As a fan of Metal, Patrick totally seems like the kind of person who would hear it and call it "butt rock". Also, I'm SURE this quick look will go a long way towards bucking the trend of Patrick hate. Keep on keepin on Scoops!

EDIT: Holy shit, looked up the guys behind this music, their other stuff is pretty great too. Machirae Supremacy on YouTube for those with the proper tastes.

If you go on to their actual website they have a gazillion(not really, but a lot) of songs of theirs that are free.
Including game Medleys!

The metal soundtrack is by far the best part of this game. Seriously, that music is awesome.

And what is butt rock? Is it some genre of music that I'm not familiar with?

it's what assholes call anything they think sounds remotely like 80's hair metal.

I am in agreement with you that the metal sister is the best sister.

Oh. Well, I initially thought it was like an actual genre of music I didn't know about... If Patrick doesn't like the metal, that's cool. It's just, like, his opinion man.

What really gets me about this game is that this draws on those childhood memories of both sonic and mario, I personally think that the blond sister is very mario with the float jump and more devily world ala mario castles and the red head is very sonic with the dash move, quick movement and green hill zone type environment.

not saying thats the way it was designed but thats what comes to my mind when i see the way it plays

I'm a fan of metal and the punky sister's music is 100% what I'd call 'cock rock' any day of the week. I don't know what usually passes for butt rock but I'm fine with associating this rock with any crude part of the body, especially a part of the body that gets hurt easily after exposure to mild negativity. The added flavour of the other sister's synth interludes makes it prog rock, which is not much better.

Having said that, it's really fitting for the character and atmosphere of the game. Not quite enough to make me buy it, but nearly.

Wow, this looks surprisingly interesting. It's ironic that current Giana Sisters games are now more inventive than current Super Mario Bros games are.

I don't think "butt" rock is a term that anyone uses. Was Patrick trying to be "PC" and avoid using the term "Cock Rock"?

Also, didn't you guys get your fill of Patrick hate during the livestream? He misused a term, not killed a puppy.

Cock Rock is basically 80's hair metal and Butt Rock is essentially 90's grunge metal. Either way, it's the wrong term for the music in the game. The music is closer to an 80's style though, being Power Metal and all.

Looks infinitely better than the DS version, which I just got. It's a solid platformer but it doesn't *do* anything. This looks like it could.

Really like the idea of having 2 characters you can swap between (with different abilities) on the fly like that. Are there many others? The only ones I know of are the trine games

I've been playing the game for a little bit. I don't think it's all that good, but it's okay. The gem collecting mechanic is pretty lame and the music's kinda bad and the graphics are overdone, but it's not terrible.

Thanks for clearing that up. I had the same thought as , having never heard the "butt rock" term. But yes, knowing that now, it's definitely not the right description.

Okay, I feel better about his (mis)use of the term now, it was really bothering me. I had no idea it was a thing people said. In my experience people using the term Cock Rock just use it to describe anything with squealing guitars (since they're being derogitory and don't care about using proper genre terms anyway).

As for people complaining about the amount of times Patrick dies in this Quick Look, that speaks to me more about the game's controls and physics than Patrick's skill level. I'd also imagine it's easy to forget you can switch between sisters for a moment, and elements like faded platforms that filled in upon switching weren't really clear to me until after they'd actually materialised.

It's kinda sad when the game that essentially ripped off Super Mario Bros. is now more inspired than the game it was emulating.

I understood exactly what he was saying. Never heard of "cock rock." Maybe there is a regional difference or something in the usage of those words.

On an unrelated note, this game looks kind of like junk. "You could certainly do worse" is about the best endorsement Patrick could give it.

Man, frustrating watch. The way Ryan keeps trying to get Patrick to bounce off of everything implies that he just doesn't understand what he's seeing and how the mechanics work. It's pretty straightforward guy.

It seems odd to me that Patrick pointed out every few minutes that things changed in the levels when you switched sisters. He explained it once, early on, and showed what he was talking about. It's like he was either forgetting he'd mentioned it, thought everyone else might forget if he didn't keep bringing it up, or was concerned that people wouldn't believe him if he didn't call attention to it repeatedly.

He also took awhile to describe the fact that the game had optional areas; and spoke of it like it was something interesting and new.

And why is it weird that the game exists? Because it was a Kickstarter game? That's all that they mention with relation to its existence being weird, and it really comes across as them grasping at straws. As does knocking the music.

In world 1 of the game...here's my thoughts:

1. Basic platforming control is smooth. AKA it's not Little Big Planet's airy platforming.

2. I'm playing with a 360 controller, and I'm not sure what to think about the form switch....I get why they did it, but by default, X is to do Sonic's homing jump, Y is to do Rayman's float, and RT is to switch form without triggering a jump. Now, there's a reason for the controls to be like this (sometimes you want to switch forms while floating or something), but I just don't like it. Maybe I'll get used to it, but I would have preferred RT to switch forms and double tap A for the special move....it's more complex for no real benefit.

3. Rayman games had it, but as you saw in the QL, you need to collect gems to move on. I don't like it, since the gems serve no other purpose other then CG art. At least in Rayman Origins, the Lums gave you new characters to use. I hate gem hunting.

Game's okay, but it'll be forgotten in 2 weeks, like that furry arcade game.

I'm actually surprised none of them went and said "oh wow, another indie platformer" because if one were to follow that with "funded by Kickstarter" you could instantly write off this game and end the video there.

Patrick's grating desire to use obscure internet and subculture-created terms for actual things unironically in casual conversation aside, the comments suggesting Patrick is becoming the new Brad totally works on multiple levels.

Edit: Also, Giant Bomb should totally just create a yearly GOTY deliberation category called "The Obligatory Indie Platformer of the Year Award" and just finally accept the yearly deluge of random downloadable platformers.
