Ugh, that high field of view makes me sick to my stomach. It looks so terrible.

I stopped playing Portal 2 because the field of view was about 1000x too extreme and I didn't want to have to change it.

90° FoV used to be the standard until people started playing FPS games on consoles.

45–60°, which seems to be default on console games, has two causes;

1. Performance is a lot better when you're only drawing a fraction of the items on-screen.

2. People typically sit further from their televisions than they would at a monitor.

A high FoV only looks fisheyed when you're sitting too far away from the screen.

100° is about right on my PC as I have a large screen (46″) and only sit a few feet back.

Literally all the FoV slider does is crop the screen:

If an FOV slider is just cropping the screen I really feel it's not doing what an FOV slider should. It should be adjusting the view angle horizontally only, or at least adjusting the vertical view angle by an amount proportional to the height vs the width.

I don't get why guns and hands are so often rendered so close to the camera. Especially when the FoV is set high.

And opposite to Brad's guess, the higher your FoV the faster your movement seems.

Obviously it can be changed (i assume). I haven't had that problem at all so I never needed to change the brightness or anything.

Being an Englishman I felt it my duty to play this game. It's a fun concept, but it all feels somewhat shallow at this point - perhaps future iterations or content updates will fix this.

Something cool but not apparent in the quick look is that more enemies and more difficult types of enemies will begin appearing, paroling and guarding areas as you bring fragments back to the stone.

Also, robot dogs are jerks.

I expect this may be controversial, but I wouldn't mind games like Fallout or the elder scrolls game to just have click on a house from the outside to see the lootable stuff it contains for houses that have no other purpose than that. For me, rummaging through randomly generated houses for junk gets quite tedious in games like that.

I'm with you on this. Maybe it's just my pack rat nature in those types of games but, even though I doubt there is anything in the place...What if there is? Cue me spending hours flipping through bent bean cans and broken chairs...

I'm really glad they quick looked this. I was rather interested in it, but after watching this I don't think it would be my kind of game at all.

Jesus those robot arms startled the crap out of me. Goddammit, game...!

I bought this a few nights ago, knowing nothing outside of what I'd seen in the Steam trailer. I was swimming through a lake and then HOLY CRAP FUCKING TENTACLES WTF OH SHIT OH SHIT OH SHIT.

My wife, who was watching TV on the couch nearby and had no idea what I was playing, knows that I don't scare easily and found my sudden fit of terror hilarious.

I'm enjoying the game (I've completed a couple of islands so far) but it does feel like there should be more to it, be it some drip-fed secondary "twist" plotline, or even just some more mechanics to further spice things up. But that aside, it's a great concept that's well realised and the game's still got a lot of cool stuff going for it.

I do wish this game had more missions other than "go find these rocks." The tension and world were fantastic, but it got awfully repetitive since you only have one goal, and each time you found a rock, the game would just increase the robot populace.

I'd have to agree with the video in that the game seems sparse in places. I kinda want to check it out myself, but I'll end up waiting for a bit. So many other things to play right now...

I like the idea but it's missing the bit where the hunted becomes the hunter.

I hope you're being sarcastic. Making the player the hunter would make it into just another FPS. There's about a billion of those.

@00: I'm a 20 year PC only gamer but I use default FOV. Anything higher looks fisheyed and warped to me, usually. I think people who demand high FOV are in the minority, honestly. I don't think most people even think about it.

Again; it depends on the distance that you are sitting from your display. A high FoV will only look fisheyed if youʼre too far away for that setting.

Playing games at a low FoV makes me feel nauseated, just like playing games at anything less than 60fps will.

If you are used to years of low FoVs, perhaps it might look a little strange again initially, but that should soon pass—just like 60fps may feel “too fast” for a brief moment when youʼre used to everything being 30fps on a console.

I have a 30" monitor and sit at a normal desk, I don't think distance matters for me. Some people need a high FOV, most do not. It might be related to general nausea or who knows what.

You can certainly adapt, but there is a particular FOV that is most accurate if you think of your monitor as a window into the game space. That angle will depend on how close you are and how big the display is.

Basically, make an angle between your hands so that one points at one edge of the screen and the other points at the other edge of the screen. The angle between your hands should match the FOV in the game. In other terms, it is the amount your eye has to turn to traverse from one edge of the screen to the other.

If you are closer, the angle will be bigger, thus higher FOV. If the screen is bigger, again, higher FOV.

Still, you can totally adapt to FOVs that aren't strictly accurate. I remember people used to play Quake with ridiculous FOV settings so they could catch people sneaking in from the sides. Racing games also frequently fudge FOV depending on how fast you are moving to enhance the sense of speed as the fish-eye effect makes things move more quickly around the edges of the screen.

Well, it depends a bit on how the game handles FOV too. This one has a pretty noticeable fisheye effect, but that isn't always the case. Part of it depends on where the game puts the camera in relation to the character. Most put it straight in the middle of the axis of rotation, instead of slightly in front of it (like your eyes would be in relation to the neck), making looking around look like you're just panning around one of those 90's panorama images where stuff in the extreme edges of the screen and the closest points immediately below and above you look extremely warped, instead of actually turning your head or body, which would parallax shift stuff a bit when you turn. The ones that do it right are sadly few and far between. F.E.A.R., Mirror's Edge and a few Unreal engine games get it right, but very few Quake engine games do for some reason. Wolfenstein 3D put the camera behind the character's axis of rotation which made it even more messed up, letting you look around corners by putting your back to them and all kinds of crazy stuff.

FOV's significantly undrer 90 usually make me feel sick pretty quickly. I simply refuse to play anything that forces me to play with something tiny like 60.

While I am usually willing to give single player games with lower FOV's a chance, if a multiplayer game doesn't let me slide the FOV above 90 I'm usually turned off. Low FOV in a multiplayer game usually comes off as taking empowerment away from the player with no gameplay-related justification.

I bumped the FoV up a bit on Sir; I think I prefer it around 85 - 90. Really enjoy Sir but it is punishingly difficult.

So...this is full release but it doesnt even have collision on the trees? I feel like this game should be a bit more...realized if they are claiming its at full release. This still looks very early access to me.

There is something about this game (the Britishness?) that looks much more appealing to me than a Rust or Day Z. Maybe it's the lack of other people being assholes.
