@Niklas:
I actually got it right on the first try... Without thinking about numbers at all, I guessed that the logical thing would be to just give each porter every other bag (ACE, BDF) as I intuited that that should be the closest you can get to 50-50. I then realized that whoever takes the heaviest should also take the lightest to compensate for that, as that seems reasonable not knowing the exact weight of any of the bags. So I arrived at ACF, BDE, before Ryan rung the bell once. I agree that, according to the rules, that puzzle could be a bit trial-and-error-ish, but the game doesn't seem to expect you to get it right on the first try, anyway.

I can say that the 3D Models are a bit of a weird choice for this game, but hey it is a "3DS" game what do you expect? Though I would love to see some really high res sprites instead.

@Rox360:

Fair enough, and thanks for the answer. :)

I guess I just assumed that there would be a unique solution to the problem. I think a more math-intensive spinoff of Layton could be really fun (but how many would actually buy it?).

@Niklas: Total weight is 40 pounds or less. Not 40 pounds exactly. I think the puzzle was designed so you would have some trial and error (I'm thinking you could get it in two tries), because the weights are unknown even to you.

Hopefully someone can answer this. This game looks right up my alley, but I'm wondering if I should start with the first Layton game. Suggestions?

Do Americans get confused when reading a book by a British author that uses 'fortnight', though? I mean over here we can code switch to American easily... I'd have assumed Americans would do the same.

@cbarnes86: The series is split up into 2 trilogies. The first trilogy (Mysterious Village, Diabolical Box, Unwound Future) make up the present day trilogy where Luke has been traveling with the Professor for a while. The 2nd trilogy (Last Spector, Miracle Mask, Civilization A) make up the prequel trilogy where the Professor meets Luke for the first time and they start traveling together, so you could start with either trilogy and not be too lost as they all play pretty much the same. Regardless of where you start, they are all great games and you could probably pick up the older ones for a decent price now.

@HaltIamReptar: I knew it was 40 pounds or less. I just wanted to set up a 'worst case' scenario since I assumed it could be solved mathematically. I'm glad to hear that my assumption was just wrong, haha. Thanks. :)

Vinny did that "Angela, Mona, Samantha" thing once before and I thought it might be a reference to Sex and the City, but now I don't think it is. Any ideas?

Yes, they probably do. And from my experience, (I lived in New Zealand for 25 years before moving to the US in 2003) most Americans never bother to learn to code switch and are happy to remain ignorant.

It just does not come up very often in conversation in the US. Like, almost never. I've heard it used maybe twice in the last three years. We just say "two weeks".

This could be the game that gets me to buy a 3DS, if only (sadly) to get a copy of the original Donkey Kong (although seems like they're giving the NES version, though). Also, during the robot part, I was hearing more "Take My Breath Away" by Berlin, than Portishead. And As for them, as much as loved all three albums, Dummy (the first one) is their best one and Frakking fantastic!

P.S. That rabbit's cu...Dynamite!

Wow! Did anyone else catch the name on the dialogue at the end of the quick look. Doris Pompitous... Now the Steve Miller Band's "The Joker" makes so much more sense!

:-)

Cheers,

Uhh...I'm American and I've known what a fortnight was for a while now. Learned about it in school. Don't make sweeping generalizations.

You being American and knowing what a fortnight is does not change the fact that most Americans don't, and they don't know the metric system either.

Oh yeah, the plot isn't at all predictable even from the small amount you hear in this QL.

Still, I'm being unfair. The draw for these games are the puzzles, mostly.

Some youtube videos are uploaded in 3-D (like red/blue or magenta/green) is it possible to do that for the 3DS videos? That would be freaking awesome. (And get giantbomb a ton more views)

They did this with some Monkey Ball quick look awhile back... I think you need the red&blue 3D glasses for it to work though.
