues he had with it.

What game is he back peddling on?

well it's happened multiple times and it's not just Ryan who does this, but the last two examples have been him. Those being AC: Revelations and Max Payne 3, both games he gave 4 stars to, which is supposedly him saying that they are very good games and yet in both cases he has gradually gone back on his initial views as more and more people have said they dislike the game (to the point where it almost sounds like he didn't like them at all to begin with).

I should point out that I don't actually care about reviews, but I'm just pointing this out for the sake of those people who do care so much about reviews.

Dude, the knife, obviously the knife. One hit practically guarantees the bat-wielding person isn't taking another swing, besides you'd be too close by then anyway. Also fuck knives.

When ryan was asking people to guess the first honorary globe trotter, the first person I thought of was richard nixon, and as a result the second person was kissinger. I nearly shit when he mentioned it was the scrofulous ole war criminal himself.

Yet there was no-one with whom to share the moment.

I'm not so sure about the guaranteed OHK ability of a knife, but I suppose once you are that close you can go with a flurry. Though the bat is still usable if used as a barrier rather than a striking tool even at that range.

Brad didn't know Superman is at odds with Batman?

He's definitely not read comic books then :P

In his defense that really only became a thing (other than misleading comic covers) after Dark Knight Returns, because Frank Miller can't see them being friends despite decades of comics to the contrary, and that work had a huge effect on all the impressionable young comic fans that grew up to be the writers later on. Even then it took a while to percolate.

I'm just glad Ryan's weird hangup on Superman was pretty much rebuffed by Brad finding Superman's inclusion to be a liberating and awesome time in comparison to the standard Batman confined abilities of most of the Lego game. IE how any Superman game SHOULD play, just like Cole being able to fly and getting his powers much more quickly in Festival of Blood rather than having to climb up buildings and "earn" his abilities In inFamous 2 was much more fun for Brad.

Looking up wikipedia being "proxy-research" is just as true as doing the same with an encyclopedia or a paper.

If by paper you mean a journal article, then no it is not. Those are vetted by several experts in the field being discussed and are further consumed and critiqued by more experts once it is released. Mistakes can certainly still creep in, but that is a much higher standard than what can be verified for any given fact on Wiki.

It's not as bad as the Wiki backlash of the mid naughts made it out to be, but it's not as good as actual research from the primary sources.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent was always my favorite, specifically because of Vincent D'Onofrio's character. I've yet to meet a person who agrees with me, though. Didn't really like the way the series started to change in the latter seasons, though.

I'm not calling it a OHK, but if you hit you're doing damage, if you miss you haven't wasted much energy or time. With the bat you can't expect the same return on investment and certainly not speed. A miss with the bat is huge, so unless you're incredibly confident you'll incapacitate the knife wielding person in one swing (hitting obviously) I just don't see its feasibility.

Thing is that knife guy has to be willing to cede 1st blood to the bat wielder. Yeah you might miss, and that might bone you (I think the effect of aluminum being smashed crosswise, ie gripping the handle and barrel of the bat, into someone's face are being overlooked) you're in a melee fight, that's true of any set of weapons.
