Quick Look: Battleship

Why is the HD video so crappy now since the new video player?! Giantbomb, I pay you for good quality video! Fix it please! It used to be great quality.

Bahaha! PEG attack. Oh man, kudos to them for finding little ways to tie it back to subtly tying it back to the board game.

Looks ok. Whenever you disengage from the BATTcom (tm) it makes the same noise that Gears does when you're about to die.

The game has some rough edges. The map loading is way too slow, the NPC AI seems a bit dumb; but the strategy map and wildcard stuff looks really compelling.

From the video this game looks surprisingly alright (color and shits).

An adaptation of a movie that is an adaptation of a board game, is this seriously real? The movie looks like a generic alien invasion film. All that naming it Battleship, and making the alien bombs look like board game pegs, did was make the director and writers look like jackasses. This is like one massive cosmic joke.

I still get the giggles whenever I watch this trailer because it really does look like a joke. The game itself would just be another standard blockbuster cash in, but it suffers from the same thing. The relation to the board game is completely ridiculous. It deserves every bout of mocking it receives. The game play does not look very fun either.

I'm just waiting for Don't Wake Daddy: The Movie: The Game. Fuck yeah.

Street Fighter: The Movie for a new generation!

When this game is on for $10-15, I might find compel to buy this.   You know, before this was released, I said to myself, "That game is gonna be alright, because it's got a good idea and looks functional."

Does anybody else notice that at 4:30 the guy we are looking at's chest is black but his arms are white?

Based on reading the comments I was expecting total crap, but it doesn't seem that bad. Granted I will not buy this game, or even rent it, but it seems okay if it was a lot cheaper than retail price.

Maybe a rental for someone who wants achievements.

You know, this game didn't look half as bad as I expected. Its oddly compelling with the whole "manage your ships + FPS" gameplay. I might actually rent this from GameFly. Thanks, Ryan and Pat =)

Right now this has a 41 on Metacritic which exactly matches the movie. Its apparently a few hours spread across seven levels. Though its worth noting that none of the major review sites have a review up for this despite it probably only taking an afternoon to review. So I guess everybody is playing Diablo III, fair enough.

If I recall correctly, the director wanted to make a generic alien invasion film, but such a thing wouldn't really do so well in today's film release climate full of generic alien invasion films, so they attached a franchise to it. Any old franchise will do right? Battleship? Yep, just slap it on, it'll do.

Yeah, if I'm honest this game doesn't look THAT bad.

It's got an interesting blend of RTS and FPS. Probably worth renting, but nothing else.

@OriginalGman: Agreed, wouldn't mind seeing a GB review of this as it looks short to get through plus another XBLA game to possibly get.

I like how this game suits the WiiU controller or the 3DS' extra screen, but being activision, never had a chance to be on those systems. Hopefully some up and coming developer capable of making a turn based strategy game AND a dumb military shooter will crib the idea of a game that's both.

This game actually looks like it had some potential. I am very surprised about that.

I felt the same way about the movie. It's not that good of a movie, but considering what it's based on it feels like it should be a lot worse. I mean... on one hand maybe it's a good sign that even horrible ideas are being executed on with some sort of quality, but on the other hand they made a movie (and tie in videogame) based on the 'board'game battleship! I totally went to that movie expecting so bad it's good, and was disappointed, cause If that was decent, where can you find so bad it's good anymore(other than old movies I mean)?

Fuckin... this and the sonic quicklook were great Ryan classics... LOVE IT! That giggle at the beginning. RIPRTD
