Quick Look: Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (PC)

I'm glad Vinny and Brad are finally on board with Revengeance. I'm looking forward to their thoughts on the Bombcast.

I really want to go fight those bosses again after watching this, was there a boss rush mode or anything in the menus? That would nicely scratch my itch if it was there.

The thing about the soundtrack is that it doesn't work as well outside the game, but actually in the game, when it's building up, it's awesome. And after you've heard it in the game the stand alone album will probably work better.

Yup. They balanced out normal to be the setting for MGS fans who are more into the story. You can mostly just mash through. Hard is where it forces you to actually understand the mechanics and play well to progress.

@jonny_anonymous: Y'know I seem to remember an option in the game to change it to white but it defaults to red.

RULES OF NATURE! The soundtrack is actually pretty amazing. All of the bosses have the vocals kick in during their final phase and it's always the hypest thing.

and I hate being that guy, but the Prime Ministers usefulness and Sam's flaming sword are pretty obvious.

It's about mood, not actual good songs. The songs are terrible. But they're perfect for a game called REVENGEANCE.

And yet, later on in the game when you do get to beat that guy the player relies on basically the same strategies and controller input as s/he used when the guy was invincible. It's just entirely unconvincing; especially when you're playing the game a second time or when you're thoroughly familiar with the genre.

I'd rather play a character action game with the real Raiden.

I like all sorts of games... but the crazyness of Japanese games is juuuuust a little better, in my opinion.

@thecheese33: Post from Konami on forums confirms it's a bug, and that they are working on that bug first, before all the resolution mess with ATI cards. Seems starting it through the .exe file fixes the online stuff temporarily, but I don't have that bug so that's just from word of mouth.

Also, totally disagree with Jeff that this game gets easy. Kick up the difficulty and the parry window gets cut in half, there's blade mode cancels and light attack for infinite combos, some enemies power up when you kill one of them making their attacks way harder to counter etc. So yeah, you can mash your way through medium and most of hard difficulty, but to get all the secret stuff, you need to go in new game + at harder difficulty and get s ranks on every fight. That requires cutting limbs off enemies for ekstra bp, not getting hit while also getting timed in the background. Making that optional and rewarded helps with the difficulty curve, instead of just spiking it as soon as the game starts.

And the guitar riffs gets waaay better, moonsoon fight shreds HARD!

I am sooo glad Jeff is giving this game the respect it deserves.
I didn't even think he would like this style of game at all but dam he proved me wrong.

And the lyrics is basically backstory for the bosses, talking about how they feel and stuff. I like to believe every boss have speakers on them blasting this terribly fantastic metal, and they're singing to you at the end. It's......it's beautiful, man.

Yup, if you're looking for stuff for metal gear or platinum combat systems, chip has got you covered. Played through this game twice earlier this year before I learned about blade cancelling, shit blew my mind :p

Seriously it's a shame this wasn't even brought up for best music in 2013. It just fits so well and is so perfect with what's happening and the bosses and it's just terrific.

In that case I am absolutely awful at this game because I could not get past the robo-dog boss last night on normal. I will probably restart on easy, ugggh. But yeah, this game looks amazing!

Been waiting on this since i watched two best friends play it on PS3, bought it on PC soon as it was avaialble, can't stop giggling when i do a zandatsu kill and hearing matt go "nanomachines"

If you recall, they all universally liked Bayonetta and the new DMC quite a lot.

I'm put off by a lot of Japanese games, but when Platinum does crazy...they do it fucking righteous. I love their style.

i havent played any mgs since ps1 but hearing the bomb squad talk about how crazy it got, makes me want to, but i only have a pc, im holding out? for the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection to come to pc

Still disappointed by how "not crazy" this game was. Bayonetta and Asura's Wrath shit on this game in terms of bonkers nonsense.

@jeff The reason why the game does the weird checkpoint loading thing is because of how incredibly resource intensive the game was on consoles. The way the game is constantly bisecting objects forces them to keep the memory buffer nearly full all the time so doing something as benign as changing an outfit or buying new moves requires a reload of the game because there's no room to make those relatively minor tweaks.

It's the same reason why they don't let you fast-swap weapons like in Bayonetta or DMC; all the little parts of dudes being chopped up means that they use the process of opening the menu to clear out all those physics objects so the game doesn't utterly shit the bed. It's a shame they couldn't fix those things on PC, but that would required such a fundamental reconstruction of the engine that it's not really feasible.

yeah - this game is great...it's nostalgia in a fresh coat of paint.

God, I love when they drop all the settings to the lowest possible on PC games. It's like what I'd have to run the game at if I were to play it on my current machine!

It was white in MGS4 because he was using an older synthetic blood which was supplied by Drago Pettrovich Madnar when he was working for the Patriots. But it's more rare than modern cyborg blood so i'm guessing somewhere between 4 and Rising he switched it for the new stuff. ;p

And yeah Rising's great. Those that dismissed it for being just another character action game need to be a bit more open minded.
