Quick Look: Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster

It's like Persona 4 without the fun, humour and good characters.

Despite being very narrow in terms of freedom, this was the last acceptable Final Fantasy game.

And really the last good Squaresoft/Enix game.

Yeah, I like it when rpgs have classes: warrior, thief, mage, healer. When they just make all the characters blank states that you have to build your own classes around, I feel it just sucks away some the character's individual personality.

Wow, this is the first time I've actually seen footage of FFX-2, and it's so cringeworthy, I can barely watch it. Holy crap.

X is my favourite without the nostalgia of VII. Really worth buying for that alone.

I love Final Fantasy X-2, it's one of my favorite Final Fantasy games. No sarcasm. I wish more of the series was like that and didn't take itself so seriously, instead of all this constant brooding and crying over every little thing. It's basically the closest thing I'm going to get to a Jem And The Holograms video game, so pretty awesome in my book.

Phantom Lancer is based on the blue cat dude from FFX.

Thanks Matt for giving us a look at this. I'm actually tempted now to get this and play through it again. It happens to be one of my favorite stories in any Final Fantasy game, and it's been long enough now that the majority of the story has been forgotten to me.

For you duders that have played this recently, about how much time, minimally, will be required to play through this?

Also, I'm with Vinny in that FFIX tends to be my favorite, much more so than FFVII and FFVIII.

Final Fantasy is really dumb.

I'm definitely with Vinny on this. FF8 & 10 were just not my thing. I've always wanted to go back and finish FF10 so that I could say I've finished the first 10 games in the Final Fantasy series... but... man, Tidus.

In terms of war profiteering, you can blame the Conrad Verner's of the world trading on your good name leaving the helpful shopkeepers out to dry. Plus, "trust me the WORLD IS GOING TO END!" has never helped me get a discount at Best Buy.

It's hilarious how much they casually summarize nearly the entire plot of the game over the course of this quicklook.

FFX is still one of my favorites though; it felt like the last FF made with passion rather than business.

Edit: I think a good decade later, I might finally be able to appreciate how dumb X-2 is.

I'm with you on that. X-2 is by far my favorite FF game and it's due in largely in part to that very thing you mentioned. I mean...15 looks all cool and shit, but after the 13 trilogy, I would punch a puppy in the face for another shot at a mainline Final Fantasy game that didn't spend so much time up it's own ass.

Also, +1 for mentioning Jem and the Holograms. Never forget.

FF8 and FFX-2 are pure shit!

Jem and the Holograms... might be one of better comparisons I've seen for FFX-2. Though I feel my enjoyment of it is partially ironic in nature. It's goofy, lighthearted and sometimes borders on self-parody with how duuuuuumb it gets. Combat isn't half bad though.

I wanted a JRPG for my PS2 so I just bought FF9. I think I made the best choice.

sorry but Final Fantasy stopped being cool after VI on the SNES. I just can't play JRPG's anymore.. especially in a world that has Elder Scrolls and Dark Souls.

I ordered the Vita tape for this, but haven't gotten it yet. Disappointed to hear both games aren't on there, since the Vita memory cards are so laughably small (the 64 GB one still isn't available in the EU) I was hoping I wouldn't have to download anything but the occasional patch, not the entirety of one of the games.

@pimblycharles: I wanna say 30- 40 hours roughly. That's the around the time I remember clocking the game at when I finished it about a decade ago :P

As someone who's never played either of these games, that X to X-2 transition still made my head hurt. I mean, I enjoyed Bayonetta as much as anyone-- but man, what a baffling way to enrage your fans.

Maybe they had a bet going with Kojima.

I still think these games are garbage. I'm insulted by the storytelling and the shitty voice acting. I've revisted them again for fairness sake but you guys have your fun I'll never hop on that train.

I think people remember X-2 being crazier than it actually is. After the opening parts of the game it settles into a pretty typical (if a little more lighthearted) FF story with your threat to the world etc. The pop star stuff is really barely even in the game outside the first hour.

My 130 hours save in the PS2 version disagree with you. I don't think there is a FF game that I have enoyed more to level up (sphere grid) and fight epic bosses. In FF7 I could defeat ruby and Emeral weapon and do all there was to do in about 50 hours but in FFX (EU aka international version) there are so many bosses like the dark aeons and such tht even after 130 hours I still had more to do.

My goal is to platinum the game but I am now 28 and not 16 like I was then so I don't have as much time.

The combat system is only the best in any FF game. The system where some fiends need magic to defeat, some piercing, some speed etc made it a lot more interesting than earlier FF games where magic was useless and all you ever needed was to hold the attack botton. I never even used magic in FF7 and 8 after the first couple of hours since there is no need to

Not saying X is my favorite because VII is and forever will be my first love when it comes to FF but it is top three.
