The listening is a core mechanic, it gives you sound cues that lead you to the quest clues you are looking for. I had a feeling that the subtleties of this were gonna be overlooked by Brad. He did not disappoint. Also you can melee boxes and get gold and items. Typical Brad thinking he knows games so he stops paying attention to what this game is telling him, and misses some pretty important features.

Holy shit this is set in Canada, Fort Henry is near Kingston, Ontario

As others have said, Fort Henry is not a particularly unique name for a fort. Also I'm pretty sure there was never any significant Spaniard presence in any part of Canada, so the French would've made much more sense for the weird zombie soldiers.

Also, Brad, I'm pretty sure the game said up front that if you hit enemies unawares, it does more damage. Everything seems to be a one-hit kill on unalerted enemies (melee, arrow, musketball), but yeah, once they're alerted they take more hits from everything. F.E.A.R. did exactly the same thing, where a single headshot would kill somebody if they weren't aware of you, but once you alerted guards, they would take like 2-4 headshots.

This game seems cool. Though seeing a Crude Longbow makes me wonder if by the end you get a Flaming Longbow of the Owl or something. And yeah, pretty sure the colour saturation thing got put in because a bunch of crybabies on the Steam forums didn't like the look of it back when it first launched.

I had heard about the color slider thing and was disappointed they didn't find it but as I was about to click stop I noticed the extra 10 minutes left on the video and knew that they were about to find it. Personally I'm not sure if I would use color, but on the same token, I agree with Brad that I'm sure they decided they would prefer people to play it in color rather than not at all.

I feel Jeff and Brad both fall prey to this. In Brad's case, his gut reaction is that he must already understand how a video game works, so in Quick Looks he often overlooks very simple mechanics or puzzles because he gets locked into how he thinks it must work. In Jeff's case, it's more that he thinks he knows how games should play, so if they don't play that way he just irrationally dismisses them (for example, it seems like he doesn't like Dark Souls/Monster Hunter because they don't just let you run in and mash out combos like God of War/Darksiders/recent Devil May Cry, or Metroid Prime plays more like a Zelda game than an FPS but Jeff feels betrayed that it doesn't play like an FPS). It seems like if a game defies his expectations enough he'll come back around and respect it, but it seems really hit or miss.

Vinny, Partrick, and Drew (and Ryan) all seem much better at being open to what a game is telling them, and not getting locked in to what they think it must be.

Drew saved this quicklook a couple times. I kept wishing he would tell Brad to try the listen mechanic again though, it's kind of essential to actually figuring out where to go and making progress.

Headphones are highly recommended. The soundscape is spine-chilling as fuck. Having to hear out the enemies and loot is pretty cool. I have used the wind to straight up run up behind dudes. I have not figured out the use for the Listen mechanic. And I'm not really using the weapons, just employing a standard "whack-to-the-back" approach like most stealth games.

Right now, I feel like a paranormal detective, figuring out the deaths and how to investigate :D

The wind is calming against the creepy and mysterious atmosphere.

@assinass: The listen mechanic is used like radar. Press the listen button, and you'll hear some crazy sounds. Rotate around and you'll notice that it's probably several different sounds coming from different directions. Head towards a sound and periodically hit the listen key, as you get closer the sound will get louder and creepier sounding, until you get to the place it's coming from which will be a clue or something relevant to progressing the story.

There's also an option in the menus to add a visual indicator for the listening if you have trouble using it.

Life must have been pretty dreary before the invention of the color TV.

Also someone should do a horror game with all Looney Toons sound effects.

About the colour/contrast settings, they weren't there during Early Access. There was moaning from people on Steam forums. I myself had at one time glitched out to seeing the world in colour. So yeah, they'd rather have people still play the game if they couldn't handle the intense contrast.

@brad You forgot that you can melee the square boxes lying around, they'll have loot usually.

I'm going to take a wild guess that Brad was missing something and that's why he died so much. Still, this game seems really creepy.

EDIT: okay, they got it by the end. Also that color contrast slider is nuuuuuuuts.

I don't think giving the player a choice in visuals makes this game "compromised." Pure, high contrast, black and white does things to my eyes.

@everettescott: What it shows me is that people feel they need to point it out again and again and again and again and again and again in the comment sections of QLs. It's just useless. What does these sorts of comments accomplish except for being the same negative crap every time? It's not that I'm not open to criticism of the GB guys, it's just that this is getting so fucking old.

I'd hope the sliders are there to cover the wide field of colourblindness and other visual impediments people can have, rather than appeasing fuckwits who didn't like the art-style. They are a better option than a single toggle.

Brad's idiocy and "oh wow, oh wow, unexpected, oh wow" bullshit really kills me on my inside with a rusty dagger.

Vinny however makes it a funny and relaxing experience!

This game is very cool and I've played about 4 or 5 hours in. The freedom of exploration is pretty incredible, and the little mysteries you solve are almost universally interesting and tragic. Once you learn the storytelling some of the twists become predictable but that's a minor complaint.

The enemies in the next are are fuckers who use stealth mechanics AGAINST YOU. They hide in vegetation so they are nearly invisible and make animal sounds to communicate to each other (so they can all aggro you at once). It is tense and very interesting to skulk around in the fields and forests over there.

Painting colonization as cruel is hardly original, but this game does a decent job at providing a nuanced take. The broad strokes of "empires only wanted to get rich and this was someone else's land, wah" are mostly avoided. Instead, the wickedness of individuals gets highlighted, with an insidious but individualized approach to getting what they want. The Eurogamer review (which I recommend anyone read) compares it to "a cancer," which I think hits the nail on the head.

Jesus, people, it's like you come to Brad videos with your petition in hand, rock hard at the prospect of sharing everything you find disagreeable about him as an individual. Learn to deal with other human beings and all their minor idiosyncrasies, your life will be a happier one.
