Quick Look: Dead Island Riptide

The first Dead Island was a broken mess. Funny at first, but when I am told to follow a guy who falls down the steps of his own house, ragdolls face-first into his own campfire and dies with a 'follow' icon remaining over his dead corpse, it becomes far less funny.

Dead Island should never have had a sequel (or spinoff, or whatever), that game got REALLY boring in it's back-end

It's probably been pointed out, but the scream that Vinny was talking about is the "Howie scream", and it was, indeed, the callout sound effect used for the Terran Academy in Starcraft.

It got it's nickname from Howie Long's death scene in "Broken Arrow", even though that wasn't where the scream originated.

It's a standalone expansion pack, @brad. What do you object to about that classification? It's not called Dead Island 2, and there have been plenty of other standalone expansion packs.

So it's more Dead Island. Not new Dead Island, improved Dead Island or modified Dead Island. Just more Dead Island.

I rather play like the first hour or two in Dead Island, then play this right now. I agree with Brad and think the first game when you're at the resort area is the best part. I haven't played the DLC for the first one. Maybe I'll just buy that.

So basically, and I can't believe I'm saying this, Deep Silver should have followed Capcom's lead? i.e. Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen released the same day, is a stand alone expansion, but contains the original game and a bunch of improvements and new content. I had lots of fun with Dead Island so I can pick this up on sale.

And Brad, oh man, why are you waiting until the walkers are in an attack animation before swinging at them? Kick and crush, duder.

Not sure what the confusion is over calling this an expansion. It is an expansion. A ridiculously expensive expansion, but an expansion none-the-less.

Reviewers always act like this isn't a very "good" game. Yet they all seem to play it and had a blast playing it. Brad even admits, reluctantly, that he spent " way too much time" playing the first Dead Island. In my book, if you play a game "way too much", and have a lot of fun playing it, then the game is a pretty damn good game.

That scream mentioned (the ghost academy one) is the second most famous scream. It is the Howie scream.

Don't you want people to watch videos on your site? Cause this video player is still god awful. It kept randomly going over to something that looked like less that 240p, unwatchable. Freezes, can't seek, ugh. Off to youtube again.

Can't speak globally, but it's in the full priced range where I live. You do not require the original game to play this. That all doesn't seem like an expansion. It is true that expansion... well.... expand upon the game that's already in place, so in that sense this would qualify as an expansion I guess?

Either way, whether it is an expansion or not will not matter for the rating of the game. If it were an expansion, it is far too high priced for just an expansion and should have featured full fledged sequel-like content. If it's not an expansion, than it's priced far too high and needs to drastically lower its price.

I think the ombudsman said it well in one sentence in the podcast: the asking price is far too high for what it is.

I wouldn't say that. There are lots of times where you can spend a lot of time playing a game, but not enjoy it, where it feels like drudgery. AC3 Revelations: Good enough to make me keep playing, boring enough to make me wish I was doing something else with my time.

I am starting to think that Techland is a group of brilliant trolls making money off what makes them laugh.

just wanted to say that not letting me click "youtube" and it saying I need to be a paid member of this site to simply watch the youtube on this site (the youtube vid works a lot better than GB's hosted videos)......all that did was make me go to youtube to watch this video.

Good job keeping the traffic on giantbomb.com what a fail by hiding a free service (youtube) behind a paywall you just made sure I check your youtube channel for videos and only come on here for forums since the news has dwindled in the past years.
