Question for someone watching in the future: how far into the game do they get? ie. how much of the game can I play before I can watch this video? I'd rather play it for myself before watching someone play it.

The game is excellent, ignore the horrible PR/demo. Feels very much like a mix of Dead Space 1 and 2.

The brazen shit-service to the PC port has taken this from a "pre-order" title for me to a "buy it when it's $10 on Steam or $20 on console" title. I probably was going to buy it and play it on console, because that's where I have the first two games in the series -- but even if I did that and the PC version therefore didn't impact me, I wouldn't buy it at launch or for anywhere near full price out of principal.

Did you do the same with Dead Space 1 and 2? Because they were the same bare bones port as Dead Space 3.

@Branthog: The PC port is actually really good, it's just not at the level of other superports such as Sleeping Dogs. PC Dead Space 3 actually has more options than the previous DS games, including SSAO and different anti-aliasing modes. The v-sync actually works as well. However it has the same textures as PS3/360 versions.

GameSpot said the story was bad and convoluted, while IGN said it was forced. I'll see when I finally play it, but I don't see how this is so.

@IronHam: Except that its not a horror game anymore. They whored out Ellie, there is universal ammo though EA said they wouldn't have it, 11 pieces of DLC day 1, micro transactions, cover system, human enemies that shoot back, baby enemies from previous game removed instead we get infected dogs.

I bet this game only has co-op because EA wanted an excuse to put an online pass in, I guess they gave up with adversarial after how shit the multiplayer in 2 was.

edit: oh Brad played it on normal too, how weird, normal mode in Dead Space 2 was easy to the point of it being game breaking for me, far too much ammo, nothing posed a threat.

Do you really want me to address all of these? It retains the tension from Dead Space 1 a lot of the time, Ellie isn't "whored out (what?)", unviersal ammo gives way to a more complex weapon crafting system, day 1 DLC sucks I'll give you that, micro transactions I haven't looked at yet in 14 hours, human enemies that only showed up once in 10 hours of gameplay, a cover system I don't know how to access. Besides, what's wrong with space-dogs? I LOVE ME SOME SPACE-DOGS!

It's definitely a lot less linear in the overall sense of the world. As in, there are optional missions you can pursue and stuff you can do before/after key storyline segments, however the gameplay itself once you get to these key/optional missions is very much like the original Dead Space. The game really takes the best out of both games. I started on Zealot difficulty and thought the game was easy but the difficulty really ramps up past a certain point and it's creating a lot more tension than I thought it would.

Also don't want to spoil this mechanic, but the "cover" system is a simple crouch button that comes into play against a new necromorph enemy more than it does with the extremely infrequent human enemies.

It doesn't retain the tension, the game is never tense or scary. Several reviews touch on this. Even EA said it, they are not doing a horror game anymore, they are doing an action game and that is what Dead Space 3 is. If you like pure action without any attempt at horror then you might like it, but fans of the first two will be sorely disappointed.
Ellie has bigger boobs and a shorter cut shirt. Universal ammo removes any tension since you never have a shortage of ammo, you constantly have ammo to spare.
There is nothing inherently wrong with space dogs but it shows the general direction of the product. We went from gunning down necromorph infants in a daycare center in Dead Space 2 to killing space dogs and humans. These are steps to make the game more SAFE, nothing that can be offensive or even disturbing. It has lost much of its soul from the previous games in favor of an action game with focus on crafting guns and shooting stuff.

Lol, the "oh , I didnt know what those are for" when he realises he can use ration seals to buy the resources, when it clearly says "buy with ration seals" on the screen in big letters.

I think the sheer volume of vidja games and related nonsense on Brads brain has broken his mind somewhat.

Edit : seals, not packs

Yes, I'm sure the tension I felt while playing the game was of my own imagination. Now let me get back to this game with the newfound knowledge EA has given me that the game is purely action now. How can I feel any tension now?

Universal ammo has nothing to do with "shortage of ammo". In the previous games, the game only dropped ammo for the weapons you had on your person. So say you only had the plasma cutter, it would only drop PC ammo. How the universal ammo changes "shortage of ammo" is beyond me.

I can definitely understand the apprehension surrounding this game. I was really worried because of all the terrible PR Visceral/EA have been putting out for this game, but decided to preorder it on Origin as I'm a big fan of the franchise and wanted to ride it out, even if it was bad. The game I'm playing is so, so much better than the demo/marketing would lead you to believe. Even the demo segment is nothing like it's counterpart in the game.

I am obviously not saying that you didn't feel any tension, but if you did you are one of few.

Its not only that there IS universal ammo, its the amount. It drops constantly, and you have ammo for every weapon despite what the situation asks for. In previous Dead Space you used certain weapons to conserve ammo in the more powerful ones, in this you can use whichever you want and still always have ammo left for situations that you need just one.

Its fine if you enjoy it, but please don't compare it to Dead Space 1, its nothing like it, at all.

The "using weaker weapons to converve ammo mechanic" is still in the game. The more powerful weapons use more ammo units than the weaker ones, so again, it is practically the same system. If you wanted to conserve the biggest amount of ammo for your "powerful" weapon, you can do so by using low-powered ones instead. And I will say that you should play the game before making a definitive "the game is never tense or scary" instead of just counting on random reviews (I'm assuming this as you've said "Several reviews touch on this. Even EA said it, they are not doing a horror game anymore"). And yes, the game does compare to Dead Space, very favorably. It's much closer to Dead Space than Dead Space 2 ever was.

I wish this series had gone full metroidvania style. The whole idea of being stranded in space alone and finding your way through a ship would make a great action/horror game. The talking bits in 1 always ruined the atmosphere for me and I didn't play 2 as I didn't want a action game with horror game controls. This one seems to be split between two ideas and a lot more press button monster attack go foward

1st Dead Space is one of my favourite games, Dead Space 2 was good so I'll end up playing this at some point, it's hard to tell how the combat is on you'r first play though since Brad was doing a new game plus with heaps of supped up gear, but saying that the crafting system has my attention, pretty much borderlands gun in Dead Space...why not.

@IronHam: How is it anything close to Dead Space?
Dead Space was a horror game, it had Isaac completely isolated on the Ishimura. There was very few times he actually interacted with other people. It was a game about an engineer trying to find his girlfriend, alone. That was the best part about Dead Space, the isolation, the feeling of helplessness and having no idea what is going on here. The game did this while unraveling a bittersweet tale about the fate of Isaacs girlfriend and the people of the Ishimura.
Dead Space 3 on the other hand has constant interaction with other people, the sense of isolation that was so prevalent in Dead Space is nowhere in this game. Instead we have constant interaction with other people, through cutscenes and radio chatter. We have a completely forced love triangle, we have a story that isn't in any way subtle and takes a front seat to the atmosphere. The focus here is to craft the biggest gun you can find, hopefully while laying down some cash to get it even better, and then mow down enemies. Dead Space wasn't like that, at all.
