Shout out to Jeff for making the sweet Firefox reference that will most assuredly go over the heads of 99% of this audience. That movie is AWESOME.

So, how instanced is this game? Is that news feed the same for all players? Is everyone in the same universe?

I use mouse and keyboard to play elite dangerous.

i look around using alt+mouselook. Just like in the ARMA games.

also, my ship has a friendship drive instead of a frame shift drive.

@drewbert, regarding how to find a specific commodity, what i do is figure out what kind of economy type produces a certain commodity.

for example combat stabilizers. They are produced by High-Tech systems/stations.

So if i want to get some i just sort the galaxy for just High tech systems, and then just jump to the closest one.

No Caption Provided

If that system has multiple stations, i then look in the system view to figure out which one/ones in the system actually have a high tech economy.

No Caption Provided

As you see on this last image, you can see some of the commodities the station exports, even though combat stabilizers is not on that list, they might still sell some.

This method works for most stuff, Combat stabilizers in particular are apparently illegal in most of the galaxy, and i quote the wiki article

Combat Stabilisers are a specific item of Medicines in the world of Elite: Dangerous. A commodity that is broadly illegal, combat stabilisers can be found in dropped cargo containers. As dropped containers seem to be the only known source of the drug, players should exercise caution before accepting missions that require the provision of combat stabilisers, as this will often require searching for a target carrying such goods, or for abandoned containers at an USS.

Drew + HOTAS + TrackIR = Good times.

Maybe for a UPF you all could borrow a Rift DK2 and let Drew go crazy. Love this game, even with its many faults. The developers seem dedicated and willing to make the game even better.

There is no instancing. The "random encounters" (Unidentified signal sources) out in the middle of space are locations where it is extremely unlikely that you will run into other players, but no matter where you are or what you do you are always in the same universe.

This game is amazing, but I hate that trade is by far the best way to make money. No other profession even comes close. By trading items labeled "rares" (that always appear in the same stations) you can make enormous profits. I love combat and exploration, but any time I do them I feel like I'm wasting time that I could be using to make trade runs. That would be fine if the more advanced ships weren't so goddamn expensive. hopefully some balance patches coming in the future.

@drewbert That blue ship icon is your second ship. If you're gonna go bounty hunting, I recommend you switch to that one. You can get to it by docking on that station.

I also found bounty hunting to be a really great way early on to make money. My trade routes were kind of ineffective. It's also super fun!

Man, this looks and sounds so awesome. I just had the biggest, dumbest grin on my face watching this. I want to play it, but have no idea how it would work with, say a controller. Though this is the closest Drew has come to selling me on a flight stick and Track IR.

@johncallahan: hi, been playing since early beta and it works very well with the controller - although some may want to tweak a few options here and there. Specifically the 'Yaw into Roll', which you may want to turn off, giving you normal roll as you'd expect on your left stick's L/R. Yaw is still useful occasionally however so I made it so I hold the B button when required. I still use the keyb for jumping and landing gear though they can both be done from the ship's HUD menus. In flight the right stick does lateral thrusters, with R3 toggling on free look.

Took a little while but I’ve got this working very well on a 360 controller and keyboard found a flight stick to be a bit hard going as I wasn’t used to one.

I think Jeff was understating how big the original Elite was in the US. There was a huge community for the C64 and Amiga versions.

Even in a peaceful universe, micrometeorites and other debris could damage them. Elite's universe isn't particularly peaceful, so you wouldn't want them damaged in combat either, I assume.

I might finally break and get Track IR for this, although I'm hesitant since what I really want is the consumer version of the Oculus Rift when it finally comes out.

TrackIR seems like a great way to play this game, but I have one question about it. If you turn your head to the left or right are you no longer looking at your monitor? Is it not as big of a deal in practice?Because to me it seems like, unless you have multiple monitors or one huge monitor, you would turn you head and be looking at a wall instead of your monitor.

@drewbert I've had the most fun bounty hunting in the game, when you arrive in a system look in the navigation menu for 'Nav Point' it is near the star you arrive at, go there like you would a station and wait for the pirates....... ....also some systems have Resource Extraction Points in the rings of the big gas giants, same deal as the nav points.

As far as I understand, the amount you have to turn your head isn't actually as major as it looks like in the game, so most of the time you should be able to rotate your head while still keeping your eyes focused on the screen.

Drew explained this in the most recent bombcast. It's not 1:1 tracking your head movements, rather it exaggerates your movement so you only have to turn your head 10 degrees to turn the in-game head 90 etc.

Why would you want to retract your landing gear in space?

Because they're structural weakpoints that aren't armored. That's my guess atleast.
