Why have Giant Bomb started doing 2 quick looks per game? Not enough interesting titles to go around?

Seems to happen when they take looks at early/demo builds of games in a normal or EX quick look, followed by another go once the game is properly released.

Yeah, it's this. That last QL we did was with a real raw build of the game where I had to load individual levels through a debug menu.

When the previous QL is based on a game that far from being finished we like to go back and look at the final product, though in this case there turned out to be very little difference.

Man nobody is going to defend POD? Don't pretend you never rocked out to Boom or Alive! Wonder what Patrick listens to, probably way into Coldplay and kings of leon

I was going to say, was POD even a christian rock band? I wasnt really the biggest POD fan, but every song of theirs I remember didnt have any religious ties (at least that I know of).

Sure, I like POD fine. Think they even have a new song out. And yes, they have religious undertones.

Ah, Brad, I love watching you play games so much. At times frustrating, but mostly just fun.

This game looks really cool, I already have the trial downloaded so I think I'll have to give it a shot later tonight.

Brad makes a good point about contrast between control fidelity/movement speed and challenge level. It is very irritating when challenge is exacerbated by slow movement speed of character. This is an issue I had with Child of Eden. For some reason, the developer of that game chose to make the cursor movement speed (with controller) noticeably slower and smaller than it was in Rez. Because of that, dealing with the a large amount of incoming enemies became an incredibly frustrating chore. You see the thing coming at you, you move your control stick in the appropriate direction, but you fail because the goddamn cursor couldn't get there in time.

Same reason, as Brad mentioned, why Meat Boy and Trials are so satisfying. Yes, they're extremely hard, but the speed and fidelity is there to surmount any challenge. Those games frequently give you more speed than you strictly need in most cases. That balance feels right.

@beard_of_zeus: The reason why I'm tired of indie platformers is because they all feel the same to me. One unique gimmick and the art style is all that seems to separate them. Indie devs can do so much more. There are plenty of fantastic indie games that avoid falling into the rut of "oh, another indie platformer," like Octodad. That game was brilliant. Medal of Honor had more resources, yeah, but remember that with more resources comes more risk. Triple-A games can't base the entire experience off of one gimmick like indie games can.

Regardless, the reason I said that is because I knew people were going to disagree with me, and that's the point. Just because I'm tired of indie platformers doesn't mean Pid is bad or the genre is bad. It's exactly the same thing with Medal of Honor.

That's fair, I guess I have the opposite reaction to this genre and seem to always find something interesting or likeable about a platformer. Maybe it's just a personal preference! All genres of games have their mediocre or un-innovative representatives, though. And you are right, more resources = more risk, but I would say creating something very similar to other games carries just as much risk in not resonating with an audience in the market.

Thanks for the civil response and having a constructive conversation on the internet! Yay! :)

If you're trying to inform people about a game, maybe someone whose response to most questions about the game are some variation of "I have no idea" isn't the best decision?

@Labman: They're making so much money on IOS I can't see Epic greenlighting that.

They should try and get the rights to publish the first one on PC. XBLA games seem to sell a lot better there.

I love what they've done with the presentation (even more interesting and refreshing than the great job they did with Bionic Commando: Rearmed) but the design around player difficulty is flawed in much the same way as BC:R. While I think Pid is a marked improvement in the base platforming compared to BC:R in this respect, the boss fights are still the same frustrating bullshit. Either this tells me they truly stand by their design or they haven't learned a damn thing, which is a shame either way because there's no doubt they are so goddamn compelling in the presentation department.

Oh well, can't say I'm wanting for more games right now and I suppose it will find an audience but I don't think it's a keeper in any other respect than what everyone can see is the strength of the game which is the visuals and music.

They weren't a traditional christian rock band where every other line of the song is about God or Christ. The religious stuff took a backseat and was pretty damn tame. I wouldn't even label them as a christian rock band but that's just me.

I appreciate that games like this can find an audience, but so many unkillable enemies+floaty/slow controls mean I'll probably be skipping this one.

I like difficult games, but this seems frustrating and hard in a bad way.

Brad makes every game seem 5 times harder than it is, though.

Nope, I've been playing the demo and the game is indeed very punishing and frustrating. It often requires you to use the gravity beams to get to out of reach places which is in itself a cool thing. But placing and navigating the beams is unnecessarily frustrating and difficult. The game might get better once you get the slingshot but I've decided not to bother trying to get that far (it might not be in the demo). For those who like a challenge don't mind a lot of trial and error and have plenty of time on their hands this might be the perfect game. But I can't say I've enjoyed the time I've spent with this game and I'm not prepared to waste more time on it. So for me it's a no-buy.

The demo doesn't introduce the gameplay mechanics properbly, I've played a decent chunk of the game and I'm really enjoying it. It's very much like BC:R, one of my favourite games of this generation, it takes some getting used to, but once you've become familiar with the controls they're extremely responsive and they do a lot of interesting things with the mechanics of the game. Also that butler is pretty easy, Brad is making this look way harder and more teadious than it actually is.
