Quick Look: Payday: The Heist

This game could be about anything as far as I can tell. Surely bank robbery is about planning, time management and quick movement plus the getaway. This is just a shooter with a bank robbing skin.

I know it is silly to expect games to be realistic but it just seems so dumb to have people robbing a bank where they spend ages doing all sorts of stupid stuff and mow down dozens and dozens of cops and SWAT.

Why not incorporate some puzzle elements before the raid where you have to plan the best strategy and it makes the game loads harder if you botch it up. - and at least have some sort of time pressure - Jeff's character twiddling his thumbs waiting for drilling and then floor burning to finish was ridiculous.

Maybe i'm being a bit harsh, because we only saw a short section but this just seems like a bad shooter which is trying to grab some shine from a well respected film.

The idea is awesome, but it looks like execution is pretty sub-par. It should be way more tense and considerably faster paced.

As a man who loves Heat, I find it strange that Heat is this unicorn that no one seems to be able to catch.

P.S. In Heat: the game, the point is not to shoot your gun if at all possible. The bank guards were crazy to start opening fire in a crowded bank like that. More tactical gameplay please.

It's a really cool concept for a game and they seem to have done OK with it but there are a bunch of little things(that maybe I just didn't get to see in this quicklook) that could make this way cooler.

I, certainly, always loved the bank robbery missions in GTA.

Whoa. $15? I was considering it when it I assumed it was full price. Maybe wait until it drops to $40 deal.

I'm happy there's another solid Sony exclusive game out there, what they do best at. What weird masks, though.

I may be in the minority here, but I'd rather see a Point Break game than a Heat game. There is a shockingly little amount of guys in Nixon masks mooning bank cameras in this.

If this had good gunplay and the fragile alliance stuff from Kane and Lynch 2 like Jeff said... this would be amazing. However, it looks like some really bland gunplay.

Jeff is right about the gunfire I was thinking the exact same thing maybe I can mod the pc version

I feel like Jeff played this as CoD: The Bank Map than using any of the ideas or mechanics that are actually in there. Surely there's a better way to starting the heist than shooting the manager and automatically triggering a shootout?

Game needs a soundtrack by Slipknot, for more reasons than the most obvious one.

was it gearbox or something?

Been pretty interested in this game since I saw the deals on steam. Let's see how it is...

This looks alright but as many have said the gunplay looks kind of bland. I still think GTA4 came the closest to HEAT with it's bank robbery. Mainly because it encompassed everything from the planning, shit going wrong, fellow heisters getting killed and most importantly the chase. Which no other game seems to have even attempted so far.

I want a Dark Knight inspired level ha ha

This is like the beginning of The Dark Knight, meets The Town, meets Heat.

Jeff and Ryan have seen Heat a lot. Probably not as much as I have, but still, a lot.

Wish they'd either polished the shooting some more or add in more strategy/planning stuff.

It's sad that the most accomplished tribute to Heat, is a story mission in GTA IV. With the abundance of military shooters, a well made heist-shooter would actually be a breath of fresh air. Keep in mind, this can't be overstated, sound design can not, I repeat, can not be left by the waistside. The Oomph of the weapons in Heat are iconic to that movie. Oh, and hire Viklund!

To me, the shooting is really weird, but I like the concept behind the game.

I was looking for a co-op game to play with my friend this weekend, but this looks way too bland. It's like an FPS with a half-assed theme thrown into the mix. Try harder, GRIN guys.

I don't get why everyone is being so harsh on the game, it's a frickin' budget title. It's only fifteen dollars people.

Sure it doesn't have CoD level shooting, Battlefield destruction or sound, or stupid car chases and such but that's because it's not a million dollar title. Geez, people expect way too much. This game is extremely fun for what it is, L4D with cops.

It's just as deep, if not deeper than L4D. I really hope they continue to support it and add more levels. I love the unlocking system so far.

Despite how much this clearly derives from Heat and to a lesser extent Left 4 Dead, I really appreciate how unique this concept is to the gaming landscape. Definitely want to check it out, even though it doesn't look like it'll be anything too great

I continue to wonder why GB does quicklooks of multiplayer focused games playing by themselves. APB, Brink, Payday... it doesn't really show the games off.

Thanks for playing this game, I was curious about it. Now that I've seen it in action, I'll just go watch Heat again instead.

Well this seemed fine.

That was a terrible way to rob a bank. Looks like this game requires better coordination which is hard when playing with randoms.

The game actually looked good, but Jeff did a good job of convincing me otherwise.

What I did do though was rewatch Heat, honestly I forget even watching it so it was like it was the first time, really good movie, not sure why my memories of it aren't clearer. Maybe I watched it the first time while drunk or something.

this is now a game on my want list :P i keep hearing that this is like left 4 dead meets heat (i love both), so that means payday the heist is there illegitimate love child

Jeff was really down on it, but for 15 bucks it seems like a steal. Kinda wish the guys had done a run through with Ryan playing (they gotta have a second PS3 in the office, no?) Anyway, I'm def picking this up.
