Quick Look: The Order: 1886

Yeah, give me a nice looking third-person shooter, a little steampunk, light Arthurian legend, heavy QTEs... Super widescreen it. To go.

Sit back and enjoy as the Giant Bomb team takes an unedited look at the latest video games.

41 minutes? I guess they didn't want to play through half the game in one sitting so it's a shorter Quick Look.

Let me guess, 2/5 stars?

I understand the complaints regarding the aspect ratio of this game (as well as in 'The Evil Within'), but I would be lying if I said I didn't love the 2.35:1 ratio for movies.

Even though both this and the new Kirby got 2/5, I'll still get the latter tomorrow since it's gotten good/great reviews in multiple other places. 'The Order' is getting slagged almost universally; the only good review I've seen is from Game Informer.

EDIT: "Everything has stopping power when you shoot it in the head." – Jeff Gerstmann, early contender for Quote of the Year.

I'll be content to watch a playthrough on Youtube or Twitch or something, as the gameplay doesn't look all that interesting, but boy it sure is a pretty video game to look at.

I'm quite happy than Dan likes The Prestige. That movie is great, and it's the thing that got me to realize that Tesla was pretty rad.

I'm going to be honest here. I've currently only watched 10 minutes of the quicklook but I'm not sure if I want to finish the whole thing. The order seems like a pretty slow paced steampunk Gears of War. Not very exciting to watch and I'm thinking probably not that exciting to play either. Except for the story it comes accross very 'been there done that' like.

Best thing about watching letterboxed video games is, depending on the video player, if you fit the video to the browser the video becomes windowboxed making the video game look like a poorly mastered movie from the 90s.

It struck me immediately it's too quiet during the fights, no music to turn up the exitement or mood, just background noises. The prestige is one of my favorite Nolan movies.

Even with the poor reviews, I'm still enjoying it. Best Buy shipped my copy to me on Monday. It definitely isn't what I had hoped for-doesn't seem like many current gen games are-but I will complete it and probably trade it in.

Shame was one of the titles I was really excited for on ps4.

I haven't played this so I can't speak to how the letterboxing actually affects gameplay - but I take issue with Jeff's complaints about it (specifically, trying to emulate movies). I've always been a fan of how the letterbox format gives a very particular framing to scenes and shots. It's a little more... artistic, I guess? 16:9 splits the difference between style and function (especially compared to 4:3 televisions which were very much neither of those two things), but I absolutely believe there is a place in video games for letterboxing, regardless of whatever technical reasons it may or may not have been chosen.

Having said that... this looks disappointing. I don't really care for a fantastic-looking but otherwise simply competent game. I'd much rather spend those 5 hours with Grow Home, which is also gorgeous (in a very different way), but has a lot of heart, and engaging gameplay.

Hope Sony finally turns their first party negative streak around.

Both Driveclub and The Order seem to be following the same great looking, yet shallow experience path.

I would HOPE that as good looking as Uncharted 4 is that Naughty Dog will be more open as to letting consumers now how much there is to their game. As all these recent examples show that spending so much time making sure the game looks good for next gen seems to cause drawbacks on the actual gameplay content itself.

Sadly, this game is exactly what I thought it would be. A poorly executed PlayStation exclusive...great. I really would like a reason to start playing my PlayStation 4. Looks, like I'm going to have to wait for uncharted unless that turns out to be a master chief debacle. Man, MCC still bums me out. However, there is hope. This game proves how damn beautiful the next-generation of games can be. All we need is a developer to put amazing gameplay to these type of visuals and it's going to be on.

I'm not sure. Letterboxing in movies makes sense because it's planned to be framed in a specific way, so you can shoot it accordingly. With games I'm not sure if it will ever make sense, because I think it will always feel limiting to not be able to "see" the whole picture.

"Ends at act II" feels like a lot of video game endings lately. Shame developers are more interested in lazily setting up sequels than telling a good story nowadays.

Damn the game looks kind of bland to me (not because it's just a shooter or just linear... I just think it's missing some flavor in the gameplay) but wow is it pretty. When he was picking up and looking at that piece of paper.

With the aspect ratio and large protagonist model on screen you get about 1/4 of the screen to look at.

Dan mentions the God of War games as 5-6 hours experiences, but in my potentially flawed recollection, I thought those were more like 10-15 hour games - I specifically remember thinking God of War 2 would've benefited from being a couple of hours shorter.

The letterboxing is super distracting. I don't like. I wish big budget games would stop doing that.

That knife putting away animation is hilarious.

Huh, so this game is pretty but seems fairly bland.

Also why did the Werewolf (which looks pretty stupid in my opinion) flee after getting blasted in the face by air, when it easily could have continued forward and killed the character... Oh that's why.

I agree. Also, I'm not sure it's correct to say that they're now showing less on the screen. It appears that they're using a wider FOV in consideration of the letterbox aspect ratio. So, unless I'm mistaken, they're actually showing more on the screen than they would have if they had used a standard 16:9 aspect ratio.

Not to make a game length joke against The Order but I feel the same way. The God of War games always felt much longer to me. I think it's honestly because you play most of the GoW games instead of watching.

The game seems alright. I'd probably get it if I had a PS4. There are cool ideas here, and it seems pretty well-done for the most part. I get the feeling a sequel could be a very good game if it better capitalizes on the setting, but it may not ever get made due to the tepid critical reception for this. It's disappointing to see it come up a bit short, but I applaud them for at least trying something a little different.

Also, The Prestige is a fantastic movie.

If howlongtobeat.com is to be trusted (which I do), GoW 1 was 9 hours, 2 was nearly 12 hours, and 3 was 10 hours. And most of that was gameplay, so definitely not "5-6 hour games" at all.

Holy shit, did this ever destroy any interest I had in the game. I'd been hearing about the game being lousy with QTEs, but now that I see how many there are and that they're insta-fail - nope. I despise that sort of design. It's not fun.
