As far as vaguely described fantasy/spiritual storyline solely in aid of a high concept game mechanic goes, this game is the Shadow of the Colossus of 2D platformers. It definitely reminded me of Ikagura and as much as I'm trying to feel ambivalent towards it, I can't help but to admit that it looks ok; and there's obviously more to it than what we saw.

When this game says: "Co-op", it means: "Co-op"!

The game looks interesting though not for me. I do like the premise and the artwork seems unique. The gameplay well, not it's fault with me at least.

The thing about Ikaruga is, when you scrutinize it thoughtfully, it's WILDLY overrated.

Outland may have that problem but I'm cautiously optimistic it's going to do the "light/dark" mechanic way more justice.

IDK. The art style is nice, but it seems kind of... bland.

Unless I hear it's really really good, like, say, Super Meat Bout or Braid, I think I'll pass.

I like that he mispronounced dubloons as "double-loons", though.

I like Ikaruga because of the music and how well it integrates into the flow and structure of the game, and of course the art. As far as gameplay I prefer Do Don Pachi and I am better at DDP too. That being said, this looks like the Ikaruga of action platformers haha. While the music doesn't really strike me.

This looks interesting..! I really like the art style, and that whole co-op element (particularly the whole 'fuck with your partner' thing, when you've got light/dark control) seems potentially entertaining.

Yay for multiplayer platformers!
And yay for the demo operator being a totally cool dude! QL:EXs can be a drag sometimes, but he was both laid back and to the point. Great vid guys :]

This looks surprisingly great. Guess I shouldn't be too shocked at how well it's coming together given the developer's pedigree, but I'm glad to see their games maintaining an apparent high level of quality even as they explore other genres and styles

Only because it has become the go-to name drop for great shmups. It is a great shmup, but if you don't really love the genre it's just another game with a neat gimmick.

I was able to demo this while Adam gave me a run down of the game at PAX.. It was great, and Adam is a heck of a nice guy with a lot of excitement for the game. I can't wait to get it.

@Khann: A Producer and a  PR rep for a company are not always the same person. In fact, a lot of video game developers, Ubisoft included, use PR companies for that sort of thing. If you watch the QL, you will notice he is credited as a Producer. Besides that point, a person involved with the game is generally going to act positively towards his/her game, but I played several games there that people presented rather apathetically. The fact that he was willing to spend a good amount of time talking about Outland with my friend and me makes me feel better about buying his product. Thanks for you helpful input, Khann. :)

Oh yea, to get this directly back to the game: It still looks cool!

That flash game, Fireboy and Watergirl or whatever, isn't the sound when you hover over a level on the level select screen the exact same sound of the fairies in Zelda:OoT and MM?

Yeah that would get old real quick. I'd have to imagine they switch people out to drive the demo, otherwise they'd probably burn out real quick.

I remember reading about this in Game Informer. Looks pretty good. I'm diggin' the Patapon art style, but I have no interest in the co-op whatsoever, which seems to be what it's focused on so I'll probably pass unless it gets raving reviews or something.

Also, I'm probably reading way too far into this, but there's something icky about you having to put "goddesses" back into prison on the order of "gods". Hmmm.

I didn't even know Ubi Soft HAD a San Francisco office:) But I know this - in both Montreal and France (and they are, after all, a French publisher) - they pronounce it "ooh-bisoft". This US Producer guy is just confusing everything!

Change the same to Boobysoft.  Eliminate this pronunciation problem once and for all.  Gain brand exposure.  Attract your target demo like, well, teenage boys to breasts.  Profit.

I dig it. i really dig silhouette animation, so anything like this - from Limbo to the load screens and cutscenes in Majin and the Forsaken Kingdom - are something that I'm automatically a fan of. As for a polarity-switching mechanic, this looks pretty solid. I loved Ikaruga, and even love Silhouette Mirage on PSX (a game a TON of people covering this seem to forget), and I gotta say just from watching videos that Outland is WAAAY less confusing than Silhouette Mirage. Still, someone  should put that up on the PSN as a PSX Classic. Even though Working Designs isn't around anymore. It's one of Treasure's coolest games - they don't make platformers very often.

@Ventilaator:  Haha - I played Fireboy & Watergirl. But you gotta remember, you're not dealing with 2 characters at once here in Outlands. This is just co-op mode. You're playing a guy who can switch polarities, which is a mechanic cribbed from Treasure's games, Silhouette Mirage and Ikaruga. Probably some other stuff too. Most nearly every idea has been done already - what matters is if a game does something cool with it. You don't need to be fresh to be entertaining.
