Jeff is completely right about Twilight Princess. It probably seems great if it's your first Zelda game, but it's terribly predictable and rote if you've played the others. I bought it the day it came out and have never been able to finish it. The wolf parts aren't great, and the game is way too easy. I guess this version has a hard mode, but apparently flips the game world to the (worse) Wii version for no good reason. The worst part is knowing that they canceled Wind Waker 2 to make this game instead. Wind Waker is AMAZING and they canceled it because of the idiots complaining about the (gorgeous) art style. If you haven't played it yet, you should absolutely go buy the HD remake instead of this.

I remember enjoying "Twilight Princess" for the most part, but damn did it suffer from the ugliest character models for the villagers (especially the kids).

'Why you gave Zelda 8.8'- random kid to Ryan McDonald during GameSpot's coverage of the Wii launch party in Time Square. Fun times to be watching live GameSpot back then.

The only Zelda games I've enjoyed after A Link to the Past are Majora's Mask, The Wind Waker, and Minish Cap. Everything else just felt like it was trying to be super different or super similar.

An objective, unbiased reviewer would have clearly seen that the game deserved an 8.81.

I think this is the FIRST game I can remember where people LOST THEIR MINDS over a review being "too low," which basically became code for "not perfect." MGS4's the other prominent one I remember where a site gave it a 9.4 and people went INSANE...I think Penny Arcade even made a comic about the overreaction.

Nothing quite like attaching your ego to a thing you're not creating to get the blood up, even all tehse years later!

This was the second game I ever played on the Wii after WiiSports (of course) and I think it soured me on the Wii's controls forever. Whether or not they were actually *bad* controls or not, I just had such a time forcing myself to keep playing simply because I'd rather have been using a traditional controller.

That said, Wind Waker is the only Zelda game I've ever truly enjoyed so maybe 'traditional Zelda' has never been my thing to begin with.

@patrician: Those people are speaking nonsense; the GC controller is very, very bad. It's only good compared to its predecessor, the N64 controller, which was a travesty on all levels.

I played this on the Gamecube and thought it was alright. It's not the best, but it's also not as bad as Skyward Sword.

I never beat it, though. My brother accidentally deleted my save file that was 50 hours in and I've never had the heart to return.

I remember so many people getting super angry at Jeff for the 8.8. I wasn't one of them, but I like the game (more than Skyward Sword, which I would have rather seen as an HD release honestly). I didn't have a Wii at the time of this games release, and my brother couldn't wait, so we got the GameCube version; other than the mirror image, I don't think there's much of a difference, or reason to be disappointed in getting one version over another. I thought the GameCube controller was fine, but yeah, the no L3 or R3 clicking in wasn't great. The only benefit that I can think of is that Freedom Fighters (which Jeff gave a 9.2 on GameCube, and a 9.3 on everything else) had L as aiming, while on PS2 and Xbox, it was R3, which is bad since it wasn't toggle (wouldn't be ideal anyways)... I want that game on PC.

I remember playing this game when it came out for like 4 hours straight one day, forgot save, and then a power surge happened. I lost all that progress which was the last time I ever played twilight princess

Dan is spot on about the dungeons, they're by far the best in 3D Zelda.

The Discussion between Jeff & Dan was a great debate.

Say what you will about the bad parts, this game had top-tier bosses.

I didn't own an N64 growing up, so Twilight Princess was my first 3D Zelda game, and after playing the Oracles games, suddenly having this huge world to play in blew my mind. I suspect I'm in a scenario where I look back on TP just like other fans look back on Ocarina of Time. I think there's something to be said for this being a decent first 3D Zelda to play for new/younger fans because it retreads OoT in so many ways, without having to deal with OoT's datedness (although the 3DS version is much improved). The wolf sections are a drag, though.

Yes, this. The only reason one would love that controller is if your only context is the N64 one.

The true best controller is of course the Snes one, sure it won't work with a 3d game, but damn that thing was great, haven't had a dpad that felt great since.
