Can't believe how young this dude is. He's so genuine and humble about the whole thing. I hope it all works out for him in the long run. Need to try and catch more of his stuff live as I've always been sent the crazy archives.

I also think this interview is a billion times better now that Patrick knows deeply about Spelunky. Something that is unfortunatly not fair to ask of Patrick to be that deep into every game he does an interview for but it's really nice to see here. Great stuff Scoops.

"it just might enough"

To be, or not to be? Patrick decided not to :(

Stoked about this interview, BRex seems like a great guy and Scoops is a pretty damn knowledgeable about Spelunky now.

I started watching the record run over the weekend and somehow ended up watching the full 7 plus hours.

Never played or really seen that much of Spelunky before I watched the stream but ended up really wanting to play it after watching that.

So I downloaded it, but soon realised after starting to play that I wanted to play the version of the game I had just watched - one where you have a plasma cannon & jet-pack from the start!

Super cool interview. I have started watching some streamers lately, mostly speedrunners, and find that world very fascinating.

Incredibly well spoken, you never know what you're going to get with streamers these days.

@stinkygreencat: You gotta pay your Spelunky dues before you get the good stuff. And those dues are paid in blood.

I have 40+ hours and I have never even seen the plasma cannon.

I cannot imagine the kind of patience it would take to seriously attempt any challenge that requires getting Hired Hands to cooperate. Bananasaurus Rex is superhuman.

@memu: Sure, easy enough to get it at the mothership, but after over 100 hours I've never seen one in a crate. Didn't even know that was possible until that stream.

I would say I have an OK knowledge/understanding of Spelunky having watched all of Spelunkin' with Scoops as well as a few hundred runs of my own (never reached Hell, but have beaten Olmec and reached several of the hidden areas). But outside of hearing/reading about Banasaurus' exploits, I don't follow other streams of the game. I didn't know that the Robot was a key to some of these accomplishments - Can someone explain to me what is special about the Robot? I thought it was just an unlockable character/skin. There doesn't seem to be much on the Spelunky Wiki.

@thiago123:

The Robot is key because he is alwaysin the Mothership, unlike other unlockable characters, most of which are random. So it isn't as much the Robot itself, but the fact that the Robot is guaranteed to be there.

I gather you understand why from watching BRex's run, as the Robot can hold the scepter/plasma gun so that it is possible to get to the city of gold with the said gun. Also being that you only need to keep the Robot safe for a few levels helps.

Whenever you find one of the unlockable characters they follow you around like a hired helper. I believe the the Robot always spawns on the mother ship and the mother ship always spawns in the ice caves. The isea is that players will have the Robot carry an item so they won't loose it when they suicide as part of a hell run. I believe that this is the only way to get the eggplant to hell in single player.

Man I wish we could get the seed for this run. Would be awesome to just keep running it knowing you would always have a plasma on 1-1 and jetpack on 1-2. Tho even with it, would be hard to beat BRex's score. The trick he does in the Ice Caves with the mine/rope to be able to ghost those gems that would otherwise fall into the abyss is crazy!! Pretty much an (almost) once-in-a-lifetime run. The plasma gun was right in the first crate by the entrance... not even hidden... crazy.

@fantomspower: You can find seeds with 1-1 plasma cannons for use with seedlunky, but it wouldn't count for anything anyways.

Does anybody know how reliable the daily challenge leaderboards are?

@fantomspower: A recent PS3 daily challenge seed had an alien blaster in crate on 1-2. It was the first time I'd touched one. I promptly shot, hit a shop I didn't know was there, and was killed by the shopkeeper.

@deathpooky: Yeah that was my first time with the plasma cannon and my girlfriend who was watching me would start laughing every time I shot it due to my inability to control myself. It ended up killing me real good. Hey scoops! Just throwin this out there but I would love a Spelunkin' with scoops the podcast featuring Rex where you two talk about your daily runs for the week and general spelunky goodness.

@deathpooky: @pondwhale: Yeah didn't realize that seed-lunky had negative connotations around it. Guess it does mess with the RNG. Would also prob kill my desire to play the game after messing around with that.

Haha awesome. Don't have it on PS3. It is both good and bad that the seeds are different for PC/PS3, is Vita also different or same as PS3? hmm. I would definitely kill myself asap with the plasma.

This guy's voice sounds like Alan Alda. And it's weird how he sounds like a regular Midwestern-sounding American, except for a few words, like out, about, tomorrow, and sorry, that are clearly Canadian. Accents are interesting things.

Been watching Rex since his earlier Spelunky exploits. Easily one of my favorite streamers and is one of the most humble dudes out there. Glad to see his hard work paying off.

This is a great interview with insight into an upcoming streamer and the idea of pro gaming for income in general. Not to mention, Aaron has a great personality and his channel is entertaining itself. Thanks for the scoops!

How did the developer not intend to be able to break the Moai Stature that way? It's the only way to complete an Eggplant run. Did he not intend for Yama to actually get beaten by an eggplant. Or did he intend to leave that "eggplant yama" asset in as a hack-accesable only easter egg?

I've found the most obvious word to track for Canadian accents is if you ask them to say "route".

If they say "root" then the jig is up, rather than saying "r-out". I say this as a Canadian by the way - it's the litmus test I use on my fellow Canucks and I'd say it's accurate 98% of the time.
