@billyok: @sor_eddie: I stand corrected! Thank you for the information.

You're very welcome.

I think it brings up a larger point, too -- that while LGBT is more than just sex and ogling pretty people, both of those things are a wonderful part of being alive no matter how you identify yourself. More serious discussion of this stuff is definitely essential, but good-intentioned silliness is just as valuable sometimes. Hopefully one day we can all just laugh at one another's mannerisms as equals. Time will tell.

@billyok: I agree! And I should add that there isn't really anything about this that I find offensive, it's just not something I feel especially inclined to play. I dunno if my comments seemed harsh enough to imply that I was offended or anything.

This doesn't seem that bad. It at least stays away from Leisure Suit Larry levels of terrible sex jokes.

@amafi: @bbalpert: My problem with the game isn't that it's just a bunch of dumb sex jokes, it's that it's gay themed only as a means for sex jokes. There's more to being LGBT than sex and ogling hunky guys (not that I'm saying anything against ogling hunky guys).

I know, but I figured that "maybe it's trying to be an all-dude Leisure Suit Larry...?" would be the best (or least bad) rationale behind this game being made.

That's very much the vibe I got. Larry with less tits and somehow less wit and charm. And I guess not the same focus on getting the protagonist laid, which is all there is to the larry games.

The first thing I have to ask about this is - why does everything in "mainstream" media involving male homosexuality include the most musculature "masculine" male bodies?

Where this seems meant to be an inclusive game, I still just find it kind of offensive on the level of a dumb PS2 era GTA game.

I love adventure games, but when you have to travel back and forth between scenes with a tedious walking animation really makes me hate playing them. I appreciate that not everyone loves the walking dead games, but at least they feel to me like I'm playing a well edited game with most of the tedium cut out.

wow, this seems terrible. These Steam games GBeast have been looking at lately are something else..

Most of them have them have seemed interesting and promising and they make for better quick looks than generic console sequels.

@spunkyhepanda: If you can't afford great voice actors, voice direction, or sound design, perhaps you should not make a game that is almost entirely dialogue driven. This game seems extremely tedious and boring. I like the art style and the writing is decent, but there's very little sense of atmosphere or immersion in this world.

If this game needs voice over, i could see Nathan Fillion playing the main character.

I'm in the club of those sorely disappointed that James Vega was not available for a MaleShep romance in ME3, what an amazing punch in the hetero-normative face of entertainment that would have been. This game is pretty cute though.

For me, I was pretty disappointed that Garrus wasn't available. He'd been through a ton with Shepard, and over the games they grew closer than probably any other two characters in the franchise. A romance growing out of this would've been natural and touching- As evidenced in how it developed with the female Shep.

But as much as Bioware tried to appeal to the gay community, they never seemed to understand that subtlety. The gay romances they presented felt like two characters that just saw each and stuck together like magnets, with little tension or doubt or development. Compared to the straight romances available, they just felt incredibly hollow, and on some level that was more disappointing than not having them at all.

Then they probably could have done more to make the game feel engaging without the need for voice acting. I think the original Monkey Island still plays, and I've definitely gotten deep into the stories of more recent text-heavy stuff like Ace Attorney and 999.

@landhawk: Making a character bisexual for the sake of being bisexual is not a good idea.

Garrus wasn't "bisexual" (or whatever) for a reason. His character just isn't like that. And there's nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with certain characters in ME being only gay or only straight. We shouldn't wish a character to be a certain way or harp on developers for making characters "another" certain way.

I feel like if this game was all scantily clad women with the same jokes, there'd be some articles talking about how it was some misogynistic rape simulator or something.

This. If it was flipped to be lesbians there'd be such a uproar, but since it's only stereotypical gay men, no one cares.

It's just camp. Camp isn't bad, but it's pretty polarizing. I fall in the "not really a fan" group.

But I definitely wouldn't say I find any of this offensive. It's just silly.

Oh come on. This is lazy. This is the gay themed game i would have made in 7th grade. All the worst stereotypes present and accounted for.....

Im curious what our gay friends think about it, though.

I'm bi and think this game is just good stupid fun. Not everything has to be a whole serious business social education device. We're well past that now. It's okay to have gay games that are intentionally and exuberantly dumb.

Where the white women??

I've never seen West World, just described to me uncountable times. This also reminds me of the humor of Flesh Gordon.

You know it is interesting to see objectification turned on it's head to me. I kind of see a point,... kind of.

Since they mentioned Fifth Element references, I wonder if Will Scarlett is a reference to Robin Hood: Men In Tights.

Will Scarlett is actually from Robin Hood proper. He was played by Christian Slater in Prince of Thieves. The Men in Tights character was Will Scarlett O'hara (from Georgia).

It may not be an official Starfleet designation, but it is certainly based on naval history and traditions. Traditionally, the person who commands the ship is the Captain, and the officers immediately below them held the rank of Lieutenant or Commander (never Captain, as there can only ever be ONE Captain of the ship). The Lieutenants were ranked according to their seniority/ability/etc. in order from 1st Lieutenant through to 3rd or 4th Lieutenant, as needed. Thus, the second in command of the ship was the First Officer. This is still the case today, though they are frequently referred to as the Executive Officer or XO for short.

~ nitpick of the nitpick complete, I will now scurry off. ;]

The biggest thing to remember here is that this was made by a gay person. Normally games made about scantily clad women are made by men, for little boys, and does little to characterise/humanise the women in the game in any way. Those games were made because of problematic views about women and the same isn't really true for this game.

If a game was made that featured sexy women as well as men, while giving agency to both and not treating women like a reward, then nobody would be complaining. Nobody complains about those games just because the women aren't wearing much.

i'd argue it is because games should be more representational of reality if they really want to strive for that. if sexuality is one of the themes in a game, the game should try its best to cover all areas of that theme

..None of which are made anymore the past decade, and these games are often reviled in recent articles/podcasts for being outdated and sexist..

I've always found that people dismiss the Leisure Suit Larry games too quickly as some kind of 'pubescent sex game'. It's cheeky, but I think the humor and actual game part was what made it pretty good.
