This is quite possibly the most painful thing I've ever watched.

The game doesn't work with a controller, and that means games like this aren't made anymore. Also, an FYI for Ryan: CoD works with a controller but you'd still lose just as hard to a kb/m player :P

Here's what Q3 looks when played with a mouse

Releasing this was a bad idea, considering Quake Live exists.

Like many have said already this sadly is way too dark and controls simply terrible.

Such a shame, since Q3A is the best game ever made for FFA.

There is a lot of hate going around here.  Even if its all true: Yes, Quake is better on KB/M; Yes, this is too expensive; Yes twitch shooters are dead, esp. on a platform that doesn't allow for mods.  But you know what?  I'm still going to get this.  I grew up on Quake 1 and 2 but have long since stopped gaming on a PC due to affordabiltiy and compatibility issues.  This will suffice as a Quake fix for me.

Also, yes the game is too dark...on default setting.  There is a brightness setting (~ gamma) in the options menu.

This version stinks, and the 1200 points is just way too much. I'd rather install my old PC-version again.

@Sessh: Agreed. I absolutely hate playing most games today as a FFA mode, and almost always would rather play in a team mode.

This Quake 3 Arena however, absolutely love me some free for all.

So weird to hear the announcer being far more helpful instead of laughing maniacally after you murder multi(kill)ple people in one go. Fuck, PC gaming is so more hardcore lol; fuck tutorials, just get in there and shoot some heads.

My guess would be that they've implemented a modern style real-time dynamic lightning system, I think the original Q3A - just like Q1 and Q2 - primarily relied on pre-rendered lightmaps, then they simply didn't bother with optimizing the maps for this, or didn't add an HDR shader to correct for it.
I'm just guessing, but i've seen similar results in some Quake 1 source ports which attempts these things.

Well, to be fair, many FPSes work pretty well on consoles. The people porting this clearly just didn't bother. Of course, had they bothered it wouldn't have been very similar to the real Q3A, since that kind of extremely fast gameplay isn't possible at all on a game pad.

They could have had maps that were similar to the original Q3 maps, and the Q3 visual style, but remade and optimized for much slower gameplay on smaller maps.

I just can't go back and play this anymore. I loved Q3 at the time, but I need something with more depth now. At this point it's like going back to a brawler.

This reminds me that I (re)purchased all the fucking Quake games in Steam for a few bucks a while back... I really should head back into the world of real shooters.

Ryan calls CoD fast. Nope, it's not fast. At the very basic level that gameplay is extremely slow - CoD just makes everything around you seem fast and hectic. That's part of the console FPS trick. You're not exactly jumping off a ledge, rotating 180 degrees in the air and railgunning a fool before you land running.

Remaking maps for much slower gameplay on smaller maps would not be Quake 3 Arena. It'd be something else entirely. How would that have been a good port? How would that have been them bothering?

Well, they didn't name it Quake 3 Arena, or even Quake Live, they named it Quake Arena Arcade, which I'd say would allow them to make a 'separate entry' or spin-off of the Quake series.

They could still have made something that resembles Quake 3 Arena, and retain a little of it's feel (though not much) while making a more console oriented arena FPS.

This is a type of game that is just not playable at all on consoles without major changes, requiring them to bother to change stuff for a very different platform. A good port from PC to console is not just making something run on a technically superior or inferior platform, but also requires the game to be optimized to play well on the new platform. In the case of Q3A that is impossible, unless they turn auto-aiming way up beyond crazy territory, probably resulting in something more like "press X to kill" than actually playing a game. So what they'd have to do is to go the Halo route, as gamepads can't do the kind of sensitivity and speed that keyboard+mouse can, don't try to do that. Make the game play way slower and optimize the level designs to reflect that.

hehe, ea-guy just doesn't get it. it's fine that there are fps games made specifically for console gamepads and yes those clearly work fine. they work because they were designed for the input method.

but this game wasn't, it was specifically made for mouse control, and the game of quake3arena or quakelive can't be recreated on a gamepad. it just can't, it's physically impossible for the controller to recreate the mouse inputs required to play the game properly. therefore a direct port of the game quake3 will never work without mouse support. it has nothing to do with pc fps games being more hardcore or the people playing them being crazy shut-ins or console games being more mainstream.

Yeah, it's not like I expected anything super crazy good looking or anything, but any sort of screen effect to imply "turning" other than literally adding π to your view angle would've gone a long way.

they made no effort to smooth out the movement speed for controllers, then charged 15 dollars for a game that's free and plays better on the PC...

I really really really hope that no one buys this. Don't encourage this kind of behavior people. They didn't spend $15 worth of time porting this.
