Giant Bombcast 09/15/2015

Should Drew buy a Wii U? What's the best emoji of 2015's freshman class? Just how good IS Super Mario Maker? Does Forza 6 still have cars? All these and other burning questions will be explored on this week's edition of... what's this podcast called again?

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

@drewbert re: your Forza hesitation: The games always gate your progress. Nowadays, you just pick a car category out of the six or so they present you with, pick a recommended car, and go. Sure, if you know what you're doing and have tons of Rewards from previous games you can jump straight into an F1 car. But the presentation aspect and the process of easing you into the crazy number of cars has never been better than it is in Forza 6. Given how much you love racing games and being an Xbox guy, you should give Forza 6 a few hours to see if you like it.

@roy42: maybe I misunderstood what you said but what did you mean by "only with the release of N++ did the PS4 feel like a console worth having" because it sounds like you're saying that N++ has singularly made the idea of owning a PS4 have any significance.

That's fair; what I should have said was "only with the release of N++ are there enough games that make the PS4 a worthwhile purchase to me". The Xbox doesn't appear to have anything on it that I can't get anywhere else that's worth paying $500 for, and it took the PS4 until now, with Bloodborne, N++, and a few other titles, to make it on my shopping list, while the WiiU had massive potential for new and interesting games from the start and delivered on them from day 1 in my eyes.

@y2ken: Oh I'll listen to last week's as soon as I get a couple more missions in. I am almost apparently to the point they were I've been told. Besides, it's like having an extra bombcast in the fridge for later :)

I care about Steam achievements, and I have a friend who cares even more than I do about them. We've spent plenty of time in co-op games farming achievements (when viable). And we would never use that achievement manager, there's no point. So there are people who exist that care. I'm actually kind of the opposite of most people - care about Steam achievements, and don't really care about console ones a whole lot. Mainly because I'm a "PC gamer" I guess. I just don't really play consoles at all anymore. When I was playing my PS3 a lot I did like to earn achievements, and still would if I had a current gen console, but I don't.

When talking about stuff that isn't in Mario Maker, Dan mentions the yellow blocks that spin around when you hit them and then become solid again a bit later. I'm pretty sure those ARE in the game, though. I've seen them quite a bit watching other people play.

I'm still disturbed by the fact that Jeff Kramer – the voice of the Seaman creature – is also the voice of FBI agent Francis York Morgan. Isn't that right, Zack?

@roy42: oh yah in that case I completely agree since it's obviously a case by case basis for every person. I just thought the idea that N++ by itself was such a huge deal that seemed really odd to me!

I'm probably going to buy a Wii U for Mario Maker eventually but I see no reason to rush out get one now with massive price drops almost certainly coming when the NX is released in the next year or two. MM is exactly the kind of game thar will only get better with time.

The old achievement tracking on the site was so awesome. Quests were incredibly cool, too.

Metal Gear Zeke was called "Zeke" because that was the Allied codename for the Japanese Zero fighter in WWII.

Like the Zero, Zeke is a pioneering model for its time and concept (the Zero for maneuverable carrier-based fighter planes, Zeke for Nuclear-armed bipedal tanks), chronologically speaking, the first true "Metal Gear" (RAXA from Portable Ops was a prototype and may not actually be canonical), so that's likely the inspiration for it.

The bombcast is the only thing on the internet where I voluntarily listen to the ads.

I also wish Google just went all the way and called its umbrella corporation Umbrella.

Now I want to fire up Super Mario Bros 2 on my SNES this weekend after Jeff's comments about that game. It was the first game I got on the SNES, and the All Stars version is great. Too bad Nintendo Japan wants to forget about it and some of the great characters in that game.

I know I maybe reading too much into this but the level of entitlement that Dan displayed when talking about having to work at Garmin was a bit off putting. Having a degree doesn't entitle you to anything. There are people with PhDs that are working as janitors because you have to do what you can to survive. Oh look I have a degree therefore I'm above certain jobs.

I don't understand all ya'll throwing shade at Super Mario Bros. 2.

Super Mario Bros. 2 was fantastic. This game is one of my all time favorite games, not just "Favorite Mario Game" or "Favorite NES Game" but all time favorite game, up there with Doom, Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past and Diablo II.

Look, I've written about why the game is personally important before on this site, but I think it's a great experience in it's own right, even removing the personal attachment I have to it. The game added the element of picking up items and throwing them, allowed you to pick different characters with their own unique feel and play styles, and the levels were much more engaging than Super Mario Bros. Left to right, right to left, some levels had you climbing, some descending. Some levels had you doing more than one, and the further you got in the game, the more complicated the levels would become. Also, they did things like remove the time limit to complete levels, which I really enjoyed because I felt like it fostered a sense of exploration, which worked well with the levels being more complicated as the game progressed.

Look, Mario 2 is a weird game. It didn't start as a Mario game, but it's been canonized as such. Elements from it have become intrinsic to the Mario series, most importantly the way that the four main characters handle differently than each other, making Mario and Luigi individuals and not just a palette swap and also making Princess Peach and Toad their own unique entities. If that doesn't give it an important spot in the Mario series, well I want to jump off that train asap. :)

Yeah. I put like 100 hours into it on the PSP, completely solo, before the HD version even came out. Then I put 20 or so more on the HD version. It's a lot of fun.

The Metal Gear names in the Kojima-directed MGS games are all U.S. codes for WWII Japanese fighter planes, including ZEKE. Except for the new one, of course.
