Nintendo definitely took a turn for me awhile ago when they went kid friendly to the extreme. Not being able to skip super easy difficulties is mind numbing. Forced length to a game.

They stopped at 90 coins. At 100 they would have unlocked Zelda.

@professoress: If they did that they couldn't sell the real games on the Virtual Console. Also that would be fun.

This seems more fitting for the 3ds, you know with the bite size challenges.

Retro Game Challenge this is not, but still seems ok. Jeff really needs to find a new hobby though, cause videogames just aren't cutting it anymore.

The real allure here if you like a challenge is going for rainbow stars. It made me think about every jump in 1-1 like I never have before. And yes, it gets crazier and unlocks many more games as you go (they specifically lament the absence of games that ARE in there).

Jeff doesn't think NES Remix is fun. Don't see how this makes him a cynic.

I couldn't agree more. This looks incredibly dull.

From what I've heard, the majority of the game's content is exactly the sort of crazy stuff Jeff is asking for, it just takes a little bit of playing to unlock it.

This definitely looks like old Nintendo games repackaged to appeal to the ADHD generation.

Not that I'm here to tell people they're wrong or anything, but if you clearly don't give a shit about whether or not you 3-star each challenge, then this game likely isn't going to do anything for you.

I bought it while I was watching this. Looks to be a perfect mindless podcast-listening game, which is an itch I need scratching sometimes. I'm in a gun fatigue state again and just want to jump around, ride motorbikes and fly with balloons tied to my back. And Nintendo is there, ready to take my money.

We just picked up a Wii U recently and this has been my favourite thing to play on it so far. Yes, I think it takes a little too long for things to ramp up, for things to get a little more weird and for other games to unlock. However, I think when you get there it becomes more fun. There's also the obsessiveness of three starring each challenge (never mind getting the rainbows).

The simplistic nature is really useful for people who've never played those games before as well. Yes you can mock and joke but the base games are something everyone has had a chance to get to grips with (although I had never played Balloon Fight before). But then you start unlocking Ice Climber, Clu Clu Land, Pinball and Wrecking Crew. Personally I've never played any of those games so getting to grips with the controls in those simplistic beginner challenges are useful to me.

What is apparent though is how crappy some of these games controlled. Mario Bros feels like crap as does Ice Climber, and Golf is freaking hard when you have no idea how far you have left yard-wise and no indication of how far you can hit your clubs.

I think for Jeff to get more enjoyment, he probably would have to grin and bear it through those earlier challenges which sounds like he would not do from the sounds of QL.

I certainly wouldn't want to buy all the games available on the store, so the bite size challenges from each are perfect for me. The lack of friend leaderboards are a major issue with me though as wanting to beat friends' times would be a lot of fun and give a little more replayability.

Yeah, this seems to be lacking that special something. The hook doesn't seem to be there unlike a Rhythm Heaven or Warioware. And that's the kind of competition this game is up against as far as mini-game collections go.

I really cannot see myself watching this video, even though I was excited for it. This is one of my favorite games of last year and I've played it for hours without realizing it. The criticisms just don't make any sense to me. I needed the slow ramp up, because other than Mario and Zelda I don't think I had a good grasp on how any of these games went. Also if you're not getting three stars, you're doing it wrong.

On at least three occasions they got "You unlocked X in Remix II" as a reward, kinda surprised they didn't even seem to notice that, even though it still didn't tell them how to access Remix II.

Looks like a lazy attempt by Nintendo to cash in on their history. I'm completely with Jeff on this one.

The KERRAZY REMIXES consisted of palette swaps, subbing sprites for other sprites, zooming in and out, and ROM save state challenges. Woop dee fucking doo.

If they had gone with a deeper bench of games, and gone full Warioware levels of crazy with the remixes, I'd be on board. This is just too lame. The "final challenge" for Donkey Kong, was to... play a Donkey Kong level. REMIX!

And the promise they were holding out for, was to be able to play as a Link sprite in Donkey Kong. Talk about lowered expectations.

I feel like they should have played more of this before doing the Quick Look. The fact that the stuff they were complaining about not being in the game is actually in the game kinda proves that. By the end it was getting to be kinda neat.

It's not clear to me how much of that stuff is actually in there. GB googled up the exact same example you see in all cases, that of Link in the Donkey Kong game.

Are there other examples or just the one?

While I really enjoyed NES Remix, I agree that they could have done more with it, and included different games. And unless I just haven't unlocked it after a few hours of play, I really wanted an infinite-run mode, where it just keeps giving you challenges. I hope for a sequel/DLC pack that will resolve these.

What NES Remix really did for me, though, was wish that the stamps were account unlocks. With Miiverse seeming to be the big thing Nintendo is planning to hang their hat on, and both Mario 3D World and NES Remix relying on them as some kind of reward, wouldn't it be pretty awesome if you could use them in ANY Miiverse post, and have developers add their own as achievement unlocks? I would LOVE to see that happen.

Yeah, here's the thing about that.

Link can't jump.

Try playing a Donkey Kong stage like that and see how different it is. (Answer: VERY.)
