Quick Look: OlliOlli 2: Welcome to OlliWood

OlliOlli 2 goes out of its way to show that even though it's been more than a decade since Pro Skater 3, I still don't really know what a revert is.

Sit back and enjoy as the Giant Bomb team takes an unedited look at the latest video games.

I don't know if it's my TV, although I know that it's a fairly low input latency model of a Sony Bravia, or if it's the game itself, but I feel like a lot of the time my inputs just don't register when they should or correctly. This is incredibly frustrating in this game especially since just landing improperly can ruin your entire run. The last batch of levels basically requires a perfect run to get through.

I wish I liked these games more than I actually do. In theory, they're right up my alley, but I just get frustrated playing them. Still enjoyable in little 10-20 minute sessions, though. Glad this is a PS+ title, as I would have skipped it otherwise.

I LOVE this game! I've been playing away for more hours than I care to count and completing the pro objectives are now in my site! PRO TITAN SKY 3 CAN GET TO FUCK.

Fuck Roll 7 but like - Fuck... Roll 7!

I also believe this isn't on PC as of yet - but the first game came out on Steam not long after the PS release so I wouldn't be surprised to see it come soon.

@joelhulsey: yup. Play until it frustrates the hell out of you (and it will, oh it will) then put it down for a while.

Great game, and pretty awesome that it debuted on PS+

OlliOlliOlli was actually the original name of the prototype when they pitched it to Sony. It was so early in the prototype phase they didn't even want to show it to them in their pitch meeting but all their other pitches were turned down.

I spoke to some of the devs at Roll7 back at EGX 2014 for about 20 mins or something like that. It was awesome to see them pull off just these insane runs. During my time with it, I actually found the manuals easier to pull off than how you'd typically land in the first game and this was on a PS4 too.

I can second this. I'm abysmal at the game, but when you see people hitting the multi-millions in combos, it's easy to see how the game can take on a whole new level of skill.

I'm in love with this games. I've never been so dedicated to a modern high score title of this vein as with Olli Olli 2. Didn't play the first one, but I just can't stop playing this thing. Get used to the controls, it takes a bit of time. And bring a good sense of masochism to it as well. If you want to beat all the challenges, it's one of the most challenging video games I've ever played.

EDIT: At the people talking about short bursts? you mean like 3 hours bursts, right? RIGHT?

I gave it a few minutes, but the timing does seem really off somehow, and the controls are counter-intuitive to me. Nice style, but this was too much effort to be fun.

Can you use the d-pad in place of the analog stick? Seems like you'd want to do that for something with such exact timing.

Something about the controls never clicked with me in the first game. I downloaded 2 but haven't picked it up yet.

I love my Vita as well. I've put far more hours into my Vita than my 3ds, probably 20 hours to 1. Like Alex said, there just aren't enough games for the platform.

I really, really enjoyed the first Olli Olli, but this one feels weird, like the timing is off somehow? I'm not sure if I'm imagining it or not, but I played the first one on my MBP through my relatively low latency monitor with a DS4 and this one on my PS4 through the same monitor.

I could be imagining it, or it could be some latency issue with the PS4 over HDMI vs my MacBook over Display Port, but it really feels like I have to hit the button to land wayyyyy too early to stick the landing. I know I'm not just shit at timing, because I played a lot of the first game, but I was having trouble even finishing the first level without messing up a landing.

I actually think the timing is a bit easier in this one than in the first one.

Also landing manuals seems to be quite easy (easier then a regular perfect landing at times), but revert manuals (hitting down + x + holding left while your character is turning) are just fucking impossible to time in my opinion.

I've already finished all amateur levels (most with 4 or 5 stars, except for the last world which is just ridiculously hard) and am now severely stuck on some of the pro levels. For some challenges I don't understand how anyone can ever clear them. (Much like the highest level combos in fighting games.)

I hopped into this quickly to try it out and ended up getting super hooked on it. My only real complaint so far is that they take too long to teach you some stuff - I was really struggling to match up to the target scores by about level 4, then when my friend told me how to manual (which they don't teach you until world 2) I instantly more than quadrupled my best score on my next run.

I think there is probably some HD latency going on, but I must have adjusted to it pretty quickly because I didn't really run into any timing issues past about the first 10-15 minutes. Conversely I tried the Project Diva F demo for a couple of hours a while back and could never work that one out. I expect that the Vita would probably resolve that issue, but I'm enjoying it just fine on PS4 so far.

It's definitely got that competitive high-score hook, especially once you get a few friends on. Which I've found super easy to do at the moment given that it's on PS Plus. It's definitely helped fill out the leaderboards versus a lot of other score-focused games that I've played. Now I just need to get the hang of spins down! Overcoming THPS and Skate instincts was probably the biggest learning curve, but it was a fun challenge and I do think I like the way this game handles it.

@lausebub Totally with you there. It's got that real 'one more turn' hook.

No, several of the advanced tricks involve 90 and 180 degree rotations of the stick. There might even be one or two that require 240 degree rotations, I can't recall.

Last night I definitely had a moment like that. Like, you're in mid-air chaining up a crazy combo and then your brain suddenly doesn't what do anymore and you end up pressing buttons that don't do anything and fall on your face. Then you throw your controller against the wall, get a new one, and start again.

Ahh, too bad. Thanks, though.

Game looks cool, but don't think it's something I'd purchase without playing it first. Maybe I'll see if a friend has it so I can try it out.

This game is seriously rad. Only complaint is there's not really a good place to practice the more complicated motions in the tricktionary. Also on later levels the pull specific trick from specific grind challenges are pretty frustrating, but that's more a problem with my brain than the game.

Nope, though it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense. Honestly, I don't have any issues with the timing. It's something you pick up pretty quickly. The only thing I was having trouble with was pulling off manuals with any consistency, but then I finally realized they want you to press the direction and X at the same time rather than pressing X while you're holding the direction.

This game is really fun, in any case. So far finding it a bit easy, but I also haven't dipped into too many of the pro levels (or whatever the hell RAD mode is).

Yea that is my main complaint as well. I wished they let you go into that tutorial stage and just freely attempt all the tricks and such. Having to practice them while in a level, even the very first level, can be pretty frustrating.
