Regarding the proposed California break-up: never trust a business person who is in favor of breaking up large government entities. Giant corporations have trouble pitting states against one another; it's not like Google is going to move to Nevada if California doesn't change some unfavorable labor law. But the smaller the state, the easier it is for business to leverage their size to sway policy making. California's politics are definitely troubled, but handing over the power to big business is not the solution. Noam Chomsky wrote or spoke much more eloquently on the topic but I'm unable to find the particular piece.

Hit the nail on the head. When the power of 'we the people' is rolled back, the private sector will pick up the slack. And the private sector answers to investors and shareholders, not us.
