Quick Look: Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance

Man KH 1 2 and Chain of Memories were fun now they are adding Pokemon and forcing you to switch between Sora and Riku. Dosen't look so fun. Why can't they just make KH3?

I absolutely loved Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2. The first one came out when I was 10, and the second when I was 13. Now I'm 20, and I have absolutely no idea what happened to this series. I just want new disney worlds and a less convoluted story now!

im all for criticism , but one has to at least study the thing you criticize a bit harder , .. i dont know any other short review medium that judges books based on their covers as much as quick looks do.. it seems a bit crass ..

and thought i acknowledge its entirely up to them what they do in their videos.. I do think I'm still entitled to criticize Brad and Ryan etc, because i have studied them extensively for years eheh.

If you haven't already realized it by now, you should know that it is common for Brad to always skip cutscenes and power through most dialog ignoring any and all text that is common in introducing the player to the game's story and how to play it in general, for games he is not really interested in playing. The problem is, if the Quick Look is about a game he doesn't really want to play; he will just skip through everything and that ends up being clueless if it is a heavy story driven game with somewhat unique mechanics. It is not his fault, we are all guilty of this. However most of us choose to buy our games. He has to power through many many games and most of them he most likely doesn't like. His job is to play these games and review them, so he has a lot of games he has to get through. Which leads to less opportunity to be able to take the time to enjoy them, maybe. The quick looks on the games that Brad actually has an interest in are really great, he really brings some interesting insight into them and you can tell he enjoys them. I know this is his job to do this, but I think most people wouldn't be all to excited to demo a game for which they have no interest in. Just giving the benefit of the doubt.

Not sure about anyone else but I DON'T want to watch or listen to cutscenes in a quicklook, I want to see the game in action. All that other discussion you are blabbing on about doesn't matter, these are just to quickly show a game, it's not to dig into the depths of it, hence "quick look".

@UltimAXE: I think it's unfair to categorize this as a "waste of time." I'm sure there's an group (probably a sizable one) of people that haven't played Kingdom Hearts before, own a 3DS, and want something to play on it. This is the perspective that they're coming at this game with, essentially, so Brad saying "The combat is cool, though there's a lot of it, and the music is great and the production is great but damn, this story is nonsense" is probably going to describe the experience for a first-time-KH player pretty well. And it also isn't a waste of time for you because hey! You're a kingdom hearts fan! You watched the video! It's kingdom hearts! Now you should know whether or not you're interested. Maybe you view it as a waste of time because you've already made up your mind?

I really enjoyed the first game on the PS2... they need to re-release 1 and 2 as an HD collection and make a number 3 on a proper platform.

Bred doesn't really come across as if he likes video games. He seemed to be more into the AR card than the entirety of the video game he's playing.

As someone who has never played one of these games, but does own a 3DS and likes to keep up on new titles, this is perfect for me. I can see what the basic gameplay is like and decide that it's not for me. Which incidentally is what I've done. The point of the QL isn't to give you the entire story and every minute detail from the game, it's more like trying something out for a few minutes in a store.

After going through the Kingdom Hearts wikia i don't think i care for what Kingdom Hearts 3 will most likely become, and not playing the portable games seems like its going to be a bigger hindrance than Chains of Memories was. But I can be wrong a Square could do it right.

Metro City AKA Travers Town

As far as I'm concerned Kingdom Hearts 2 is a classic. The combat especially is so, so much more exciting and makes the game a constant blast. There's equal helpings of seriousness, whimsy, square and disney (unintentional rhyming) and I go back to my endgame save every year to battle sephiroth and just enjoy the last great game in the series.

If they ever make a Kingdom Hearts 3 they have to look back at KH2 and see the mistakes they've made along the way, because the modern kingdom hearts games are really souring me on one of many people's all time favourites.

Every single game looks the same, I'm not saying that's necessarily a bad thing, just an observation. Also I should say that I used to be a huge fan of Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, but I must have changed cause I don't care for them anymore.

God damn, that first game was brilliant. I'm kind of bummed out about the overarching KH mythos pushing the Disney stuff to the sidelines, though. I don't give a shit about Organization XIII. I want lighthearted anime bullshit surrounded by Disney nostalgia.

 I wish they stopped at Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2.  I finished those two games last week and I really dont want to get into the stupid/twister story of those handheld games.  

Do Ryan and Brad not recognize characters from Square's best game, The World Ends With You? This World is all about Square fanservice!

But yeah, I don't blame them for not liking this game. I bought into KH early and have played almost every installment, and read up on the ones I've missed. This is tantamount to jumping into a story driven game on its seventh or eight installment - so it's natural they'd be put off. If you're up to reading walls of text, they DO provide "Chronicles" as you progress through the story that give you the full story of the other installments.

I care

Brad is my favorite quick look pilot because he plays games like me. He gives however many fucks the game compels him to give from moment to moment, and enrages people who demand that maximum fucks be given at all times.

Played about 3 hours so far and... I just don't know WHAT the fuck is going on. I have played most of the KH games to completion but I just don't even know anymore. Gameplay is still Kingdom Hearts with some other things thrown in to spice it up.

This game is a damn crappy fan service. I loved KH1 & 2, but now I couldn´t care less.

BTW Brad Shoemaker, the key on the door show you where you came from.. you know.. like Zelda.

God, I hate when they hint at pertinent conversations that we will never get to hear. I wish there was a constant office cam, despite my better judgement of knowing that that would be totally creepy, and probably illegal.

For me, it depends on how legit they are. The Etrian Odyssey QL comes to mind on that one. Surprise a 100+ hour game has a lot going on, certain criticisms are simply not valid if you just want to jump into it.

I don't think Square knows what they are doing with Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy anymore.  It's like they made it to Final Fantasy 10 and Kingdom Hears 2, then suddenly forgot why people liked both series.
 
Here is a hint guys.  It isn't dumb sequels or spin offs on handhelds.  It isn't half a decade between games.

I was watching the video while reading comments and I freaked out a little by the surprising lack of anger at the guys not recognizing TWEWY characters until they did and I understood why all the fanboyish hate was just standard "Brad plays games wrong" nonsense.

How is a stand-alone release of a game that costs 40 bucks to purchase and presumably is trying to sell copies to people now assumed to be unintelligible to anybody who hasn't played 4 games that both come before it and are largely unavailable or for last generation systems? What sort of twisted set of assumptions and self-defeating design is that?

Even TV series will recap from time to time and try to provide some closure and arc to each season. Releasing a videogame every two or three years and expecting everyone to be up to speed with what's going on without some help is probably not a good idea.

And hey, whether or not it's true that you haven't played any KH before, I can say this: The series has become less, not more, than a cross company mashup. Hell, I played the first game and just trying to make sense of the first portable version, which was ostensibly a retread of the game I had already played, made no sense from a story perspective.

For what it's worth, I do think this thing looks nice, and it seems like it plays good enough, but man, when the guys say that this series is way too self-centered, they are spot-on. And yeah, I agree with you, there seems to be a lot of superfluous fighting. I miss the more serene, exploration-driven gameplay of the first game. And the story. And the look of things. And everything else, really.

As someone who hasn't played a KH game since 2, this looks alright to me. I just wouldn't want to jump in without knowing if I should try the other handheld games first.

I am reminded at how terrible Kingdom Hearts games have been since Kingdom Hearts 1. Don't know how or why they lost me, exactly, but I'm happy there are fans who are enjoying it.

Never played TWEWY but I should probably try it out. I have no idea if the enemies in this game are from TWEWY or not, but I think they look really dumb. I much more enjoyed the heartless and nobodies.

this actually looks pretty fun, but i haven't played a KH game since the first one. Hesitant to even pick it up even though I kind of want something to play on my 3DS since i haven't used it since the first week or so since i got it over a year ago. Kinda wondering if @Brad has played anymore and likes it anymore or less and if there are any thing in the game that fills you in on anything from the past games.

@Brad @Ryan Before you guys go to do anything with KH3 in the future when it comes out, please just go to Wikipedia and read the very brief summary on the story of Kingdom Hearts to at least have some idea of what's going on. It's in chronological order, too.

I don't entirely get the alienation people are feeling about the franchise. This game is my first one in the series and I've had no trouble taking to it like a (donald) duck to water. The Disney roster is scraping the barrel somewhat, some Mickey Mouse Musketeers TV movie isn't the best choice for one of your 5 Disney worlds in this game. TWEWY and The Hunchback of Notre Dame is definitely the nostalgia hooks that got me interested in the game. The combat is easy, but fun, highly customisible with a good number of options, and the pokemon system is robust and addictive. The story is vapid light and dark nonsense, but is fairly ignorable. If you care to piece it together they give you plot summaries of the previous games as you progress.

Some of the criticisms definitely stand. The worlds do seem empty, without any NPCs outside of cutscenes, If people are not at peace with yaoi and the fandom, it could definitely put you off, although that can seem like quite a sexist or xenophobic perspective. The story is up it's own ass, but if you come for the nostalgia in the first place, then stay for the nostalgia and ignore the original story...
