Quick Look: New Super Luigi U

I played a bunch of this over the weekend, both alone and with some friends, gotta say I really dig it. Initially it felt super awkward to control Luigi after playing so much of the base game, but after adjusting to it, it's a nice change of pace from the rest of the game. The way Luigi's prone to sliding of platforms means it ends up feeling like Super Meat Boy or the 2D Sonic games in places, there's definitely an incentive to keep up your momentum.

The level design is great and I've encountered a ton of easter eggs already, lots of cleverly hidden secrets. Difficulty wise this feels like New Super Mario Bros U: The Lost Levels, it pretty much picks up where the base game left off in terms of difficulty. As someone who's found recent 2D Mario games to be a tad on the easy side, I welcome that

Anyway when it comes down to it, if you liked NSMBU, you'll probably like this. If you played that game and thought it felt a little dry, you'll probably just want to wait for 3D World.

So how much of the difficulty comes from level design and how much comes from Luigi's floaty, awkward movement?

Nabbit doesn't give a fuck about fireballs, or anything else for that matter!

e: Yeah, back to downloading videos and watching them in VLC. This is terrible and also slow, but some ten times faster if I just download it.

Two things:

- You can unlock Mario-physics after beating NSLU once

- Nabbit is intended for inexperienced players. You also get a different ending if you beat the game as him. (Iwata detailed he first part in one of the Nintendo Directs before E3, you guys should watch those, I guess^^)

Bonus thing:

- What they did patch in was the Pro Controller support. You couldn't use the thing at all pre-patch. I agree that it's dumb you can't play regular two-player with a GamePad, though.

Sad it isnt 4 players of them dying over and over again. Also, brad should be Nabbit.

I can't imagine willingly playing this game over the glut of awesome platformers available in other places in 2013.

This looks like a cool little bonus and I like the more difficult levels. That's what made 3D Land so awesome in the second half. But still not enough to get me to buy a Wii U.

Glad they're doing more with the franchise with more than just Mario but this seems strange though to see versus original games. Nabbit while being made of pure grade A nightmare fuel, also seems bugged as hell being quite invincible on many spots.

Is it just me, or does it look like Luigi controls kinda poorly in this? I don't mean the fact that he floats and slides; it looks like he just moves a whole lot more sluggishly than he did in SMB2/Lost Levels and other games that did his movement in a similar way.

The sticking point isn't that he slides, but that they simply took away his traction. Like Jeff mentions, it's like he's on ice all the time, and that's not really how Old Luigi controlled at all. He had trouble stopping or turning around once he'd gotten some momentum, sure, but I don't think he had that much trouble getting up to speed to start with since he was also fast.

Maybe I'm being too picky about it being like older Luigi controls, but the way they did his movement in this just seems less fun and a bit lazy.

I'm having a blast with it!

This multiplayer shit is why Nintendo is doomed. They consistently screw up simple ideas, and we are slowly learning that the bigger ideas aren't much better.

It's depressing how boring this looks.

I really like more of the same when it's something that is enjoyable. Like SMB platforming. Also, You guys are friggin' crazy. Luigi is the MVP character of Super Mario Bros. 2.
