I don't get why people are mad about this. Do people want Splatfests to simply be a popularity contest where whichever side got picked by the most players just wins the Splatfest? That kinda defeats the purpose of it being an event that people participate in if all that mattered was how many people joined each side at the start. It sounds like Mayo had a better win record than Ketchup, despite Ketchup having a staggeringly higher amount of players, so I don't mind the results.

@bisonhero Ketchup had a worse record because there were literally not enough mayo players. There were in fact way too many ketchup vs ketchup matches.

@taesoawful: The current Splatfest is set up in a way to completely ignore the popular choice other than the free point it gets. This makes it so that a team can't win by people noticing a winning side and choosing it and then doing nothing.

The Mayo match shortage complaint is nonsensical because the only matches that count are the Mayo vs Ketchup matches. This means that both teams had an equal number of games counted and Mayo won the majority of those matches.

If there is any negative about the Splatfest setup it's that younger children are more likely to choose the side that has more people on it and thus more children have a higher chance of being in the matches that actually count towards the wins/losses. I don't really think there is a way to fix this at all though so it's a non issue.

I don't mind optional cosmetic items in games... but I do mind when they are done in a scummy fashion. Oddly enough, Brad gave a perfect example of scummy exploitation of human behavior (i.e. the list of hats you can buy apparently always below the character in Dota's character selection menu, the "see how it looks" function on the freaking character selection page as well, and the pause before matches tempting the weak willed to sink $90 on a VIRTUAL HAT they can get no other way) and then followed it up with incredulity at people frowning at the cosmetic purchase system in Dota. *shrug*

Like Jeff mentioned, these companies hire the same behavioral psychologists that casinos use to plan out their skinner box systems. They fine-tune such said systems so that you'll get just enough of what you want (Overwatch character costumes, Dota hats, weapon skins, etc.) that your gambler urge stays sated and you keep pumping cash into the slot machine.

Done right, they can be fairly unobtrusive and optional systems that help supplement increasingly more expensive game development (which is why I have no qualms buying Crown Crates and costumes on Elder Scrolls Online. They offer a great product and I treat it like Patreon-ing someone that occasionally gives me silly digital attire in return). Done poorly, they're revoltingly exploitative, explicitly preying on "whales" with bad self control.

I think Dota veers into the latter category way too often, hence my occasional cringe when I see it. :-P

Jeff, due to your love of idle clickers over the past few years they have consumed my life.

I spend most of the day in bed and just play clicker games on my tablet when I am too much pain to sit on my computer and play games there.

Right now I have:

Alost a hero (best current one imho)

Adventure capitalists

Tap to riches

Tap tap fish

Crazy taxi (I don't recommend this one I've put 200 hours or more into actively playing it and doesn't feEl like there is any point to clicking)

Realm grinder

Office space

Slerpy derpy

I mostly play ad cap tap tap riches and almost a hero the rest have been idle for a few weeks.

There are some suggest9ons for anyone interested in clickers with great graphics and don't require any micro transactions.

Any other clicker games people can recommend?

If ketchup disappeared tomorrow it would not be missed much. Mayo is much more versatile.

Ketchup is only good for frys, tots, hash browns and various other potato concoctions and meatloaf while mayo is the base for hundreds of dressings used in or on sandwiches, chicken salad, tuna salad, myriad salad dressings, burgers, fry sauce, potato salad, tartar sauce etc, etc.

For every instance where I have ketchup I probably have mayo 30 times.

Aren't Mortal Kombat X and Injustice 2, that Jeff brought up as bad micro-tractions, the same publisher as Shadow or Mordor? Maybe it's WB that's the problem.

Honestly, the best (maybe only) game to implement cosmetic micro transactions properly right now is Titanfall 2. All gameplay DLC is free, so doesn't give an advantage to or split the player base. And all cosmetics are purchasable directly. No blind-box or gambling psychology trickery BS - everything has a price tag; you pay it and you get what you want.

I don't mind optional cosmetic items in games... but I do mind when they are done in a scummy fashion. @rocketraccooncmro: I wouldn't have expected them to talk about it here - partly because it's an ongoing investigation and legally discussing it is a shaky area, partly because it's less "games news" and more "games coverage news" which feels like a weird thing for them to cover. Several of them have already spoken to it elsewhere, but I'm not sure the podcast is the place for that stuff.

@y2ken: Agreed, politics has a different home, not on the bombcast. Besides there doesn't seem to be much evidence atm, just people spreading the same rumours (have to call them rumours because there's no sources) so it would be ill-advised to talk on it until more evidence comes to light.

@hewitt: I really wish people would get away from this concept of "receipts". It's basically just victim blaming in a different guise. Also, I'm happy to hear their input on whatever they want to talk about. I feel like coming into any GB material with your interpretation of what should be "at home" there is silly. They're the talent, and I'm here to hear their perspective, not some version of whatever it is I want to hear them say or not say to affirm my own beliefs.

Good mayo does have a taste and I like it, however I don't necessarily disagree. Not sure exactly what salad cream is but mayo is the base for adding all sorts of things to liven up the taste if you want.

In some parts of the world ketchup is referred to as tomato sauce (don't know what their term for tomato sauce is, though). Judging by his other comments CABBAGES is from Scotland, so many that's one of those places.

I spread out my listening to this episode way too long so I don't remember much of what I wanted to comment on, if anything, but I will say that mayo is gross. I'm a ketchup and mustard (together) person, and mayo has always disgusted me. I hate how it's considered a norm on most sandwiches and I have to specifically order without it. I also don't like lettuce and tomatoes, so the world just isn't built for me. Anyways, the way in which team mayo won sounds lame.
