I worry about the long-term consequences of encouraging game companies to make the first two parts of a trilogy, and then stop, because finishing the story would be "too obvious."

I'm not terribly interested in Half Life 3 from a gameplay perspective, but I do find the unfinished story annoying. I'd settle for a comic book or something at this point.

Very touching moment from Jeff at the beginning about Dave. You can tell how upset he was about it.

if this "valve all-story" thing comes to a head in valve's next game that'd be great. I love the fiction in half-life and portal, seeing valve merge those two and throw in some other stuff (especially since TF2 has started to build itself a fairly interesting back story) would be really great I think. that's the only way episode 3 could live up to expectations at this point

Valve makes good games, but it's way too late for HL3. The build-up (from fans; Valve hasn't said shit about Half Life in years) has been far too long.

I'm a Half-Life fan and don't really have crazy expectations for a new chapter except continuing the story and atmosphere. It doesn't need any radically different gameplay mechanics to be successful. My guess is most Half-Life fanatics feel the same.

I couldn't agree more. I don't like thinking of half life 2 as a game with no real ending, but every time they leave us hanging, it's what I'm left with.

God every time I hear Jeff ask "Do we really need Half Life 3?" I get so ANGRY.

The only reason we need it is because of where Episode 2 left it. If those didn't exist I think I would prefer Valve never releasing another Half Life game ever again.

The unexpected success of Portal really shook things up. Portal 2 basically took the place of HL2:EP3, one of the key technologies they released a teaster video for, the precalculated physics, ended up being part of the Portal 2 showcase instead of HL2:EP3. That probably pushed HL3 all the way to the next generation of hardware.

Add to that Left 4 Dead, TF2, and DOTA, Valve ended up having way more big things on their plate than they did at the height of the HL2 episodes development.

Yeah, me too. Also I don't think Valve "cares" that much. They will put out HL3 when they think it's ready I just can't see them sitting around thinking "Oh god, what will the internet think of this!".

If Half-Life 3 is nothing more than more Half-Life 2 and is as good as the Episodes and the main game I'd be happy.

Everytime I watch one of these jar videos I spend most of it staring at the back of the room waiting for a ghost to appear or some freaky thing to peer out thru the curtains. Hmmm...not really sure why that says about me, I hope Im not the only one.

I agree. The biggest part of my enjoyment of that series is simply being in the world and experiencing the story. I still think that the gameplay in HL2 holds up fine and I don't really need any huge changes to be satisfied. In a perfect world, Valve would release Episode 3 to tie up the HL2 story arc, while simultaneously setting up something huge for HL3, which wouldn't be far behind because of how long it's been. But sadly that is not the world we live in. Someday Valve will release the next HL installment, whatever the hell it may be, and I bet you it will be fucking awesome.

Indeed. They could have ended the franchise right there with the direction things were going, but throwing on a last minute "call to action" right at the end and doing nothing with it is quite a bit frustrating.

And they've clearly not been working on it since the release of Episode:2 or we would have seen something by now, so it's definitely curious. They have either been cooking something up that's going to blow our minds, or they're just gonna coast on Steam forever. Even just a slight word from Valve to temper our expectations would be appreciated (and unfortunately, that's not how they traditionally work).

btw @jeff Anytime I meet a gamer at work (at a college) I recommend the site. I think we all want the site to grow and become bigger and better. Word of mouth goes a long way. I particularly recommend videos with you and Vinny in them.

Dave's blog post almost broke me too, and I'm just a fan/subscriber. I'm super happy Matt Rorie is back with the crew. That man has been through the ringer this past year or so job wise, but man I'm going to miss Dave. I learned a ton of stuff about the web, and was inspired to change my career just based off the nuggets of knowledge he provided about the web and community alone (getting those inside looks into how the sites came together and his thoughts about web design).

Jeff getting confessional and reflective puts me in a real existential funk.

I'm glad he does it, that he feels comfortable enough to do it. But there's something about it that just fires off the melancholy pathways in my brain.
