They're better off without Jeff on this one. I can't imagine Jeff would have anything positive to say about it.

This looks boring. Theres very little "re-mixing" going on. It's like they only went halfway with the product. If you are going to put something out like this, why not go all the way and make it crazy?

I completely agree with this. As much as I respect Jeff and his opinions, and I really do: I wouldn't be on this site if it wasn't for Jeff and Ryan, I do think he can get a bit too jaded at times and I feel like it has gotten worse over the years.

@castiel: Though in the case of the NES Remix stuff, he is totally right. They are half assed ROM hacks.

Also, Brad can't play games. Seriously though it does amuse me how he screws up multiple times in a challenge and then legitimately is surprised/bummed he didn't get 3 stars.

Nintendo is like Disney in that practically all they do is exploit nostalgia - except they don't do it nearly as competently.

I feel like these are never crazy enough. Shouldn't the whole game be the NES mash-ups where you try to guess which games they're using instead of "perform this basic gameplay objective?" Sure, if you want to introduce people who never had an NES I guess. But I feel like the only people who would be interested in this are those who already know what these games are about.

Also I found Kirby's Adventure to be pretty rad. I played that game way way after it came out. I still have real trouble withstanding OG NES Metroid. That level design is pretty terrible. So many similar looking rooms that aren't interesting at all. Although, to be fair, that's probably because I played Super Metroid first. But Kirby's Adventure? Still great I find.

Kinda crazy Brad hadn't played Kirby's Adventure, it's a pretty good game (and I think it's one of the better controlling games in this package, despite what was said).

I'm pretty sure on the parasol challenge you were just supposed to fall with the parasol, rather than tapping Up to go into float/jump Fat Kirby mode (although it's sorta impressive that Brad finished it that way, especially that tiny gap near the bottom). And on the egg-eating challenge, that was just Kirby's Adventure, not remixed with anything (it's one of the mini-games). I think the "remix" was that the screen zoomed in as you went along.

@brad, you play through the game specific challenges in order to LEARN about these games. How they play, what you do, how they feel. THEN you jump into the remixes. The structure exists for a reason. They don't assume everyone has played NES games for years in their childhood which is a good thing. If you don't know how to Kirby, play some Kirby challenges first, get a feel for it.

I like how they slowly teach you the little things and then put a twist on them. Also, using the replay feature helps if you're stuck on how to do things better. Watch someone else rock the challenge.

I competed in the Chicago semifinals of the Nintendo World Championships, so I can say with some level of experience that World Championship mode here isn't the same as the real one was. Super Mario Bros. 3 definitely wasn't part of the competition, in fact it wasn't even out at the time. I remember because all the competitors got to play a pre-release version of SMB3 at the event, I still remember my first time playing SMB3, at a kiosk at the Nintendo World Championships.

Also they had a pre-release Double Dragon 2, which nobody gave a shit about because everyone wanted to play SMB3. My buddy and I beat the entirety of Double Dragon 2 on the show floor, I sometimes wonder if we were the first non-developers in the world to beat that game.

Incidentally, the real Nintendo World Championships was 50 coins in Super Mario Bros., then the first track of Rad Racer, then Tetris until time expired. I was among the top 50 players in the Chicago area, and I had the best qualifying score in my bracket, but little did I know that the best qualifying score sat in the big throne and had his game projected on their giant screen, and so I got super nervous and totally choked in front of about a thousand people. Good times.

Brad: "I never beat this (SMB 1!)" "I've never played this." "I didn't like this."

He's so lukewarm on the absolute golden age of NES. What did he grow up on?!!

Brad said the platforming in Mertoid "feels like garbage." I feel like we should remember that… it'll come in handy in some future discussion.

(ps, I'm not angry or anything, the controls in the original Metroid can be pretty tough to get used to. I just think it's an interesting little dose of perspective when people talk about classic games, and how they compare to more recent games in the same series)

Pretty cool game. I wish they would get waaaay crazier in the actual ROM-hack/remix area of the game. Like seriously glitchy & mixed up insanity.

EDIT: display lag..... I want TVs with direct framebuffer access. Think of the madness. It would be beautiful. Ohh I guess that would bypass end-to-end DRM though so they'll never get built.

Idk, this franchise just seems kinda half-assed to me. Why wouldn't you just license out these games to ROM hackers if you really wanted to make something quirky and amazing? As it is now, it seems to me like a super safe cash-in on people's nostalgia. Also, holy shit, could there be any more stickers?

The constant sterile menu interaction is what makes me not want this. They should've followed the Warioware formula somewhat.

I haven't watched the whole video so I'm not sure if it this comes up, but I wonder if if the latency on the capture equipment or display (and the emulation, for that matter) is the cause of some of Brad's control problems. I have one of the lowest-latency monitors out there, and I spent a bit of time running off the edge of platforms in Super Mario World before I got used to whatever latency the Wii U and my display were adding.

These games are all designed for effectively lagless play, and even in an ideal environment, wireless controllers, emulation, upscaling, display processing, etc. add a non-trivial amount of latency.
