Play with the Nunchuck and Wiimote, its a game changer. The Gamepad will still show the map, just keep it on the side while you play.

I understand why they would refuse to use a wiimote. I fucking hated that thing. It was the reason I sold my wii like a month after I bought it.

i'd say around the fall of next year there will be enough great looking games for me to get a Wii U. This is the first of five games that'll convince me to get that system.

I'm quite interested in this, but not if it means that I have to spend additional money to buy a Wii Remote - which I'm unlikely to use for anything else - over and above the cost of the game.

The controls for Pikmin 3 look awful and inaccurate. This iteration of Pikmin doesn't seem to be worth $60. This is definitely a game where I'll borrow it from a friend to try out.

For those who think the difficulties were due to playing with the Game Pad and not the Wii Mote/Nunchuck...they're not.

Alex is playing with the gamepad, of course he's having trouble. It's nearly unplayable. Wiimote + nunchuk is the only way to play the game. If Nintendo would have kept the c stick in and limited the distance of the pikmin throws like the Gamecube versions it would have been fine.

He was playing with the Gamepad. It's fine, but like others have said, the Wiimote/Nunchuck is the way to go sadly.

It's not unplayable. I've been using it primarily. You do have to get used to it though.

Also I expect this every time but I really wish people would stop complaining about "playing bad". He gave enough of a sample to get an idea of what this game is.

I am just going to blame the lack of skill Alex has shown due to the WiiU mote. That thing looks like garbage. Also thank you Drew. Your "c-stick" (song) was a dead on impersonation!

I wouldn't let that stop you. I don't have a nunchuck thing either because I never owned a Wii. I think the gamepad controls just fine. Takes a few minutes to get use (controlling your movement and the reticle with the same thumbstick) but the game doesn't seem too demanding to the point of that being frustrating.

This looks fantastic, still a bit pricy to buy a Wii U just for this and ZombiU, but I'll really consider it if the next bunch of games also seem interesting.

Game is awesome. But for the love of god, use Nunchuck/wiimote combo for controls. The boss fight seen in the quick look is a huge mess with the gamepad.

@alex, I had the same issue with the controls. I could have sworn that I couldn't turn the camera without snapping and then all of a sudden I was able to do it. There are a lot of instances where controls are locked if you're doing something else.

I'm loving the game. It's incredibly engaging, but my one complaint is the controls are pretty terrible on the gamepad. Also not being able to switch characters from the pause state is frustrating.

Have any of you that are giving the advice to play Pikmin 3 with the Nunchuck/wiimote combo ever played Pikmin 3 with the WiiU Controller? Because I do not have a problem with it.

@joris: I have, and it's fine, but Alex is clearly having trouble with it, so I recommended the Wii Remote/Nunchuk combo. The fact that the L Stick controls both your movement AND the movement of your cursor is just not something some people want to do or can figure out how to do (effectively). For those people, there's the Wii Remote! The comparison to playing an RTS with a controller versus with a mouse (which someone made earlier) is apt. Some people could play an RTS with a controller fine, but many (most?) will benefit from having a mouse.

And I said it before, but you need to use the ZL for lock if you're playing on the GamePad!

One of the benefits of using the game pad is that you can send someone to a place by just clicking on the map on the controller. I think that really helps.

Joris: When you play with the wiimote, you still have the gamepad in front of you for the map, and to give orders. I played an hour with the gamepad alone, and was shocked at how bad it played (especially in stressful situations such as the boss from the quick look).

I am pretty sure the game was designed to nunchuck/wiimote to begin with, and "ported" to gamepad support.

I do not understand why everyone is so upset with this quick look. Do they feel that the game was being poorly represented because Alex was playing so bad? That's not the case, I've never played a Pikmin game before and seeing this quick look made me want to go out and get it.

Hmm, never played a pikmin. I kind of stopped riding the Nintendo wagon after the SNES. The gameplay looks exactly like the Overlord series. I wonder if the slave A.I. is just as bad in Pikmin as in Overlord?

Looks like a really neat game but not enough to actually want a Wii U. Alex also just needs to have a bit more confidence in himself, I think most of us can forgive mistakes. After all how many QLs of puzzle games from the main on camera crew have we seen where they get lost for 10 minutes on something basic

Hasn't everyone on a long trip imagined a character of some sort running alone the side of your vehicle running and jumping over obstacles?

To make that a video game in the 80's, thats one thing. But surely that isn't a 'genius' thought considering it's not uncommon.

Yeah, Pikmin 1 and 2 clearly do, but Pikmin 3 takes place on an entirely different planet from those games.

Edit: Scratch that. Did some searching on the Pikmin wiki, apparently PNF-404 is the same planet as the first two games. Odd. I could have sworn it was confirmed to be a different planet entirely.

@everettescott: It's genius in a sense to take something so simple and make something iconic out of it.

And hell, the dude made Pikmin because he loves gardening.
