Wii remote and nunchuck is great with this game, and you still get access to the map on the game pad too.
The feature Drew was talking about is now a lock on and disperse.
And the multiplayer/co-op is really fun in this game, I played that for like 5 hours yesterday..

This seems like a pretty neat game. Won't buy a Wii U for it but still. Hey, good for those that did buy one.

Many people have said but I've only played the previous Pikmin games after they came to the Wii and I can't imagine playing those games with a gamepad, worked so well with the Wiimote. Anyways you 3 guys were awesome together nice QL! :D

Questionable play aside, this quick look has made me pretty interested in the game. I didn't like the original Pikmin because of the overall time limit. I rented Pikmin 2, but couldn't figure out how to get the multiplayer to work. I think I might give Pikmin another try after this.

Edit: And I just got to the part where Drew asks about the old C-Stick orbiting. I just assumed the right analog stuck did that. Why would they change something that worked so well?

I was initially off put by that too. They include a lock-on then charge mechanic which seems to be meant to replace it since the right stick is dedicated to the camera now. It usually works out fine but I miss having the C-Stick parade move for a quick way to force my Pikmin out of danger.

Who are the real monsters in the Pikmin universe?

I mean, they basically consume everything and turn into more biomass for the hive, they are basically Tyranid.

Sorry Alex. I like ya, but this was really bad gameplay. This is an amazing game if you play with a wiimote and nunchuck. Way more precise and fun just like everyone else said. Also, Drew is delightful as always. In the wake of the recent tragedy here on GB, Drew becoming a personality has been the one upside.

You can also find the dodge whistle which lets you quickly roll your troop left or right. Not quite as versatile as c-stick but it helps a lot.

This was quite a disaster for the most part, thankfully the game speaks for itself to some degree.

Some basic stuff:

1)

There is no swarming per-se (the "orbital move" Drew kept referencing from the earlier games) BUT there is now a lock-on + charge move that lets you lock onto an enemy or object and command your squad to attack/interact with the desired object AND an roll left/right maneuver to evade. Both of these effectively replace the swarming mechanic.

2)

The Wiimote/Nunchuk controls are, for one, the far superior control method and also don't make you lose any functionality aside from manual camera control which is completely negligible since the "snap behind your back" move is all you really need and the speed and precision gained from having mouse-like pointer controls far outweigh the loss of camera controls.

3)

The map is not just a map to look at, it is also used to command your squad around when you have them split up. You can command each one of your separate captains to move to any discovered point on the map (along with his selected Pikmin). The second you touch the screen, the game pauses (you can do this without pausing by touching a symbol in the top right) and lets you scroll around the whole level and plan your pathing

4)

The multiplayer consists of co-op mission mode (can be played solo, too) and versus multiplayer called Bingo Battle. I don't know where Alex has heard it's not that great, all I ever hear is praise. Maybe the Idle Thumbs crew should teach the Giant Bombers a thing or two about Pikmin multiplayer!

5)

@drewbert Don't let this QL experience fool you, this is a superb, nay - THE ULTIMATE Pikmin title! :)

I found this Quick Look to be really entertaining. I do agree though that Alex needed a bit more info on the game mechanics, but I thought he did ok overall. I don't know how the crew prepares for these things, but if it's a little rush rush so you guys can post it soon after release, I'm sure I'm not the only one that wouldn't mind you guys taking a bit more time. Then you'd feel a bit more comfortable with your skills and experience.

Near the end it was just more proof of this being powered by unleaded nightmare fuel. Looks interesting though & guess WiiU people will have to be stuck with this until Nintendo figures out that the new Animal Crossing game would be great on the WiiU.

Watching him play with the gamepad was painful. Wii Remote is perfect for this game and functions almost like using a mouse in an RTS game.

If past Wii experience has taught me anything, I feel like if I tried to play this with a Wii remote, my cursor would be super shakey and I wouldn't be able to be precise at all. Is it really that much better?

Hm, sounds like either your room or your hands are the problem. The cursor is normally very stable but if the remote sees other infrared lights near your sensor bar (direct sunlight, christmas lights, etc) it gets confused. Try going into the sensitivity setting screen in the system menu, that should show you what the remote sees and if it sees more than two lights (the ends of the sensor bar) you've got interference. I played quite a few FPSes on the Wii and found the aiming to work really well so the hardware does not add innate jitter.

Shaky cursor is only an issue for regular Wiimote. This supports (doesn't require!) WiiMotionPlus which uses the gyro and does not rely on the IR sensor like the regular Wiimote.

Are you sure the motion plus helps there? A gyroscope only detects rotation, it's a fallback used when the remote can't see the IR anymore but normally it prefers using the IR since that has no drift and such. From what I heard the PS Move requires recalibrating when used in an FPS, the Wii remote does not require recalibrating as long as it can see the IR.

Yes, I didn't want to go down into the gory details this much. I meant to say "doesn't rely AS MUCH or SOLELY on the IR." Ultimately, all WM+ enabled games I've played don't have the jitter associated with regular Wiimotes (unless you have crazy shaky hands^^).

@yeliwofthecorn: If you think that's bad, juts go bad to the Patrick/Brad QL of the Metal Gear Rising Demo. Possibly one of the most frustratingly ignorant videos I've seen, complaining about controls, when they ignore the tutorial and when the game reminds you of controls any time an action is needed, and ALSO has controls/alternate controls on the pause menu at all times and they still seem to think there's no run button.

I love quick looks, but I don't like quick looks where the person playing has explicitly played the segment beforehand. Specifically with puzzles, as I think it leaves little for the crewman to discuss.

Plus, Alex does very little to introduce talking points. Props to Drew for pickin' up the slack.

Edit: NVM! Spoke to soon :P

To be fair... I'm only a little past this part and I wasn't fairing all that much better than Alex. I beat that boss on my 2nd attempt. First time I ran out of daylight. Luckily the damage you do to it persists to the next day. The game doesn't really explain all of its mechanics well.

However, I have the excuse that this is my first Pikmin game. Never played the other two. And this game is super delightful regardless. Enjoying the hell out of it but almost feel a little overwhelmed atm with controlling so many Pikmin, the time limit on each day and having to make sure you collect fruit to survive. I suppose it would be too easy without those challenges tho.

I've done very little research into this game because I want to be surprised when I finally pick up a Wii U but i'm glad that this game has a unified onion. It really sucked in Pikmin 2 that you had to go underground and transform your pikmin in order to get a certain type. And it was even more frustrating that you needed those types to get the items you needed.

I recently got the Wii version of Pikmin 2 just to see how it played and I actually prefer the Wii mote and nunchuck. It's much more accurate. Although it'll be tough deciding between that and a touch screen map.

As guy who has never played Pikmen, this Quick Look was just fine, it showed me how the gameplay works, and why it is such a captivating game.

You don't need a good skilled player to do this, and it really annoys me whenever people who knows a game complain about this aspect of a Quick Look, as if that is important to get a good impression of a game. If that is so important go watch a walkthrough!
