It's always weird to me, the argument that Goldeneye was good "if you didn't have a PC".

To me, it's a weird comparison, because something like Goldeneye and something like Quake were trying to be very different things. I played both at the time, and while I can understand why people liked Quake, it never appealed to me at all. I just never enjoyed those sorts of hyper fast, twitchy style shooters.

Those conversations also often seem to act like Goldeneye was just its multiplayer. While the multiplayer was undeniably a bit part of why its fans liked it (and again, it was a very different style than Quake multiplayer, so it's not surprising that people may prefer one or the others). the campaign was also a big draw. I liked the multiplayer quite a bit, but I feel like people who are dismissive of it often ignore or overlook the appeal of the campaign. For its time, it was great.

It's absolutely fine if some people don't like Goldeneye, but I feel like many who don't often misinterpret why some people do like it.

Oh man, I have yet to play this game but it's certainly on my to-play list. It looks amazing.

Worth checking out this GB topic for some hilarious forum screenshots.

@mrbubbles: same thing happened to me but mine was just a rage quit. Didn't pick it up until last year when I played the Gamecube version (I had played the Wii version previously) and beat the whole thing in 2 days. Great game.

Man I never realized how badly I wanted to listen to a bombcast-esque discussion while watching someone play through a zelda game until now. This should be the next Metal Gear Scanlon like series on Giant Bomb.

It's good enough for a replay, but it's no Link Between Worlds or Wind Waker. But whatever--I can pretty much always have a Zelda game in my life and be happy.

I wonder why Jeff gives a much more reasonable opinion as to why TP is not great when compared to other games like Yoshi's Island. The obvious answer is that he just doesn't hate this game as much as something like Yoshi, but I obviously have no proof of that. When his criticisms of older games tend to be overblown "THIS GAME IS SHIT" kind of stuff, hearing him talk about Zelda in this level way sounds odd.

Well Yoshi's Island boils down to two points for him. 1.) He doesn't like Yoshi and baby Mario as characters and 2.) He hates the egg throwing mechanic which is about 50% of the game. If you don't like that CORE gameplay mechanic then you don't like Yoshi's Island. Simple as that. lol

He's said that before. But sometimes fans of the game can't accept that Jeff hates it so much and they keep bringing it up and now he's like you "you know what...FUCK YOU MOTHER FUCKERS, THAT GAME IS FUCKING SHIT" just to piss them off. Which is usually hilarious lol.

No interest in this game, good discussions though. I hope they make more games like A link to the past, and link between worlds, 2d>3d. That spinner is awesome.

Really bums me out to hear people discount Skyward Sword. Some of the best dungeons and combat in the series! Too bad it had a crummy intro and content padding, but god damn if that game didn't completely blow me back at the time.

Such a gorgeous art style as well.

@aldrenar47: I have not played through Skyward Sword. With that in mind, Wind Waker is my favorite 3d Zelda game.

I thought the purpose of the Ooccoo was to let you save in the middle of the dungeon where otherwise it would dump you at the beginning.

I love this game - just thinking about the Postman or Agitha makes me smile. Not sure I want to pay $60 for another version though.

Dan is many things, but he's a damn fine videosgamesmen, talked and walked this quick look like pro. Its one thing I've noticed about him, he plays game well, and is not frustrating to watch him play things.

EDIT: Perhaps his stealthing is the exception!

Cool, the second best 3D Zelda.

Wind Waker is the best, of course, minus the last third they fixed in the HD version. I'm not even trolling.

And as far as "gimmicky" Zeldas go, I think Phantom Hourglass did the touch controls really well. Or that one part that had me stumped for a while where you have to blow into the mic to uncover a dusty tablet. Of course the central dungeon in that game got annoying after a while.

I absolutely loved the gamecube controller, it might be my favorite controller ever. It was maybe the most comfortable controller ever, it just fit my hands perfectly. I get the complaints about the nonstandard button layout and the mismatched sticks, but that thing was perfectly shaped, and I loved the big oversized curved triggers. I like how the XBONE controller brought that back, which is a giant improvement over the 360 controller. I kind of hate the 360 controller because the hard sharp housing around the triggers just digs into my knuckles. The PS controllers have the wrong analog stick placement.

Yet another time where people automatically assume that everyone who hated Wind Waker was some idiot who can't stand to see anything cartoony. I love cartoon style games, Sly Cooper, WoW, Mario, etc. etc. etc... love all of it. I *hate* the art style of Wind Waker. Not because i'm some weeaboo basement dweller who can only project myself into macho awesome coolguys. Because Wind Waker is ugly... it is so damn ugly. I hated the look every single second i played of that incredibly mediocre game. Can we please, please, as a people try to please stop trying to show how hip we are by proclaiming our love for a game that was, i admit a bold, but ultimately ugly and boring move by Nintendo. It's been more than 10 years guys, we get it, you're cool, you're one of the people who "get it", now please stop talking about Wind Waker.

Coming late to the party, but after playing OOT 3D, Wind Waker and now Twilight Princess....I think the latter 2 are actually better games then OoT. Ocarina of Time is ofcourse a lot more important for games, for Zelda and subsequently Nintendo. But OoT hasnt aged very well, even in remake form. Especially the dungeons left me lukewarm.

Of the three I think I prefer playing TP the most. Yes the opening drags and the wolfparts are meh, but Im playing those parts like an mmo, with something on tv in the background. The dungeons however make up for it in scale and innovation. Im having a blast playing on Hero mode. It doesnt stand out very much in the looks (especially the overworld. The design of the dungeons are fine). I cant remember how the game continues after you get the first 3 lightspirits/dungeons done and if the lightvessel stuff is over. If so, that would be a major improvement.

Windwakers dungeons werent very good in comparison, and there werent enough of them, however the overworld stuff (and art design) is much better. I love the looks of it. . But I come to Zelda for the dungeons, items/weapon progression and bossfights. And in that area I really like TP.

So, my thoughts on the 3D Zeldas (i.e. the generally inferior Zeldas):

  1. Majora's Mask
  2. Wind Waker
  3. Twilight Princess
  4. Ocarina of Time
  5. Skyward Sword

Tending to prize the overworld and characters more perhaps than the typical fan, but I do think that TP has consistently terrific dungeon design.

Twilight Princess on the Wii was the first 3D Legend of Zelda I played back when I got it at launch but before that it was Minish Cap that was my very first. Those two helped paved the way for me loving this series. Also I find it humorous that Gamespot scores for this are 8.8 (Wii), 8.9 (GCN) and 9.0 (WiiU).

Came back to this after reading through the AMA Jeff, Vinny, and Dan did. Jeff and Dan really do have a great discussion about the series and the games industry in general in this. I remember enjoying their talk when this came out, but it's even more interesting having completed a lot of Zelda games since then.

I want to see [Nintendo] do their own thing. It's not like, oh, if only they made "Skyrim" but "The Legend of Zelda"! No, I don't want that game either.

- Jeff, 2016 (@51:30)

Great QL cuz the two talk endlessly about Zelda and Nintendo's legacy as it existed prior to the reveal of Breath of the Wild and the Switch.
