I remember playing Fokker. That was the last air combat game that I ever found simple. Also I was in middle school. Now even WWI flight sims are technical. Not that I complain. It's about realism.

This game looks a ton more fun than most flight sims. It helps that it has a nice clear map and objective markers, stuff like that.

Wow this was so many kinds of awesome. Vinny, Drew and Dave sim quick looks are always the best.

Oh man. When Drew got shot in the face, I lost my shit. That was so phenomenal.

Drew looks like a school kid on a field trip in that screen cap.

So, not sure if someone has asked/answered this, but how does IR tracking work when you're looking behind you? Drew is obviously not turning all the way around, so how far does he have to turn? Is it hard to keep looking at the screen?

Since I see some folks are interested in trying ROF I have some important advice before you get started.

1. Turn off Windows UAC before you install. If you leave it on an important second bunch of files will not be installed.

2. That second bunch of files are M$ libraries that are required to have installed or the game won't work. Make sure you install all of them even if you think you have them already. They won't hurt anything trust me. Vista and Windows 7 users I'm looking at you. :-)

3. Have patience. This a sim and not your usual type of PC game. Take some time and set up your joystick and buttons before you get too involved. Study the in-game Options screen. Everything works we promise, just ease into it. As we say - Only practice will make you an Ace!

4. Don't jack the video settings all the way up and expect total fluid framerates. Flight-sims eat PCs for breakfast. Set at medium settings and work your way up until you encounter a slowdown or stutters then back off a notch.

Just some friendly advice to the uninitiated. ROF is loads of fun and when you finally get good and you can shoot other folks down it is a real feeling of accomplishment.

What QL are they talking about at the beginning, with mechs? I don't remember these guys doing a QL since the Warthog flight sim.

Before this they recorded "Random PC Game: Mechwarrior 4 Vengeance. It's a subscriber video though.

It wasn't a QL, it was the most recent Random PC Game (Mechwarrior 4).

Is anyone else afraid of flying and had problems watching this one?

I'm terrified of flying but love all these flight sim QLs that Dave, Drew & Vinny do. Something about this one though, maybe because of that track IR made me absolutely nauseous! When they were trying to crash I almost barfed! Haha.

Dave, Drew and Vinny are the last bastion of real PC gamers on GB. Support them!

Getting shot in the face as he turned around was amazing, and everyone just losing their shiite as things turned from bad to worse really cracked me up. :)

These videos are some of my favorites; it's really hard to miss with Vinny, Dave, and Drew.

These kinds of QL's are the best.

ROF is a lot of fun, even if you aren't a hardcore flight guy. the planes fly nice and slow, and the dogfights are very close and tense.

It's about time this game got some attention. It is constantly being updated and developed. The team is constantly improving the game. You won't find a better community to be a part of once you jump on board with this game. Hope this gets some of you out there to give this game a run.

And where else but PC gaming are games running strong 4 years after release? PC gaming will ALWAYS be number one!

I downloaded this when I heard that is was freemium. I enjoyed the Microsoft Flight beta, but I need actual combat to make the actual flying part tense and interesting.

Let me clarify. You only need to turn off UAC during the install. Afterwards you can turn it back on. The problem is with the installer not the game itself. Also, if you don't want to turn it off you can install the necessary files from the disk itself. Just use Windows Explorer and look in the 3rd Party folder. Most users don't realize this so we just tell them to turn it off all together to make it easy. Then install the Direct X 9.0c, Visual C++ 2005 Redist and .Net 3.5 Framework. Installing these will not hurt your system at all. Those are needed to run the game. The problem is UAC blocks the second half of the install routine, doesn't give a warning, nothing, so some players think they are done and when they launch it doesn't work because these necessary M$ libraries have not been installed. Again, has nothing to do with the game itself. Most flight-simmers hate UAC and turn it off anyways.
