Despite having not played a Paper Mario game, I'm actually super excited for this. More reason for my 3DS to exist.

TTYD is my favorite game of all time. Hopefully this isn't too disappointing.

I really hope this game is good. Maybe not as good as TTYD, but better than SPM. Please.

They somehow made Paper Mario even less into an RPG then it used to be. No experience gain, actively trying to avoid battles, no party members. This sounds really lame.

I don't see why they're still even putting out the paper version, everything's digital these days anyway.

No leveling or weapons saddens me to the point where I probably won't pick this up. It looks fine, but not what I'm looking for in a Paper Mario game. Same thing they did with the Wii game.

Brad seems to think it is charming, but easy and boring. Also he doesn't like that it's an RPG where XP doesn't exist, BECAUSE THAT IS THE OPINION EVERY RATIONAL HUMAN BEING SHOULD HOLD.

He did specifically say he would recommend Bowser's Inside Story over this game.

Also, he spends like 20 minutes not using a fan on a windmill, because apparently neither he nor Vinny saw a single trailer for this game.

The Thousand Year Door is still awesome. From the looks of this, I'd highly recommend it over this game. And Mario & Luigi 1 & 3 have FAR better battle systems, in my mind. Reading the enemy's specific tells was really awesome.

Like most commenters here, I was also hoping it would be more like TTYD. I was planning on getting a 3DS just for this game, I guess I just saved myself some money. I would have preferred a great Mario RPG instead.

I've never managed to get into any of the Paper Mario games.

In every other RPG-style game, you get huge dungeons, character development, intriguing plotlines, dramatic tension, and a lot of character customisation.

In every other adventure-style game, you get clever puzzles, a great sense of exploration, and lots of branching dialogue (with the exception of myst-style games, which replaces dialogue with finding notes and books).

In Paper Mario? It doesn't have any of the merit that RPG/Adventure games have at all. No real dungeons (there's some several-screen areas with enemies, but they're not exactly fun to explore), no interesting characters, no dramatic intrigue, no real notable puzzles outside of 'use obvious object A on obvious thing B'... the whole game is just 'follow the path, jump/fireflower/hammer the enemies, hear a couple of lines from a fairly boring character, get an item, use the item, repeat'.

Nothing in these games feels engaging, and seems more like an exercise of going through the motions.

I'm extremely skeptical about this, I freaking love the first two Paper Mario games, and when I heard they were making another in that style, my excitement was through the roof, but looking at this... there's good change and bad change... and I don't like the changes made to this.

To each their own, but I would disagree with most of your points.

The games had clear dungeons that were generally distinct from "town" or "random field between town and dungeon"; they were of sufficient size for me. I liked the characters, but sure, it treats them more like Chrono Trigger in that they have basically no significant character arc once they join your party, so you're free to not like that. The games have a plot (and mini-story arcs specific to each region sometimes), some amount of character/party customization, but no, they don't aspire to Final Fantasy levels of intricacy. While we're at it, people seem to like the Dragon Quest and Pokemon games a bunch, but they also lack many of the RPG features you listed. Hell, same goes for Super Mario RPG, also beloved.

Sure, the puzzles are simple, but to be an apologist for a moment, the Super Nintendo was pretty much the last platform where Nintendo actually had the balls to put anything even resembling a challenge into Mario and Zelda games, so what did you really expect? They're designed so that children 10 and under can solve the puzzles, instead of getting completely stuck and never finishing the game. I found the worlds fun to explore and to see how they literally unfold as you traverse them, so we'll have to disagree on that one. And there are about a zillion good adventure games that don't have branching dialogue, and I'm perfectly capable of enjoying games that don't have it.

The games in the series try to be a good old fashioned pre-FF6 RPG where you know what your quest is pretty much from the start, and there isn't going to be some mindfuck at the end of disc 1 that makes you completely reevaluate what you're really fighting for. The games are a lighthearted romp, and while I'm with you that I often enjoy intricacy and freedom in a lot of the games I play, I'm not against the occasional lighthearted romp. They're not your cup of tea, but they really have been well made games up to this point.

The one puzzle solution that was shown off is the same one that's been in trailers released by Nintendo so there shouldn't be anything to worry about.

It did make it painful to watch though.

You're blanketing every RPG out there as a time consuming, 50+ hour inconvenience.

By the way, previous Paper Mario's were a bit more robust than what we're seeing in this quick look and they didn't span as long as your ignorant assessment leads you to believe.

Between Sticker Star and the painfully easy Super Paper Mario, I'm beginning to think they've pretty much put a bullet in the idea of Paper Mario being a series for the RPG enthusiast. Which hopefully means they'll double down on giving resources to the team that makes the Mario & Luigi games, while the Paper Mario series continues to sadly flounder about from genre to genre, trying to find an identity.
