Quick Look: EX: Need for Speed: The Run

Driver 2 of NFS you say? I liked Driver 2 when I was 12 but I can't say that I'm 12 anymore

Most excited I've been for need for speed in a long time. Kinda sad it was the same thing as the trailer.

I'm actually quite looking forward to this game.

So this was a Quicklook EX because the publisher wouldn't agree to a 60+ minute free-form demonstration of their game. And I'm guessing it was this length because the terms of the agreement were "you get 5 minutes of game play and it'll be run by a PR guy". Is that how this works? Not complaining at all, just really curious how the behind the scenes stuff works.

I've not enjoyed a Need for Speed game for a while. Maybe this one? It is nice to see the Frostbite 2.0 engine used for something other than killing.

Quickest quick look ever. Why did the graphics look kind of bad to me? Everything was kind of... grimy. The road textured seemed like big squares at some points. I know it's pre-alpha and all, but some people seem to be impressed with the graphics. NFS: Hot Pursuit looked much better to my eye.

I'm on board with this game. I loved the old Black Box NFS games in the past, and this looks pretty good.

They're either very fast or very crunch-timey. Or it's gonna get delayed.

Not all Quick Look EX's are like this. Check out Catherine for one example of a better one, and then there's Trenched.

Anyone else think this game looks EXACTLY like Hot Pursuit? Just, minus the Pursuit, even though it will have a very Hot Pursuit mechanic I'm sure?

THE GAME IS ONLY AT PRE-ALPHA.

That should be common knowledge by now. Devs rarely show off the latest build, in fact they usually show off quite a few behind where the dev build is, because the build they are on in the studio is still being worked on so it's buggy, missing features (often the presentation aspects of the game, which are what are important in showing the press and public).

I like long looks :(

Mention the out-of-car sequences, watch one short race, we're not talking about the cars at the moment, using Frostbite engine PEACE OUT!

Don't get me wrong, content is content but there really wasn't anything conveyed that couldn't have been a write up and some screenshots. Nothing was "oh, you need to see this in action".

In general, I don't like Quick Look EX videos as much as regular Quick Looks. With someone from the game's developer/publisher sitting right there, I think the guys can't verbalize some of their less favorable observations like they would otherwise. No fault to them, of course, it just means they aren't total jerkwads.

That was a quick look.

I like the setting of having you move across the country. In theory it could really give you a sense of progression missing in a lot of racing games.

I am curious just how much skipping around they will be doing though. I doubt racers will be covering every mile of road from one side of the country to the other.

So does EX mean "with guests ?
