This DLC was kind of underwhelming from a presentational angle, but at the very least Vergil plays differently than Dante and can keep himself in the air for an absurd amount of time.

I really don't get what the deal is with them harping on the production values. It looks cool to me, and I'm not seeing any jank or rough edges.

Seems kinda fun. I'll probably wait for a GOTY edition... if one ever comes.

Probably not. I mean, it's not like this game is GOTY material, even if it is good.

Plenty of games have gotten GOTY editions without actually being good enough to be game of the year

Yeah, like the original Borderlands, right? And also Dead Island? I don't think those games received any GOTY awards, or at least not a lot, yet they still got GOTY editions anyway.

In any case, if in fact they do re-release this game in the future, they probably won't call it a GOTY edition. More like Ultimate Edition or Complete Edition or "FUCK YOU" Edition (no wait, that last one sounds like a Collector's Edition name type).

The original Borderlands got quite a few actually.

You're right about that not really mattering. GOTY editions are usually just "when we think we can sell it."

Listening to Brad and Patrick talk about Vergil's story and fighting style in this DLC without the obvious references to DMC3 and DmC's future is mind numbing.

Surprised theyre so positive bout this. Bought it and its absolutely terrible. I imagine it was created by completely different people to the main game.

The story is really fuckin bad, the music is no longer dubstep, the visuals are uninspired and it made me a little depressed to play through it all. I dont recommend it.

Sounds like DmC in general without the dubstep and inspired visuals.

No I like DmC the normal game. The storys pretty damn good in that, and they direct it very well, and put some humor in there. None of that is here

I agree (And said so earlier on) as someone who really liked DmC I thought this DLC was bad. In addition to everything you said, Virgil isn't even fun to play.

DmC is probably the runaway winner for the most decisive game of 2013... I thought the main game was fine, way to much stuff coming out now, to go back to it, but maybe in the summer I'll nab this DLC.

@golguin: Is DMC3 that bad? I don't remember it being that grueling, then again I played it a ton and got quite good at it. Plus he has SE with the extra difficulties (and Vergil campaign and the extra character skins).

Speaking of DMC3, fucking DOPPELGANGER!!

DMC3 isn't bad it's great and the difficulty was just right. I've seen Brad playing DMC1 and he can't bring that to the table of DMC3. Do you remember the Cerberus fight and how reviewers at the time couldn't even get past him? It's the reason why SE had easier modes.

Nah man, DMC3 is incredible but it's held back a little by its level design.

The fucking RE style "retrieve key, then exchange for another key" was so annoying and led to a lot of stupid backtracking and refighting the same enemies a lot if you didn't know where to go, which was usually the case on first playthrough.

However, the combat was so good it more than makes up for it. If they made a DMC3/4 style game with decent level design for once (and dropped the god damn platforming) I would never play another game. I guess Bayonetta was kind of that, but I still disliked the minigame sections (bike, flying section) and didn't like Bayo's combat as much as DMC3s.

@nightfang: Little known fact but in DMC3 if you have a second controller plugged in and press start on that controller with Doppelganger activated that second controller will be able to control the double, use super Dante so you've got infinite DT and that's pretty close to coop DMC3, can be awkward due to camera control but it's still pretty awesome.

That trick also works for the boss fight in mission 19 when Vergil shows up.

@obikwiet - wait...your not buying this because of the way his hair looks in the thumbnail? bwhaahahahaahahahahaaaaaa!

I know, right! How crazy is it that someone would not buy a game because of the main characters hairstyle?

@humanity: I don't know, Brad was really into this that I thought he'd discover / rely on some of the cancels. But yeah, the game's perfectly playable on all difficulties without any of the tricks.

Is it wrong that I want a Fedora Vergil more than I want an OG Vergil skin? I'm not ashamed !

I think Brad just liked it a lot. Like most casual gamers he will play it once, beat it, and never touch it again. Most people that aren't really into these games but enjoy playing them won't ever get into something as obscure as jump cancelling into different attacks or devil trigger shenanigans.

Some guy on YouTube already posted a way to glitch it so you can control your Devil Trigger doppelganger which makes for some weird combos.

@humanity: Actually, I'm a DMC fan and I liked DmC allot also.

I also liked this DLC. The story aspect is not so good, most of the presentation and story-telling from the main game is not in here.

But the gameplay is great. I like playing as Vergil. Surprised they didn't just copy most moves of Dante but made him have his own moves. More Devil Trigger versatility. Some more of the options of the Doppelganger can actually create some interesting combo's.

In short: story-wise: not interesting. Gameplay-wise: interesting.

How did you mash through Cerberus when so much of the fight depends on dodging?

Agni and Rudra required managing both their healths unless you wanted to deal with a super version with almost full health.

This DLC is an entirely forgettable money grab. Uninspired, rehashed environements (which stand out especially in comparison to the main game), terrible writing, motion comicy things instead of full cutscenes. And you can sum up the "plot" in a sentence or two on a wiki page. Blergh. Even the one boss encounter is mostly copy&paste from the main game with some minor changes.

If a developer can't be bothered to make actual cutscenes for its story-driven DLC, than I just can't be bothered to buy it. It's inexcusable.

They put the efforts where it counts, the move sets and depth controlling the character. Vergil left shallow at first but I'm learning new tricks to play him on a daily basis. The timing charge moves is a game changer for me.

Beaten it 2 times now, will likely finish off Vergil Must Die this week. I am very disappointed that he's not available for Bloody Place....WHYYYYYYYYY, I just want a NON stop arena.

The method used for story telling is fine, but the story itself is ranked among garbage and a bullshit uhh? ending. The old Vergil back story and his thirsty for power was based on how he couldn't protect his mother.

Vergil Cain is the name and he was in the Nephilim game, till all the fanboys came and shouted that he was lame, in the spring of twenty thirteen his twin brother was really extreme, I came home to beat Hell and Hell it took time I remember oh so well.

The night they drove old Dante down, and the bells were ringing.
