Didn't they change the name from Soul Edge to Soul Blade because of that Langdell guy with his trolling trademark of 'Edge'?

You can mash to victory in both games, so to be fair picking one of the other means nothing.

Except that you're 100% wrong. Nice try though.

I can't say I know much about either series, but at least elaborate on your opinion instead of just saying "lolno"

@sofacitysweetheart: If you are mainly interested in the character roster of Soul Calibur 1 and 2, then you should get Soul Calibur 4 since it has nearly all of the same characters plus more.

Soul Calibur 5 has removed a lot of characters from the previous games such as Talim, Taki, Setsuka, Sophitia, Cassandra, Zasalamel, Xianghua, Seung Mina... and there may be others I can't recall at the moment. According to leaked footage, Kilik has been changed to a "mimic"-type character. To be fair, some of the newer characters in SC5 retain some of the removed characters moveset like Natsu is similar to Taki, Xiba is similar to original Kilik, etc.

Soul Calibur 5 has a far better online mode than 4 with a lot more features. Plus, since it is a newer game, you are more likely to play someone online with a good connection.

So if you don't mind missing a large part of the original Soul Calibur cast and you want to play online, then Soul Calibur 5 would be the best choice for you. If you still want to play the original Soul Calibur cast, then you should get Soul Calibur 4 since it is very cheap now.

It was a troll response to a troll post. It's no secret any more that the big fighting games are deeper than people gave them credit for in the past. That is simply a ignorant opinion over a person who probably either picked or lost to Eddie/Christie in Tekken and formed a silly opinion on a few matches.

Since you asked for elaboration though, the short answer is that there are defensive options in place that will get you killed for mashing. In this one, Namco added some strange things that will probably make or break the game in the competitive scene. Here's 2 examples:

All of these games just have this air of unintentionally awful around them. It feels like they are so sincere with their music, voice acting, and story, but it's all terrible. And it's always put me off. It's like they're trying so hard but it's not coming together. I don't know, just the weird voice acting and that announcer guy and the background music. It's always put me off. I don't like these games is what I'm getting at.

Unfortunately that audience is the one they're courting because the ones playing are already buying, and the non-players outnumber players something like 10 million to 1.

Yeah, I'm not sure Taki has the same appeal for that audience. Or rather a blonde girl in a skintight spandex suit fills that same role.

And we've always got Ivy

Looks cool, I guess. Probably get it at some point, but I'm not a fan of them adding in super moves. Back in my day, if you wanted to make a come back in a Soul Calibur game, you had to use skill, not just some move that relies on a special meter!

But that's just me.

No Sophtia? :( I guess her daughter is in there but she was my favourite character. If Ivy can still kick ass why can't Sophitia?

Ivy doesn't age, she was killed by her father Cervantes (who also doesn't age) and came back to get revenge or something. Curse/magic mumbo jumbo going on. So Sophitia is middle-aged at this point and has obviously retired from fighting, along with most of the other characters who aren't technically zombies.

Basically, you know when Tekken jumped from 2 to 3 and had a big time gap and half of the characters were replaced with their children/students? That's what happened here.

No, I quite like the latest Mortal Kombat and Marvel vs. Capcom 3. I just liked that Soul Calibur didn't do that because so many other fighting games do.

This is the second time they've run into a pro while quick looking a fighting game (They watched a match between Daigo and Tokido during SSF4, right after saying pros don't play online.) Pretty sure fLoE is professional SF4/MvC3 player Floejisan.

hey its pretty clear they don't know anything about this game! well i guess the game isnt by capcom and its not called mortal kombat... expected. got it early and i love it. way better than 4 and 3. 2 was my favorite (and is most people favorite) and i think that if my nostalgia wasnt so strong i would think this game is actually better.

but hey the new characters do in fact kind of suck because they're just annoying kids.

they totally joined Floe and Justin Wongs online room. that's kinda cool i guess.

SC2 was the first and only fighting game I ever took the time to get reasonably good at. I dislike fighting games, but I enjoyed some of the complexity of the modes and fighting styles in SC2 in particular.

I got SC4 and was.. fairly disappointed by some of the slapdash modes they threw in there. Never bothered to play much of it. Visually, SC5 looks almost identical. Unless it has some awesome modes like SC2 did, I don't think there's enough here to make me go back to it. Supermoves just seem like such a lazy addition, but that's the same with all modern fighters. I will say that the story stuff seems like a mild step forward, actual "cutscenes" in drawing form rather than just a text dump at the start. They could still do better though.

I realized that the only reason I enjoyed the first two games was the cool single player modes. Whatever the ones were where you went around a map doing missions. Those were lengthy and fun. It wasn't the actual combat that interested me.

I guess I must have fallen off the Soul Calibur wagon because this series isn't doing anything for me anymore. I adored the first and greatly enjoyed the second, somewhat enjoyed the third and barely played the fourth. Number five doesn't look too impressive. To me it just looks like they added supers, beefed up the customization somewhat and reskinned some older characters. I've bought every previous SC game, I won't be buying this one.

Should I buy this or Soulcalibur 4? D: I recently played 2 after busting out my old Gamecube and had a surprising amount of fun learning some combos.

No Link in either version tho? Boo.

I'm going to say that neither 4 nor 5 are nearly as fun as 2. I still enjoy playing 2 now and again and that was my go-to dudebro game with my friends (apart from Smash Bros.) but I totally can't stand 4. Something about it's way off in appearance, feel, etc.

Also, how on earth would Link be in either version? Unless it was on the Wii, which it's not. Just saying that's a weird statement. Also, he was always pretty terrible anyway.
