WHOA. The audio levels are sky high in this video compared to the Resident Evil QL that went up today. Might want to look into that, guys.

Burnout Revenge > Burnout Paradise... Controversial! but it truly is better soundtrack, better modes (actual crash mode) , better way to access races and no usless overworld that made you miss the turns until you learned the whole layout of the city.

Burnout 3 > Burnout Revenge > Burnout Paradise.

Open-world racing games just suck (well, they got it almost right in Hot Pursuit).

I'm in the process of 100 percenting Paradise for the THIRD time. Like Jeff said, something about that game just makes you want to play it over and over again.

I feel like Split/second's explosions and overall environments looked better than this game. Also the crashes don't look as satisfying as burnout's. From an onlooker's perspective the game seems like a weird mishmash of the two games which is OK but not a day one purchase for me. I'll have to wait for the game to drop under $20 before I consider a purchase or maybe I'll rent the game.

@depecheload: Yeah, Burnout Paradise was awesome. I still play it from time to time and the multiplayer community is still as strong.

Seems to me the biggest bugbear with this game is that it's called `Ridge Racer` but doesnt play like `Ridge Racer`. Apart from that fact ( i daresay they used the name to grab attention ) it looks pretty good. With Burnout taking alterantive routes, i hated the top down game of burnout. This is ok by me

You can create shortcuts and make things blow up in a track by drifting and building up a gauge. No clue what this could be.

@CptBedlam: Agreed, loved the look of Paradise but kept getting lost on enough of the races to just have to give up on the game. Still wondering why they didn't put up obstacles on the outer edges of the races to keep people from going too far off course (ie. leave it open for a couple blocks outside the straight path on the race if you miss a turn but leaving it completely open was just silly to me).

so speaking of drifting, i've been playing a lot of Forza 4 recently and I wanna know, how the fuck does one go about getting a perfect drift score?  I think the best I've achieved so far is a 2/4 rating.  Part of that is that I play Forza like the sim that it is, so drifting usually means I've messed up a turn, but yeah.  Seems pretty strict.

The in-world UI elements are cool, but it'd be even cooler if they weren't redundantly on the standard UI.

They'll show you your score and time twice, but no health meter or track map?

This is very like Flatout, right down to the slightly second rate look of everything, terrible music, lack of polish, and really fun gameplay.

Oh how I loved Flatout's weird minigames.

Anyway, loading screen: Rich people are noted for eating croissants? Croissants are really cheap!

I can tell it's the Frostbite engine just by looking at the menu.

Frostbite Engine is EA's. This has absolutely nothing to do with it. You don't even know what a Game Engine/GDK is, do you?

AAAAANYWAY...

This game looks pretty great. Very similar to Split/Second it seems, but that's fine. Since Disney shut down Black Rock, this is the closest we'll get to a proper S/S2, I guess. I just wish it didn't control like a "typical" arcade racer, with the heavy emphasis on physics. Even though they're "arcadey", games like Need for Speed and Split/Second still drift relatively realistically. Just compare it to Burnout, whose excellent, responsive drifting is more like Mario Kart or something. This here, it REALLY should've controlled like a proper Ridge Racer, and just build all the original elements around it. But even the CORE of this game is wrong. Not necessarily worse, but definitely different. I like a lot of the ideas here though, so I'll get over it. Wish it looked "cleaner" though. Again, it looks a TON more like Split/Second than it does any Ridge Racer. I'd like to see a few clean, futuristic cities and beachside resorts...

Woah, woah, woah, hold the fuck on. I surely hope that "but" isn't the conjunction you were going for - Split/Second was awesome, no "buts" about it.

I know I'm not alone in thinking this is the closest we'll get to having a Flatout 4 game. As Ryan and Jeff said, the Ridge Racer name really does throw people off in all the wrong ways.

What is up with all the bloom in games these days? Racing games and FPS especially seem to have WAY too much bloom these days. It's ugly and hurts my eyes. It makes every blurry. Dead Island, Call of Juarez The Cartel and Syndicate seem to be the worst offenders. After playing an hour of any of those games, my eyes are in tears and pain from all the bloom. We have HDR for a reason developers! No need to throw so much bloom into games. Damn bloom....
