This series continues to be one of my favorite things on this website

The Hobgoblin strikes again!

I expect the series is already done recording, but I just have to keep harping on using diagonal movement (on the numpad). That's how you get around corner without giving them a free hit.

Maybe... a run should only be a run if Ben gets beyond Floor 1 - there is so much bad RNG in this game and in the first level you can just get super unlucky. 3 attempts at starting a run and if he can't get out of level 1 then that is a run squandered. Loving it but want longer Binny action!

My only experience with rogue is watching these videos, but my suggestion for making it past the first few minutes would be to carefully explore the first area and take out the easier enemies first until you gain a couple of levels which should give you an easier time against the Hobgoblins. It seemed like it was ignoring you until you got too close to it. Either way really loving these :)

Ben going out on a high note

Incredible.

I'm sure someone in the 80s ran the numbers, but I feel like there must be at least a 40% chance that a Hobgoblin can kill you at your base stats if you stand there trading blows.

Every other floor 1 enemy does either 1-2 damage or 1-4 damage, but the Hobgoblin does 1-8 for some godforsaken reason (your starting health is 12). It's entirely possible for a Hobgoblin to kill you in 2 hits, though you also kill the hobgoblin in about 1-2 hits. In today's case, the Hobgoblin did 3/4/4/[some number >2]. The problem was that all of Ben's attacks missed every single time (literally like 4+ times) while the Hobgoblin only missed once or twice. The accuracy calculations in this game are largely a mystery to me other than it seems they're vaguely based on AD&D.

Ben is leaving Giant Bomb on such an amazingly high note, this series easily ranks in the pantheon of amazing Giant Bomb shows. Can not wait for further adventures down the Rogue Hole

I'm glad we had this Ben / Vinny combo series before Ben departs GB, because it has been an absolute treat.

So I looked up Battle Ska and you what, I can get into it.

This is why it's not good to do one run per episode. It's like Spelunky. You could just run into a dart trap you didn't see, and even if you survive that you trigger some chain reaction that ends up killing you anyway.

People say Spelunky has some of the most BS deaths for a roguelike. But it doesn't hold a candle to the original.

ONE RUN PER EPISODE ONLY! It's not changing. And even if it could change, they shouldn't. Because an episode potentially being 1 minute or 1 hour long is part of what makes it amazing.

That blue potion was more forgettable than Rodney

I've only played Nethack, not Rogue, so I'm always wondering which mechanics are in this game too. Eg. in the previous episode they were asking if you can zap a wand at yourself, which you can do in Nethack by aiming with the . key. Another question I had was if you can use the nymphs to remove cursed objects.

Of course I don't expect Rogue to have all the myriad possibilities of NH, but until watching this series I always thought it was a much simpler game than it is.

I dont think they stole equiped items. But, if they do, the only way to ensure cursed steal would be to drop everything else. I am pretty sure they had a preference for wands and rings, but i am not bothering to look anything up :P

If you don't want to know, navigate here straight from the main page, not the videos page, which shows the runtime and then don't scroll down to where you can see the carousel, which will also give away the runtime.

@shindig: You can avoid that if it matters to you, but even if you don't the erratic jumps in episode length are still an amusing feature of the series, regardless of whether or not they're a surprise.

Don't get me wrong, I saw the runtime and thought, "Alright, Rogue speedrun!" but knew deep down that wasn't the case. Still, 7 more runs to go.

i love how that we can guess this was taped around the sametime as 6 because you can still here the marbles hitting the floor in Vinny's house

The lesson here is never run on level one.

Oh my gosh this series is so wonderful and hilarious, especially the short ones haha

This is my favorite episode yet! I loved The Rock in this.

SAFARI, starring Rock "The Dwayne" Johnson as Kool Good Miracle, Matthew McConaughey as Moist Openings, and Steve Zahn as me, comedically jabbing at my phone with my eyes half-closed, so as to start these videos without seeing the runtime.

This series continues to be an absolute delight.
