Does that guy have to explain every.single.thing in such detail? I thought the quick looks were meant to be "dudes playing the game and recording it", this feels more like PR spiel like Bruce above me said.

I actually screamed "FFS" when he just kept going on and on, and at that point Ryan told him that no one cares which calmed my anger a bit.

For everyone who seems to hate Kessler: lighten up.  These things aren't easy.   He's new and he's trying.

For everyone who seems to love Kessler: you lighten up too.  He's got some legitimate presentation problems.

For everyone who seems to like Kessler but may have some issues with his Quick Looks (me included): I think the real problem here is that he's describing this game as if we can't look at it for 45 seconds and know exactly what we'd be getting if we played it.  They have some 8 minute QLs on this site and sometimes that's all you need.

Anyway, the fact that there are something like ten pages of comments on this video means that they're pretty popular no matter who's presenting, so I guess we should all lighten up.

I am all about letting new people try things but Matt needs to just play the game instead of as its been said seem like he is trying to sell it.  Hang in there bud, you will get the hang of it.

Poor Ryan though, seems like he could give a fuck less about even being in this QL.

I think the first QL Matt did was pretty bad, the second was much better and this one is pretty damn good :) I liked the way he handled Ryan's negative attitude and the game in general. Keep up the good work, Matt!

Matt, good job. Ryan was quite hard on you with this one but you still made it interesting ^^ Looking forward to more good and odd J-RPG:s, there are too many to choose from. I think I need to try this.

The only bad thing about Kessler is that when he's on deck, you know it's about as JRPG a JRPG as JRPGs get.

They should put him in a quick look of an actual game, that might help.

What I love is how Matt's voice reminds me of one of the Carmine brothers from Gears, lol.

Kessler is the shit. More Kessler, less cut-and-paste JRPG's.

I completely agree. The guy is showing some improvement. These are not as easy to do as they may seem.

A shooter can really only vary so much. Most of which has to do with the perspective (first or third person). RPGs on the other hand can/should vary quite a bit. But most JRPGs being made today are almost identical to JRPGs that were made ten years ago.

My only problems with Kessler were that he always sounded a little too enthusiastic and a little too eager to please. He certainly seems like a nice man, and I don't fault him for anything. I just feel like his personality was a little out of place among the usual Giant Bomb crew, and maybe he needed to relax and slow down a bit. (Also, Ryan really can be super snippy and impatient sometimes. Not a good co-host for one of Matt's JRPG Quick Looks.)

Oh, actually, I will fault Matt for his spastic camerawork. Dude can't handle a video camera to save his life. <3

Kessler should come back!  This guy -made- this Quick Look.  He's got enthusiasm and almost a child-like sense of wonder.  It's refreshing nowadays.

More Kessler! :D

Hm. Realized Kessler is the only intern ever that did a quicklook.  That's pretty cool Kessler!  You must be doing something right!

This is the only QL I have ever seen, and I've seen them all, that I really didn't like. I understand EO is a very niche series that most people aren't remotely interested in and is very deliberately paced, but that doesn't excuse Kessler's poor preparation for it or Ryan's shitty attitude. I don't mean to go on a huge rant here, but Kessler should have started by creating a party member, showing off the different classes (which is core to the game), then go to a floor he hadn't been to yet and started mapping (showing off the mapping tools). Being kind of jerk is Ryan's thing (and I love him for it), but his demeanor in this was way too negative and uninterested. If you are going to act like that just don't be on the quick look.

Giant Bomb doesn't do quick looks of every game realeased (and they don't need to) and I think they should have passed on this one. If no one was interested in doing it they just shouldn't have done it. Usually, at least, with games they don't like they keep it entertaining and funny. I don't know; whatevs, I guess I'm just a little disappointed.

Late to the party on this one but I have to echo this sentiment, especially given the chorus of "boring, generic RPG's" on this thread. Etrian Odyssey DEFINITELY has a barrier for getting on board.  It ain't everyone's cup of tea, but it gets way more interesting than drawing a couple lines to finish a basicallycompleted map and fighting a bunch of random encounters, that are in fact NOT random, the changing color of the flashing light allows for avoiding monsters if you have a good map and a little luck, ie the monsters are sorta there, doing their thing, you just don't see them directly.

With just a modicum of prep or just a better coordinated QL, what is actually engaging about EO could have been presented, ie getting past several FOE's (which this QL failed to even show, and a fight that would have at least been interesting) on a map as they move 1 to 1 with you or the more meta game of loot drops (which this early in the game might not have been obvious, Matt mentions selling stuff rather than crafting).

Haven't played too many games like EO at least recently. It's not entirely novel, definitely a throwback, but if you are into some old school Wizardry type gameplay it scratches that itch. It definitely is not the standard JRPG. For one, there are few games as punishing as EO out there.

Agreed. The gameplay in EO reminds me of older RPGs like the Ishar saga. Nothing to do with JRPGs. I remember drawing maps of the dungeons with a pen and paper!

Exactly. But this QL didn't do this game any favors.

Kessler had a certain feigned enthusiasm on this. Ryan's demeanor exaggerated it even more.

When Patrick did that recent QL of the sequel to this game, Ryan acted way more interested and like he'd never seen the game before. Matt is way more entertaining in this QL, to be honest.
