Quick Look: Guild Wars 2

I get why fans of GW2 may find this QL frustrating, I really do. But you have to understand that this site never intended for this to be another all-informative, neutral standpoint site like Gamespot o IGN. Atleast not in Quick Looks. Sure Brad will shower you with loads of information in a Skyrim QL, that's only natural since he was really into that game. Jeff didn't really like this game, so he gave his hones first impressions in this QL. You don't have to agree with how they run things, but for people like me, it makes it easier for me to draw an overall picture of what this game is like. TLDR: There doesn't seem to be a pro review do's and dont's in QL's, either they're into it, or he're not. It usually becomes pretty obvious within a few minutes.

The game is far from awesome but there's a difference between not liking a game and just spouting misinformation after pre-conception after snide remark when 90% of the things that's presented as "information" in this video is just plain wrong. As just one of the many examples they completely dismiss the overflow feature and when Vinny even asks Jeff about server queues it's clear none of them have even the slightest idea what the overflow is or what an massive leap in MMO technology it actually is. I could go on but it'd be pointing out faults to 90% of the video like I mentioned earlier. This isn't MMO vs. MMO opinions or anything, it's just fault after fault because of utter lack of knowledge.

Basically if you spent hundreds of hours in WOW at any point in your life but didn't find the raiding or questing all that inspired and no other MMO you've tried since then have really improved on that then GW2 is the exception. It's not a revolution like WOW was but it's a much bigger step for MMO's than SWTOR was. If Guild Wars 2 was released in 2004 but with just a bit worse graphics (if could've been done just the genre hadn't evolved game-play wise this far) I have no doubt whatsoever it'd been the de facto MMO this past decade instead of WOW.

The video might have some misinformation, but you offer no information. What is the overflow system? How is it revolutionary? If there is misinformation you are free to clarify. This game is warhammer online in many ways, not a step forward, it is very iterative. There are great ideas in the game, but it feels uninspired and lack soul, it's bland. You like the game because it is new, give yourself 1 month and you'll see what Jeff is foreseeing.

How do you not know what overflow is and still have the ability to claim it is bland. OH right Jeff said he did not like it so i bet it is like that. There is very few ways you would not know what overflow is if you put some time and effort into the game.

I am not calling the overflow system bland, I am calling the gameplay bland and uninspired. How could I call a network queuing system bland?

I hope you guys realize you are arguing over the importance of server side player management. I hope you guys can find something better to do with your time.

Quick looks are all fun and games until they say something bad about a game you like.

Kinda wish I watched this QL before I went ahead and bought this.

Uh, well... I think it was a nice enough QL and showed some things about the game that is traditional to the genre and some new things. I do agree with Vinny in that there's to be some new innovative thing to create ground textures and alpha mapped foliage.

I'll... leave it at that.

Its not his job to sell anything its to give his personal opinion about games and if you disagree with that opinion then just don't listen to him, simple as that... and that's to everybody in these comments that gets all up in arms because somebody didn't say the most positive things about a game you like. Relax and realize its not a big deal... not trying to start anything I'm just sayin.

Whatever content they added to GW1, and however huge you think it was, It definitely wasn't as significant as the kind of updates that a game like WoW has received over the years.

That's cool and all but that was GW1. How about we wait and see how things play out in GW2. For WoW you better have gotten a "significant" update for paying a monthly fee to get them after 3-4 months of wait time if not more.

Unless you happen to run the company and already know how it's going to play out, you should put down your fanboi banner and relax. WoW is not going anywhere and you can go right back to playing it.

@Dark_Lord_Spam: Thank you for making this post. I was about to write a novel about my issues with the QL (don't flame me, I liked the video a lot and I think they did a good job mostly, just a few things I wanted to point out considering how much I'm loving this game. And no, I'm not a GW1 fanboy) but you pretty much covered everything!

This game is absolutely can't miss if you like MMOs, possibly the best game of this type I've ever played. If you like RPGs, I still say you might want to give it a shot, it's a bit dense for those completely new to the MMO genre, but a good first step and the community is generally pretty helpful.

I can definitely see how Jeff would be turned off by it, in my opinion the Norn area is the worst of the five, plus the game gets better as you play. That said, it won't click with everyone, which is understandable. Still, it's on my shortlist for GOTY...

@Dark_Lord_Spam: I love the first game as well, but I can't really call myself a superfan. I played through about 70% of the Tyria campaign and half of the Factions and Nightfall campaigns. It got a wee bit stale for me and at the time I had no interest in PvP, I have a feeling I'll be in to GW2 for a while though. It has enough variety to stay fresh.

What does it lack that other mmo's have to make up for the game not having a monthly fee? Customer support. I purchased the game the day after it came out and had my account stolen within the first week (partially due to the fact that all you get as far as security options with this game is the ability to change your password) and I have yet to have my account returned to me.

It has been over a full week (8 days) since I issued my ticket to support.

Too bad, too. The game was giving me one hell of a good first impression.

Wow. I was actually going to buy this due to positive word of mouth but actually seeing it in action it looks really bad. Thanks for saving me some cash.

@hatp: Not at all actually. The things you can buy are for stupidities like a flute to play notes, skins for your town clothe, etc
